My family still has connections to our farm in the "Land of Warriors" Hadland Norway. Which is just north of Oslo. (My mother's cousin went there during WWII on a mission for the OSS, and met & married another cousin, and stayed. So we still go back to the family farm.) I can see where the strength comes from they had a harsh, sharsh existence during the cold ice age. So, after the lands warmed the population boomed. These subsistence farmers just survived during most of the year, they lived in a dark winter -- living off stored food, stored fats, and fasting. They had a couple months in the summer to make everything. It makes a person tough.

Hey, loved it. I really like that that you decided to include the Baltic areas aswell and mention Saaremaa's burials. It really gets buried and people don't really think of Estonians as vikings. New findings actually have given us more viking age treausres from Läänemaa (western coast of Estonia just to the east of Saaremaa) than from Saaremaa. The cultural mix is so insane for that time, even more than nowadays. Archeologists also point out that they cannot differenciate between Scandinavian findings and stuff from Saaremaa.

@Quaker274 I'm related to two viking warriors, and also a scottish warrior who was half scottish and viking. It runs all through my dads side of the family. My grandfather was 6 2 with a size 14 shoe, blue eyes with blondish brow hair and a huge beard. His family was from norway and Iceland. And on my moms side we are part of royalty and descendants of rollo, from france, then less than 20% middle eastern egypt area. I'm 80 to 85% norse/scandanavian. And definately part of warrior vikings.

I like when he explains that the norsemen first of all were settlers, traders and explorers. For I guess many see them first of all as raiders/badass people.

    • @melindabraun6060

Most were NOT raiders. The Norse were farmers first and foremost. Raiding occurred as a means of survival and not aimless violence

@world leader Ok lets break this down. Viking is an occupation, NOT the term for all the Nordic region. There were Vikings all over the world, because if you traveled to trade, pillaging, etc, then you're a Viking.
Keep in mind that OP used the term Norsemen and not Vikings. You assumed I was talking about Vikings, which I wasn't at all, but I don't blame the assumption.
The Norsemen weren't all Vikings, because most of the population were farmers and traders that stayed within their homeland and cared for their people. Majority of the population during the Viking Age WEREN'T VIKINGS. They were farmers and traders.
Now were the Vikings we understand from TV Shows and some historical texts like Adam of Bremen and Tacitus' Germania seen as killers - absolutely. But were all people during the Viking Age killers and rapists - absolutely not. The Vikings aren't to be glorified, because obviously there were many atrocities they committed. But to broad stroke the Nordic/Germanic peoples during the Viking Age as rapists, and to say that I was glorifying them, is extraordinarily off base.

@@erikeriksson3615 Thanks, although I have to admit that talking about "Polish culture" (or anything) back in the bronze age is a bit of anachronism. But yeah, the people living around the Baltic certainly had contacts with one another for a long time.
I was expecting Jomsborg to be mentioned but unlike nearly any other element of this video, I didn't expect that much about the first two rulers of Poland and their Nordic connections.

Why I was mentioned bronze age is that bin the Swedish province of Ostrogothe lots of women's are in graves probably married to local gothic mens. They women's are Slavic because they have with them special pottery and things that is only from polish areas. They Swedish Gothic tribe and Polen have in the iron age before christ also big connection and also migration we can se in graves the Wielbark culture and in Ostrogothi and westgothi in Sweden we see in graves from warriors connection with Polend.
