  • Peter Vikesland is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech. His research involves the application of fundamental chemical principles to the study of natural and engineered systems. A present focus is on the use of nanotechnology for the detection and remediation of environmental contaminants. Parallel ongoing studies also seek to examine the potentially damaging impacts of nanotechnology on environmental systems. Vikesland has received research support from the US National Science Foundation, the Water Research Foundation, the William and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. He is a NSF CAREER Awardee and he and his students have received numerous awards acknowledging their efforts in the field of environmental engineering and science.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Say No 2 Nanotechnology... We're In The Information Age... You Just Gotta Ask The Right Questions

This idea that fresh water is scarce and running out is wrong and it's always been wrong. If you go into the desert and try to live where there is no water then that is your own stupidity. All major cities of the world were built next to rivers.
Also, this idea that in the US we should continue to not use the fresh river water and just let 90% of it flow into the ocean is also wrong.
We could use rainwater? How come rainwater is acceptable to use but not river water? This makes no sense.
We should use wastewater for drinking? I think that's exactly what you city people should do.
Nanotechnology can help purify water? Fantastic! You do realize that we already have water purification systems that already work, right?
The use of water does not harm the water nor does it destroy the water unless you are on a submarine. There are only a few locations in the entire world where people should conserve water.
    This is activism without intelligence.
