FYI I don’t think u can do 7.1 uncompressed on these new ones cause the base station doesn’t even have an opt port anymore, on the old gen 4 u could bet u needed a repeater in order for it to work

But I have the series X and ps5. Can I play on my ps5 and my son on the series x at the same time. I play on the ps5 without the tv I play psvr2. But the hdmi cables all go trough the base station of the a50x. Please help me before i buy the wrong device.
Quick question from a newbie. Does that pass through basically eliminate the need to use an elgato to record a console gameplay to a pc with obs? Just curious.
I hope they sorted out the technical issues that A50 Gen 2 owners experience. Headphones disconnects from base station "requires hard reset", Headphones and Base Station does not communicate with each other when updating to new firmware - Rercent update Base Station updated and Headphones could not be updated because the updated base station does not read the old firmware of the headphones. How I resolved this is there are two Astro command center software version to obtain -One in Microsoft App store and other direct download in Astro Website so how I resolved this was I found out that the Microsoft App updates the headset automatically but not the base station and the Astro website version updates the base station. So if you ever experience this update the headphones firsts from the astro command center Microsoft app store and then base station from astro website Astro Command Center. (Hope I save you half a day work figuring this out LOL Astro) - I still love my Astro!
Can you listen to multiple sources at the same time like PC USB and the Xbox HDMI at the same time kinda like how on the A40 dac you can hear the optical, USB, and 3.5mm inputs at the same time?
@@GTAundsuchtiii2407 yeah, the best part of the Mixamp and the standard A50 was the multiple input sources. I can have discord on my PC, playing on a console, then have another device with a podcast going all at the same time. I've had A40s for 12 years now. I've got a workflow I've grown into and no other product has a setup like this. I've legitimately passed on better headsets because of them not being compatible with the Mixamp.
The HDMI instead of optical is because most connect the optical into their PS4. And the PS5 doesn't have it. It uses HDMI for the sound in and USB for the mic. For example, the A50s with the optical won't work on PS5 without the additional box from Astro that acts like a passthrough so they just combined it here and took out the optical. It's more for the current gen consoles than PS4 for example.
@@TheTechneSony does not allow any 3rd party access to their game/chat api controls so the only way for a 3rd party headset to be able to support hardware game/chat is to manually mix the two streams via optical and usb or HDMI and usb.

Nice! Looking forward to it. I sold my gx to go wireless again and it’s between the two. I have the a50 already. I like them but sound quality leaves a lot to be desired.
If I am just a PC gamer, shall I go with the Astro A50X or with the Logitech G Pro X2 Lightspeed regarding sound and mic quality? Or go with a totally different company in general?
Compared to how many features the A30s have, I am not sure these new A50s are worth that price. The only downside to the A30s is they don't come with the felt pads like the A20's, A40's, and old A10s and A50s.
@Captain-Chats well the new A10s don't have it any more either and you can buy mod kits to change the A40s and A50s to a faux leather. I think the A30s are also designed to not look as "gamey" so the leather looks helps make them look like normal headphones
i'm undecided if you take steelseries artic nova pro wireless .....or this...which are better?...As aesthetic i prefer steel series ....i use on pc and ps5.....but i want to use also with tv. On pc i play also competitive games like cs2 and valorant
Hey, Techne. Can you confirm something for me? I have the A40 and my friend has the A50. I always had the impression that his earcups were smaller than mine and didn't feel that cozy for me, but we never had them both at the same time so I could be "sure". Are the A50 earcups smaller?
i have the old version of these and the one thing thats never talked about is that you can do 2 audio inputs from a PC at the same time (usb and optical). I LOVEEE this bc I can set discord chat flat and game sounds for surround sound. Its amazing and I would love to know what other headsets do this as well, bc now that im use to it, I wouldnt wanna go back to a headset without it.
Do you have to use the hdmi pass through?? The reason why I ask,and no one is mentioning this with this headset, is that pass through is going to introduce latency of some sort as you’re putting something in between your tv to console. Not to mention the CEC handshaking issues this could potentially create if you have a soundbar or AVR.
I’ve had a50s and I currently have maxwells I always tend to go back to the a50s cuz the weight on the maxwells u definitely feel I like the heavy bass on the a50s more to Audeze are great but the comfort on a50s are unmatched imo
so which headset allows you to do this already? i havent seen a headset that allows you to listen to audio from a pc and console at the same time properly since they got rid of the optical port @@GTAundsuchtiii2407
I decided to get the a50 gen 5, I only game on pc & wouldn’t see the need to have the hdmi feature if it ain’t gonna be used lol, I did have the a50 gen 4 and tbh I didnt really like them as much, but I’ve heard those new drivers are pretty good
My complaint in something they didnt address is the screw issue on A40 and A50 models. The big screw in the middle above the ear cup comes loose on its own and it is a pain to get tightened back up.
@@HokieNation84 They are heavy but I wear them ALL day and they do not bother me. I DO have the wicked cushions with the cooling gel, so comfort is great, but I don't even notice the weight once I got used to it.
I've owned almost a dozen different Astro A50 headsets across all my consoles/work/home during the past 10 years because I've constantly needed to send them in for warranty service. Here's to hoping that the new Astro A50X are more reliable.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. Looks to be the same ole cheap plastic, high-priced headphones they've always had, but because they're a known "gamer" brand, they get away with it. This time they're just putting lipstick on a pig with the graphene drivers and an "updated" bay station that looks like something that shoulda came with the PS3 LOL
@@ActionHankI mean the white version is the best looking I have ever seen. And the features (not talking about the shitty hdmi connection that might bottleneck 240hz 4K gaming) is perfect
Idk how. I’m still rocking Gen 2 A50’s from like 2013. They still work. The battery life is butt now but they’re still better than 90% of headsets I’ve tried on. Don’t buy anything but the A50’s. The price is worth it.
Absolutely brilliant headset, only thing I’ve had issue with is sometimes the mic doesn’t come on when I fold the arm down - very intermittent issue doesn’t happen a lot, switch the headset off & back on, it work problem solved, thanks for the review! It was the one that helped me decide to purchase the headset.
Im thinking of upgrading from the g935 to the a50x, but the only benefit I got from this is the simplicity of cycling through different platforms with ease. The chunk of the cost is the bay station, so am I actually gonna get something better than what I already have or is the product mid with an overpriced charging dock.
I can't stand fully closed headsets. I like the natural soundstage of open headsets. Actually, the A50s are more closed than the A40s. Seems it will be the same case for the A50x. Great review as always!
why would you need a console and pc audio at the same time though? honestly just curious the reasoning behind this. I used to have simultaneous Bluetooth from my phone and pc for music on my phone and gaming on pc. But what would you need PC and a console simultaneous bluetooth for ?
Because I have a few games I only play on Xbox but I still want to hear TH-cam or music or anything else really on the PC but I still want to hear the game on the Xbox. I mean if I can use Bluetooth to connect to the PC then I would probably be fine but still would like wireless audio for both@@kingjay9074
No way lol. Maxwell has the best studio quality sound. The A50 will sound good no doubt, but not Maxwell quality, but I can guarantee the A50 will have miles better imaging than the Maxwell
Please please answer this question. Does the voice chat/game balance work directly on the headset on PS5 as it normally only works with first party headsets I.e pulse 3D. Thank you.
With the a50x’s can you still be on ps5 mode and listen to music on pc at the same time? Want to be able to listen to both ps5 and pc at the same time, you can on the normal a50’s but just want to double check before I potentially buy the a50x’s
what like are these mic for picking up background noise? i like the steelseries mic for cutting out background noise to zero but the gaming quality is just not there so been looking at these
So many questions lol How was the wireless range? Did it go as far as the old version? Did side tone have any latency? Does tempest 3d audio sound weird using the tv speakers version and not the headphones version?
Good call. Range was solid, and when I hit the limit, they just cut, none of that random static. Sideline was 100% spot on, no delay what so ever, and it sounded very clear as well. I would recommend Dolby atmos over 3D
Do you think this headset would work with older consoles like say a GameCube with an hdmi adapter plugged into it? Like if the sound will come out with just the hdmi pass through without usb tethered?
By the way, I think they stopped the optical port because there is a delay when you route it to your tv. Even if you have your tv on passthrough. It's a very common problem that people have brought up to them on Reddit. Sony should've never gotten rid of the optical port.
Can we finally get ChatMix on the headset for PS5? I think it was the A50 with the Basestation where you needed to buy an adapter for PS5. Does this headset use just the HDMI directly to the TV and have that enabled without losing any sound and visual quality?
about damn time... When I bough the my A50s a couple years ago, I didnt think id need to manually switch from my PC to my Console every time I changed platform. Ive always liked Astros and I might have to look into these. Yes my console and PC are hooked up in the same area so thats a plus for me.
I’m personally gonna pick these up for that convenient Switcher. Apparently you can also listen to PC audio and from one HDMI source. No more weird audio setups to play console games with friends chatting on Discord.
Considering getting a pair of these to replace my 700 turtle beaches. They utilize the usb dongle which makes it a breeze to use it with other systems. Is there any lag created from passing through the base station with the A50s
@@TheTechne Audeze Maxwell xbox should have arrived today.. seeing the "A50 x" did provoke the 'buyers remorse' but nice to see this additional comment, hope to have them tomorrow.
I was adamant about getting the new A50x when it came out but I saw the normal A50’s on sale and I snagged them up immediately. I only use PC and have been very very pleased with the quality of sound and hardware from my A50’s. I have 0 use in using the pass through as I own no consoles and personally hearing this makes it sound like they are the same as the normal A50’s. Pleased I only bought the A50’s and I appreciate watching this video as it made my decision more justified. Thanks for doing the review :)
I owned a pair of A50s in the past and had to return them due to sound cutting out. I know some people have sound cutting issues on the last generations and others have not. I wonder if the sound cutting out was resolved.
I return my Astro A30 yesterday because of that, the sounds was cut in and out all the time, I went to rig 900 max HX.. Much munch better than astro in ever aspect
So do the new A50X require that adapter box in order to connect them to the ps5 like the old a50? The older ones I had to go and buy that extra adapter in order to even use them for my ps5 which was pain because you practically had to use all the USB slots on the PlayStation.
Nice review 😃 my Question is do you have a static Sound By the new 50x.? When the Volume is higher or More in Game Sound. On the Xbox and pc it was easy Game Chat More to Chat then it was normal but on the PlayStation it was Bad Sound without the Adapter and with Adapter you have the Full static and wierd sounds but good Sound.Hopfully it is no More static sounds on the new astro a50x.
hi, great video. Here is the summary of the question: I would like to order the Astro A50 X in white version for use on PS5 only. I would like to use this model without the HDMI relay because I want to avoid any form of latency. Is it possible to operate by usb without HDMI? If so, what are the changes to cable and HDMI usage? Is it only the mixed cat?
You said in the video that the reason for the high cost is the base station. What’s the difference between the base station and lets say the xbox version Maxwell’s, where you could just switch the dongle to go from xbox to ps5/pc?? It’s not like im gonna be playing on my xbox and then suddenly switch to ps5 without turning off my xbox? Or am I missing something here??
Just to be clear, when I'm talking about sound, yes that is the same great quality across all platforms. The only downgrade in sound is if you run USB only.
PS: I know the new consoles don’t have optical, my point on the optical, was simplicity.

I also see a lot of people that just want the mic to be good but idc about the mic at all because I have a better standalone mic. Then again the A50 has an amazing mic to begin with.
Could be preference but I really havnt had a headset thats better or on par with the A50 either the same or higher cost. (around 300-400 euros)
Do the A50s sound quiet to you? Just switch from the A40s and while the A50s sound great, they sound way more quiet than my A50s not sure if i got a bad batch or that's just how they are but I've been looking for a second opinion on this
FYI I don’t think u can do 7.1 uncompressed on these new ones cause the base station doesn’t even have an opt port anymore, on the old gen 4 u could bet u needed a repeater in order for it to work
Finalllyy been waiting for them to release a new version ! Just out my order in ! Didn’t even know they released these. Glad i bumped into this random video at 6 am lol
Thank you stating that the ear cups are the same! I have been looking for this information since they announced them.
Is this a good thing?
@@sole_less Sure! Made them readily available right at launch. I was actually able to use my A50 Gen 4 earcups, which I loved!
Your are the one reviewer I wanted to for these. As I’ve watched the older A50s one this video is helpful. Thank You
But I have the series X and ps5.
How does it compare to the last gen in A50 in terms of sound quality? I dont need all the pass through stuff
(Hope I save you half a day work figuring this out LOL Astro) - I still love my Astro!
since these have been announced ive been waiting for this day couldnt wait for your review
Can you listen to multiple sources at the same time like PC USB and the Xbox HDMI at the same time kinda like how on the A40 dac you can hear the optical, USB, and 3.5mm inputs at the same time?
i also would like to know that.
I watched many reviews and asked everyone, but no answer still no answer... :/
Correct, my point is simplicity. Single connection
@@TheTechneSony does not allow any 3rd party access to their game/chat api controls so the only way for a 3rd party headset to be able to support hardware game/chat is to manually mix the two streams via optical and usb or HDMI and usb.
@@johnjames7332so does this head allow you to use game chat mix with the buttons or no?

I wonder if the Bluetooth module is in the base station and not the headset?
Hola tech eres la conga con cebolla me encantan tus videos tan geniales como siempre dime tu opinion que eligirias astro a50x o turtle beach steahl pro ??
Between these and the Maxwells what would you pick if money is no issue.
next vid :)
Nice! Looking forward to it. I sold my gx to go wireless again and it’s between the two. I have the a50 already. I like them but sound quality leaves a lot to be desired.
If I am just a PC gamer,
shall I go with the Astro A50X or with the Logitech G Pro X2 Lightspeed regarding sound and mic quality?
Or go with a totally different company in general?
Idk if you reviewed the audeze Maxwell or arctis nova pro wireless. If you did what pair would you recommend including the a50x?
Compared to how many features the A30s have, I am not sure these new A50s are worth that price. The only downside to the A30s is they don't come with the felt pads like the A20's, A40's, and old A10s and A50s.
Strange if the rest of the range had the felt earcups why not the A30s
Are the A50 earcups smaller?
they are the exact same size
@@TheTechne thanks a lot! Must be something in my head then haha.
@@RafitoOoO LOL
i have the old version of these and the one thing thats never talked about is that you can do 2 audio inputs from a PC at the same time (usb and optical). I LOVEEE this bc I can set discord chat flat and game sounds for surround sound. Its amazing and I would love to know what other headsets do this as well, bc now that im use to it, I wouldnt wanna go back to a headset without it.
Wait really
Yup! It’s such an amazing feature that is not talked or featured enough by techtubers and idk why. It’s a game changer.
If you use the surround mode then you arent hearing right
What’s better: Steelseries Artics Nova Pro Wireless or these?
Next video 😉
Do you have to use the hdmi pass through?? The reason why I ask,and no one is mentioning this with this headset, is that pass through is going to introduce latency of some sort as you’re putting something in between your tv to console. Not to mention the CEC handshaking issues this could potentially create if you have a soundbar or AVR.
Astro a50x or Audeze Maxwell?
I’ve had a50s and I currently have maxwells I always tend to go back to the a50s cuz the weight on the maxwells u definitely feel I like the heavy bass on the a50s more to Audeze are great but the comfort on a50s are unmatched imo
does anyone know if you can listen to audio from a console as well as a pc/mac at the same time?
I also really need this feature, like we have it now on the gen4.
If not, the A50x will be completely useless for me 😢
so which headset allows you to do this already? i havent seen a headset that allows you to listen to audio from a pc and console at the same time properly since they got rid of the optical port @@GTAundsuchtiii2407
A40’s great. A50’s top head pad pops out. Happened 2nd day I had them. Not mishandled.
Im using the arctis 7p from a few years ago around the ps5 launch. Would these be a big upgrade?
Get the Maxwell's, 90mm drivers, I love mine and you will love yours too. Be sure and get the wicked cushions for them, it makes them stinkin' cozy!
Want to get the maxwells but worried about the comfort due to all the reviews talking about the weight
@@HokieNation84 They are heavy but I wear them ALL day and they do not bother me. I DO have the wicked cushions with the cooling gel, so comfort is great, but I don't even notice the weight once I got used to it.
I have the old A50's and a 4k 120hz passthrough. Are the new ones a drastic upgrade from that?
Do you think these are much better than skill series headsets?
@@5dirty53 consider yourself lucky. I have had nonstop quality control issues with the Astro A50s gen3 through gen4.
Do you think they'll sell the base station alone ?? & if the old headset will be compatible with it or not ?
nope. i presume lightspeed is a diff kind of wireless tech than the past
Is it worth the upgrade over the a50 gen 4 ?
Will these work with the GoXLR? I can’t find an answer anywhere.
how's the pass through performance? did you notice any sound delay? because the last time I use hdmi pass through it gaves me that annoying delay
Are the Wicked Cushions for the a50 Gen 4 compatible with the X? When not i hope there come soon.
yes
My soul died a little when you said to bump up the lows and highs and turn down the mids. The mids are the most important part of any sound profile D:
Is it worth the upgrade from A40 TRs? Thx great review!
Are these better than my nova wireless pro?
Question? Why should I but this headset? Whats the difference?
If all we care about is sound, would you recommend the Logitech pro x 2?
the pro x2 is a dang good headset all around
Im thinking of upgrading from the g935 to the a50x, but the only benefit I got from this is the simplicity of cycling through different platforms with ease. The chunk of the cost is the bay station, so am I actually gonna get something better than what I already have or is the product mid with an overpriced charging dock.
Anything with this sound quality and comfort (wearing with glasses) strictly for PC?
Does the base station still include an amp along with the built in dolby surround sound?
Can i use the Bluetooth for mobile gaming like pubg mobile? Or do u recommend another headset
@the Techne Just a completely different question, which brand is the case you have on the iPhone?
It is exactly what I need in construction!
Can’t wait till next month. Been waiting for these
I can't stand fully closed headsets. I like the natural soundstage of open headsets. Actually, the A50s are more closed than the A40s. Seems it will be the same case for the A50x. Great review as always!
A problem I had with the a50s was whenever I put them on the headband would pop off every single time, is there any change on that on this version?
Can you have simultaneous audio via a console and PC at the same time? Or is it just one at a time?
i also really want to know this.
this feature was one of the main reasons for me to buy the a50 gen4
why would you need a console and pc audio at the same time though? honestly just curious the reasoning behind this.
Now for the big question $380 but do they sound better than the Maxwell which are $299?
Thank you.
I've been looking for a review since they announced it, amazing
With the a50x’s can you still be on ps5 mode and listen to music on pc at the same time? Want to be able to listen to both ps5 and pc at the same time, you can on the normal a50’s but just want to double check before I potentially buy the a50x’s
what like are these mic for picking up background noise? i like the steelseries mic for cutting out background noise to zero but the gaming quality is just not there so been looking at these
So many questions lol
How was the wireless range? Did it go as far as the old version?
Did side tone have any latency?
Does tempest 3d audio sound weird using the tv speakers version and not the headphones version?
Good call.
Range was solid, and when I hit the limit, they just cut, none of that random static.
Sideline was 100% spot on, no delay what so ever, and it sounded very clear as well.
I would recommend Dolby atmos over 3D
@@TheTechne thanks, for the answers! Super helpful.
On the 3d audio, I'm on ps5 so I don't think atmos is an option for me.
what’s the best headset i can get right now?
Will the second hdmi matter if I get a high speed one and use it in a 4K 60hz TV? Like can I still order the high speed one?
Do you think this headset would work with older consoles like say a GameCube with an hdmi adapter plugged into it? Like if the sound will come out with just the hdmi pass through without usb tethered?
the a50? they seem identical without the silly pass through.
The mic quality sounds amazing for a gaming headset! Massive improvement
By the way, I think they stopped the optical port because there is a delay when you route it to your tv. Even if you have your tv on passthrough. It's a very common problem that people have brought up to them on Reddit. Sony should've never gotten rid of the optical port.
Latency issues.
Can we finally get ChatMix on the headset for PS5? I think it was the A50 with the Basestation where you needed to buy an adapter for PS5. Does this headset use just the HDMI directly to the TV and have that enabled without losing any sound and visual quality?
Yes, if you get the x then it’ll work fine with ps5 but if you get the a50 gen 5 it won’t work for ps5 (chat mix etc)
about damn time...
Can you listen to Xbox and PlayStation audio at the same time?
Considering getting a pair of these to replace my 700 turtle beaches. They utilize the usb dongle which makes it a breeze to use it with other systems. Is there any lag created from passing through the base station with the A50s
Is this on the same sound level as the audeze maxwell ? i really look for a maxwell alternative.
Same
very close for sure, but planer drivers are always something special. Still these Are very very good, and fun to use.
I've got the orignals, the Halo edition. Can you tell me if they've improved the volume wheel as it's crap on mine.
A stupid question, if you forget to charge the headset, can you use it via a cable connection or are you forced to use wireless or Bluetooth?
hi, great video.
How does this compare to the astro a50 for xbox, also do these have Bluetooth so if someone calls while playing game you can talk to them.
It’s a 4k/120hz hdmi pass through
