Also you were one of the few to list such negatives for the pack and I really appreciated you pointing out your perceived flaws because I never would’ve heard that opinion about the divider, otherwise. I have the last model of this pack and I too questioned the decision on the divider flap. I ended up undoing it and now just load everything from the top. I also use a waterproof liner so the bottom zip became redundant. It's a very comfortable pack and I would give it the same score. Great job on the video, thanks.

Just got this for 120 at REI because the inner zipper to get to frame was broken. Never used. Looks brand new. I fixed the zipper in 30 minutes of tinkering with my wifes sowing tools lol. Score!
Great review. I already have the bag but was looking for some info on how to utilize all of its various straps and compartments. Thanks for the info. I got mine through their "renewed" program for $140 USD. Zero waste, and a bargain!
It's a very comfortable pack, I can get everything I need for at least a week inside it, love how it shapes itself to your body after a while, the only negative is that it makes a lot of noise, it creaks haha
Ciao OG! I agree with the lack of accesibility to the belt pockets!!! it's true! But the thing with the zipper in the divider never was a problem for me! I love mi Atmos!!!
On old Atmos AG models, 50L version doesn't have straps for foam sleeping pad. Only 65L version has. On this 2018 model straps are present even on 50L version, and it's great!
the hip belt is actually the thing that sold me the most on this pack. It feel like the pack is holding itself to your body and keeps it stable while supporting the weight. It felt awkward at first, but took me about 10 minutes to get used to it. It feels like it cuts the weight of the pack by over half. I have never typically been one for using hip belts because i never liked how they felt, and they never seemed to work for me. But this one is awesome. Also I get very warm very fast on hikes regardless of the climate, the anti gravity mesh back was the second thing that had me sold on this pack
Excellent review sir, I currently use a Karrimor SF Sabre 45L but need just a bit more space for long trips and I have been looking at this Osprey model for a while.

Hi Gijs, hope you are well. I see you have reviewed the Atmos AG 50 and the Kestrel 68. I’m aware there have been some changes to these models with that removal of the AG from the Aether range with the addition of the ‘plus’ which seems to replace the Xenith (debatable whether better or not). I’m looking for about 40-60l for winter camping. I have good quality compressible gear so I think it is doable without opting for 65-68l packs. I note the stow trekking poles have been removed on the Aether, that the Atmos doesn’t open like a clam shell for access, and the point you make regarding the closer feel of the Kestrel (I imagine that’s why they’ve removed the AG from the Aether range). With all the above in mind would you still opt for the Kestrel (58 in my case) over the Aether 55 (if you’ve seen one) or the Atmos AG range. I have a Xenith 88 fit when I’m carrying the kitchen sink for the family on backpacking / interrail trips so this is that happy medium for carrying in summer for the family (their gear to a degree too) or my own gear for the winter. I’ll use the Xenith if I need to carry the families gear in the winter.
The adjustable divider is better than a zip because not everyone has the same size sleeping bag or gear for the bottom of the bag. As for losing keys lol
IMO, it depends on what you´re carrying inside that compartment, since carrying a sleeping bag is not the same as carrying a pair of smelly boots/clothes. Most sleeping bags will fit in there, but you can do nothing about sharing the same space with BOTH your dirty and clean clothes... ;) I actually think this is a fantastic backpack, and that particular feature is the only one stopping me from pulling the trigger. On both sides..... you mean like a lid for the sleeping bag? Would be useful but is also is a extra zipper making it make expensive and a bit more vulnerable maybe.
This is an excellent review, thank you. As a short guy, though, what I dislike about this backpack is that is unusually tall for its volume (I hate banging my head against the backpack), and the fact that its length is more than likely to make it unsuitable as hand-luggage on airplanes. As such, I´m considering the Osprey Stratos 50, the Lowe Alpine Camino 40-50 and the Lowe Alpine Trek 45-55. May I ask if you have had any experience with them, and if so, how would you compare them to this backpack? Thanks! P.S. Thank you for the positive feedback! I do understand your problem but with the Atmos I only had this experience a few times and it did not bother me. The Camino is a bit better in this way but also depends on how you pack it: bit.ly/2UaszfE I don't think the Stratos will solve it. This is a curvy backpack too. Maybe have a look at the more simpel designs from Bach. They make packs that are more like a column and because of their carrying systeem without 'airspace' they are straighter. I am testing a Packster 32 now. Too small for you in size. Have peek at this one: bit.ly/2Q6wo74 The same is the case with the Thule packs bit.ly/2SozBLS But... could you cope with a smaller pack. I saw your review for each one of them, but I can't decide which one I will buy. I've got a list of some questions, if you don't mind to answer them: 1st) On Atmos the top is detachable, but I could not find out if Kestrel have this feature too. Does it have? 2nd) Is the Atmos back system better than the Kestrel? I don't have a store to test it, but since I'm in Brazil, it's great to have a good ventilation associated to the confort of a great back system too. 3rd) I think that Atmos 65 have a side zipper to access the main compartment, but since you are testing the 50 liters model, maybe it doesn't have. Anyway, which one do you prefer: Atmos side zipper or Kestrel U ziper? I think you should try to make some comparisons with your personal opinion, which is great, of similar types of any item, making the choice easier for us! :)

I'll do my best: 1)The Kestrel top is detachable. 2)Back system is very different: the Atmos is the better ventilating one and comfy too. 3)Side zipper is not on the 50 and it looks like a U-zipper on the 65 Side or U Zipper... No zipper for trekking (less is more) is my choice. For backpacking and hotels etc... Zipper is convenient. Last point: I do agree. I'm about late, but I have the Atmos AG65, and the side zips do not go to the main compartment. There are two flat pockets down the length of the pack, but they do not go into the main bag. It is a very good pack, however, so I would recommend it.

Apparently the rain cover is only integrated in the top pack in Europe. I just purchased this pack in the US and the rain cover is an option sold separately.
Outdoorguru , no worries, I wouldn’t have expected you to know Osprey offered it differently in the US compared to Europe. I suspect that’s because a large area of the US hiking Parker has the pleasure of dry weather. Where I live is more like the European climate so I purchased the rain cover accessory. Osprey’s MSRP IS $30. My only complaint is that it is not attached like the integrated rain cover so it could easily get misplaced.
Hello guys, i have to share my experience with this backpack. I order it from thé internet without even trying that out cause of all the positive reviews about its comfort when wearing. Thé backpack Is very nice but thé only problem I had was with the hip belt that was very uncofortable. Afterwhile I had ache on my hip bones. I try to reconfigure thé hights of thé shoulder straps and it did not work fór me. So I had to send it back and change it for kestrel which fits perfectly fór me. So dont be like me And definetly go try it in shop! 😊

I would have really liked the top lid to be wearable as a waist bag and a front opening to access to all the stuff inside easily. I would easily sacrifice the sleeping bag aperture for that...it would have been just a perfect piece of equipment with those. Why don't you test the Thule Versant 50l which has these features? :)

I need to take a new backpack and I am really doubtful between the atmos 50 AG (which I tried on my shoulders) and the thule versant (which has all the features I would like to have)....hard choice
How do you fasten the poles? Please provide other example of how you might attach other items using the array of fasteners and loops. Thank you. Indeed, the hip belts are a PIA at first, but the payoff is worth the hassle. Agree too, the pocket zippers are ridiculous -- takes some strength in both hands to open and close. The bottom divider bothered me at first, but talk about a first-world problem! I find no video showing how to adjust strap height and hip belt extension -- is that a feature of this model?
Dear Zadfrack, To attach cups etc I use small carabiners or little ropes in loops. Easy and fast. The attachment point are usually the daisy chains. This is 4.5 stars but the kestral 68 is 9.1 in your ratings which is slightly annoying lol, I'm very torn between both packs which one is better? On the Atmos 65 is dont like the soft material straps as they don't seem durable, and I'll don't like the sprung waist straps, however I do like the mesh back and it would be better if it was more solid like the Lowe alpine airzone packs, is one of the packs more significant in any way to the other?
Hi Arthur, Yes, I went from stars to points since it give me more room to play with. But the rating from 4.5 or 9.1 is the same since I like the packs for different reasons the same. Marvellous reviews you do Sir. I have to ask, did you use anything to prop the bag upright in some of your shots, I thought these bags tended to roll backwards because of the hip belt configuration? Also, do you have any issue with the belt creaking sounds. Kind regards.
Thank you! Yes and no. Sometimes when I have a stubborn backpack but most of the times they sit nicely. The Atmos is different in many ways and sometimes needs a stick or a tree to lean on too. Creaking sounds.... not that I remember. Nice motorbike with sidecar ;-) Cheers, Gijs
Hi, If you think that the mesh pocket on the outside is more important than the rest... you are right. I did shoot it but - yes - I forgot to put it in the edit. I was so excited about this bag from what I’ve researched, but I tried on the S/M male Atmos Ag 65 and the female M/L Atmos 50 and the Aura version with 9kg bags so 12kg altogether and none of them felt right :/ It felt like they were all tipping slightly back. I was gutted because I thought one of these models would be perfect. I’m a 5ft 10 female. I felt pressure pinching on my shoulders and tipping back a little. I’m wondering what I could try next, it was the Exos but both shops didn’t have them.

Tipping back is more a 'how to pack' issue than a backpack issue and also how do you adjust straps etc. But if you tried in a shop the shop should be able to help and find the correct way. fact: lime shoes, not every backpack fits everybody. Yes do so. 9 kg in the bottom is not going to help for the best testing. Try a sleeping bag in the bottom and put the weight on top. I suppose you have seen the video I did on how to pack a backpack: th-cam.com/video/eE_4MjUo-bY/w-d-xo.html
So just one opening for the main compartment? You had to throw everything out one by one in order to get to the bottom.. Wish had a U zipper opening at the belly

Hi Zahinn, Well... they are totally different: Fjall makes clean no nonsense packs made of sturdy material but the carrying system is big difference. I am reviewing a Singi 48 at the moment... Are you in a hurry? The Ospreys are sturdy too, don't worry about that.

I would like to ask a couple of questions: - May I know what are the differences between the older and the newer Atmos 50 that you showed in the video and what is the better version for you and why, please? - For Trekking/hiking of 5/7 days in summer, in autonomy, do you think a 50lt bag should be enough or, with a bag like that, you can do hiking of a week but sleeping in facilities/shelters? I've realized that the zipper is much easier to close if you keep the strap near it tight.

Yes, just like the Aether 60 AG, which for me is perfect in design but way bigger than my need.
But maybe a Lowe Alpine would do the trick?

Great review, thank you! I would like to know the differences between the Atmos AG 65 and Kestrel 68. Could you share your experience with both of this backpacks? I saw your review for each one of them, but I can't decide which one I will buy. I've got a list of some questions, if you don't mind to answer them:
1st) On Atmos the top is detachable, but I could not find out if Kestrel have this feature too. Does it have?
2nd) Is the Atmos back system better than the Kestrel? I don't have a store to test it, but since I'm in Brazil, it's great to have a good ventilation associated to the confort of a great back system too.
3rd) I think that Atmos 65 have a side zipper to access the main compartment, but since you are testing the 50 liters model, maybe it doesn't have. Anyway, which one do you prefer: Atmos side zipper or Kestrel U ziper?
I think you should try to make some comparisons with your personal opinion, which is great, of similar types of any item, making the choice easier for us! :)
Dear Ingra, Thanks for the comment and questions. I'll do my best:
1)The Kestrel top is detachable.
2)Back system is very different: the Atmos is the better ventilating one and comfy too.
3)Side zipper is not on the 50 and it looks like a U-zipper on the 65
Side or U Zipper... No zipper for trekking (less is more) is my choice. For backpacking and hotels etc... Zipper is convenient.
Last point: I do agree. I am working on a series of tutorial and backpacks is one of them ;-))

I'm about late, but I have the Atmos AG65, and the side zips do not go to the main compartment. There are two flat pockets down the length of the pack, but they do not go into the main bag. It is a very good pack, however, so I would recommend it.

Apparently the rain cover is only integrated in the top pack in Europe. I just purchased this pack in the US and the rain cover is an option sold separately.

Outdoorguru , no worries, I wouldn’t have expected you to know Osprey offered it differently in the US compared to Europe. I suspect that’s because a large area of the US hiking Parker has the pleasure of dry weather. Where I live is more like the European climate so I purchased the rain cover accessory. Osprey’s MSRP IS $30. My only complaint is that it is not attached like the integrated rain cover so it could easily get misplaced.

Hello guys, i have to share my experience with this backpack. I order it from thé internet without even trying that out cause of all the positive reviews about its comfort when wearing. Thé backpack Is very nice but thé only problem I had was with the hip belt that was very uncofortable. Afterwhile I had ache on my hip bones. I try to reconfigure thé hights of thé shoulder straps and it did not work fór me. So I had to send it back and change it for kestrel which fits perfectly fór me. So dont be like me And definetly go try it in shop! 😊

I had the same problem tried it on in shop,ok fine,but after a few miles my hips started feeling really sore,kestrel is definitely more comfortable
I would have really liked the top lid to be wearable as a waist bag and a front opening to access to all the stuff inside easily. I would easily sacrifice the sleeping bag aperture for that...it would have been just a perfect piece of equipment with those.
Why don't you test the Thule Versant 50l which has these features? :)

Indeed, the hip belts are a PIA at first, but the payoff is worth the hassle. Agree too, the pocket zippers are ridiculous -- takes some strength in both hands to open and close. The bottom divider bothered me at first, but talk about a first-world problem!
I find no video showing how to adjust strap height and hip belt extension -- is that a feature of this model?
Dear Zadfrack, To attach cups etc I use small carabiners or little ropes in loops. Easy and fast. The attachment point are usually the daisy chains. This is 4.5 stars but the kestral 68 is 9.1 in your ratings which is slightly annoying lol, I'm very torn between both packs which one is better? On the Atmos 65 is dont like the soft material straps as they don't seem durable, and I'll don't like the sprung waist straps, however I do like the mesh back and it would be better if it was more solid like the Lowe alpine airzone packs, is one of the packs more significant in any way to the other?
Hi Arthur, Yes, I went from stars to points since it give me more room to play with. But the rating from 4.5 or 9.1 is the same since I like the packs for different reasons the same. Marvellous reviews you do Sir. I have to ask, did you use anything to prop the bag upright in some of your shots, I thought these bags tended to roll backwards because of the hip belt configuration? Also, do you have any issue with the belt creaking sounds. Kind regards.
Thank you! Yes and no. Sometimes when I have a stubborn backpack but most of the times they sit nicely. The Atmos is different in many ways and sometimes needs a stick or a tree to lean on too. Creaking sounds.... not that I remember. Nice motorbike with sidecar ;-) Cheers, Gijs

Hi, If you think that the mesh pocket on the outside is more important than the rest... you are right. I did shoot it but - yes - I forgot to put it in the edit. I was so excited about this bag from what I’ve researched, but I tried on the S/M male Atmos Ag 65 and the female M/L Atmos 50 and the Aura version with 9kg bags so 12kg altogether and none of them felt right :/ It felt like they were all tipping slightly back. I was gutted because I thought one of these models would be perfect. I’m a 5ft 10 female. I felt pressure pinching on my shoulders and tipping back a little. I’m wondering what I could try next, it was the Exos but both shops didn’t have them.

Tipping back is more a 'how to pack' issue than a backpack issue and also how do you adjust straps etc. But if you tried in a shop the shop should be able to help and find the correct way. fact: lime shoes, not every backpack fits everybody. Yes do so. 9 kg in the bottom is not going to help for the best testing. Try a sleeping bag in the bottom and put the weight on top. I suppose you have seen the video I did on how to pack a backpack: th-cam.com/video/eE_4MjUo-bY/w-d-xo.html
So just one opening for the main compartment? You had to throw everything out one by one in order to get to the bottom.. Wish had a U zipper opening at the belly
Hi J, Well, it is a choice. Not having a large U-zipper like the th-cam.com/video/KLTsiX0EHZc/w-d-xo.html makes the pack a bit more sturdy for harsh conditions. The U-zipper packs are a bit more practical for B&B like trips. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe!

Hi Zahinn, Well... they are totally different: Fjall makes clean no nonsense packs made of sturdy material but the carrying system is big difference. I am reviewing a Singi 48 at the moment... Are you in a hurry? The Ospreys are sturdy too, don't worry about that.

What’s the difference compared to your old pack?
- Improved backpanel fabric which prevents mesh from stretching over time
- Adding pull tabs to the torso adjustment
- Repatterning the side compression webbing for easier pocket access
- Nylon panel reinforcements to better protect stretch mesh
- Easier lid removal
- Fit improvements for better support of heavier loads
- Improved colour pallette on both Atmos and Aura

- May I know what are the differences between the older and the newer Atmos 50 that you showed in the video and what is the better version for you and why, please?
- For Trekking/hiking of 5/7 days in summer, in autonomy, do you think a 50lt bag should be enough or, with a bag like that, you can do hiking of a week but sleeping in facilities/shelters?
