Hi Modern Nurse!! I heard zero lies in this video. Also, please allow me to say that the last 2-3 minutes of the video were GOLDEN. Absolutely heartfelt and genuine information. I’m a future RN and definitely not at all competitive but I’m learning to be. If I want to get into a program I need to research and come prepared because these programs not playing. Some of these programs IMO are extremely out of pocket. As quite as it’s kept: The state where I live- most colleges and almost every university are only allowing ONE repeat prerequisite class. Some university are only accepting ONE repeat class in science or math. I don’t thank many people realize how competitive it is to become a nurse. What other fields are like this besides Military?

Helpful but obvious information. Schools have changed their policies. First, they are starting to do away with the 5 year science pre-requisite policy and now accepting students whose science courses are a little older. The essay and letters of references are being done away with. They are becoming easier with chemistry and just accepting intro to chemistry instead of Organic chemistry. Be careful about going to out of state colleges unless you spend a year their first and establish residency (temporarily) or else you will spend a lot of money. I know you need to get in where you fit in, but spending extra money you don't have to get in a nursing school may be a stretch. Also, I would look into the NCLEX chart for the state you are looking to study in and check their NCLEX scores. They have them for each accredited school. I would not attempt to go to a school with low NCLEX scores especially if the school is far and expensive. You can't practice until you pass the NCLEX, and you want a good education. Here is an example of how that chart looks: www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/board_meetings_pdfs/2022/Apr/3-2-6.pdf All you have to do is Google (The State you want) with NCLEX scores. It also shows you how many students they take a year. So If you see a school taking only 50 students a year, you may have a hard time getting in, but if you see a school that's taking in 175 students a year, you have a better chance. If you really want to be a nurse keep trying, but if you get rejected work on something else until you can get accepted. Try going for a Medical Assistant, CNA, PCT, EMT etc while you wait. These are all good fields that will help you in your nursing career.

Tania, you can become. Nurse if that is your dream. I would encourage you to go for it and do not spend the time and money chasing after other programs and work your way up. You are never too old. I have had nursing students who are grandparents when they applied to school. You can do it!
I’m sorry you didn’t get into the program. Some. Rising programs will let you know the reason(s) why. So you could contact them and ask. If it I s a GPA problem, you can re-take classes. If it is the predictor test, study up for it and take it again.

Nursing programs have tried to set a standard and therefore they are like gatekeepers. My mother went to nursing school in tue 1960’s when hospitals were gatekeepers since they took on the academic and training role for the nursing profession.

I asked the program I'm applying to how many of their accepted applicants have outstanding prerequisites that need to be done by the time the program starts (they allow up to 16 credits to be outstanding for this traditional bsn program) and she said maybe half. I will have 1 class outstanding. Should I bother applying?

Jeremy, there may be some schools that have a quota to fill. For most nursing programs that go strictly from the application criteria, that wouldn't matter. A key is to be the best applicant possible.
Yes, it did make a different. As a male, you have a very different life perspective. That would effect your application. Your experience came through. Having male nurses are important!
You are going to have a difficult time in life if you are afraid of rejection. You have to get comfortable with rejection. There is always going to be someone out there better than yourself at any given thing. Nursing is not the be all end all. If you don't get accepted, keep trying or look into something else. The real tragedy is when you keep trying to get into nursing with high gpa's and finally get accepted only to see that it's not for you, and you hate the work. Sometimes you don't get accepted because it's trying to tell you that it's not meant for you and not waste your money and time.

No it doesn’t make a big difference in job prospects especially because of the nursing shortage. Hospitals are desperate for nurses. In some very competitive states like California it may be a little harder to get hired with just your RN but not impossible. There are some hospitals that only hire nurses with their bachelors, depends where you live. Usually when you get hired with just your RN they give you a time period to get your BSN, usually one or two years after being hired. So it still takes 4 years it’s just a different route. One year for your prerequisites, two for the ADN program, and one for your bachelors. Benefit to going to an ADN program (RN) is that you can work sooner and ADN programs are much cheaper. Downside is they are way more competitive. If you go the ADN route you can do a RN to BSN online bridge program that allows you to take one class at a time so it’s totally doable while you are working as a new nurse.
That is a common question. The biggest benefit to a BSN year s you have more options. Some hospitals only want to hire a bachelor’s degree nurse. And some jobs,like leadership positions, require the bachelor’s degree.
An associates are clinical heavy whereas the BSN is more theory (book reading). A BSN is always better. The ADN is just a technical vocational hands on approach designed to get nurses out in the field quickly due to shortages. Sometimes the higher degree opens more doors. If and ADN and BSN work together in a hospital setting, unless the ADN is a super employee, all of the critical assignments will be asked of the BSN first, because he/she is more educated. Typically, your ADN's are going to be low income people trying to better their lives at the community college, and your BSN's are upper level smart students with money and driven not going the cheaper route. I took classes at both the community college and the university, and I can tell you right off the bat there is no comparison. The university is light years ahead of the community college. You learn way more at the university level then you do at a run of the mill community college. As a matter of fact, you learn squat diddly at the community college. I wouldn't be surprised if nurses graduating from a community college were barely competent. Oh, I forgot to add, had to come back on here, some community colleges are so bad with low NCLEX scores that they lose accreditation for their nursing programs. Make sure you check that. Many universities do not lose accreditation, but you can find community colleges easily that have lost nursing accreditation or on notice to lose it.
