  • Is AI fashion the future? Will fashion designers be replaced by bots? There’s alot of new AI fashion image generators out there right now, but should designers be worried about being replaced? Should designers be worried about the AI fashion and their careers as fashion creatives?

This is a question that many new and seasoned creatives are asking across the board. Artificial Intelligence tools will of course be integrated in the future of the creative process. And just like what happened with all the tools that came before, some people will be displaced but more will be brought into the fold. Many will be good, most will be not so good. When desktop publishing came about in the late 80's there was a huge influx of new "designers" that wanted to create art and books and magazines. It was fun for a while but most found it unsustainable to do for the long haul and few around today. The same happened with 3D animation versus 2D hand drawn work and again with video and music. Whatever happens next with AI tools related to art, fashion and creativity, many will come, few will stay for long.
    BTW, those renders were amazing!

my step daughter is about to spend a fortune on education for career in fashion design. And the universities have nothing about ai in their courses. They will happily take $50k in fees and just release these students in 4 years time with no ai training into an environment full of ai assisted designers. Already in just one year of ai were are seeing so many creative jobs go by the wayside. And thats with 1 industry leader, now openAI already has serious competitiors, That will accelerate it, so In 4 years these systems will possibly have super creative general intelligence that just respond instantly with anything thats asked of them in any domain.

Hi Mikelle, what about textile design? The only skill I see here is to be good at descriptions and let the machine do all the work for you. It’s cool and fun and useful sometimes, maybe soon will convey also that emotional and personal human touch who knows? Yes, in fashion more other factors are involved, we can’t say that for other fields, it’s not that hard to use after all and designers will definitely need to use it because of growing, trendy automation. Design programs are much more complex and you really have to put the work. It’s nice to see what can be generated, but it is what it is: a machine rendering based on a tremendous amount of data (many of which copyrighted, no they’re not just learning references). Plus, it’s addictive (like social media), a coincidence right?! It’s not even a tool (I hear this all the time, so people feel legitimate not to specify it’s Ai art, now we have Ai artists, artists of what? Prompts?) because the main goal was to sell those subscriptions, devaluing art with the excuse of empowering people thanks to technology.

Hi @rosellaleonadi2908! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate you:)
I think it can be a great tool for textile designers. I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it’s great for that. It doesn’t always make a seamless repeat so you still need to understand the principles of textile design and printing. But it can be a great tool for ideation!
As far as fashion, I think it can also be a great tool. But you’re right, it’s a machine rendering. Besides the copyright issues, the AI can generate interesting ideas but not always something that can actually be made into a physical product.
I have no words about the new AI artists, but I will say that creating the right prompts to get a really great rendering does take some skill.
For any designer, I think it’s great for generating new ideas. And then the designer needs to create something from that idea. It’s inspiration! And it IS addictive! I experienced that making this video:)
But as I mentioned at the end of the video, you’re still going to need your design training to do anything with that AI design if it’s going to go past just being a picture.

@@383design thank you 🙏 Mikelle. I think it’s a great tool for ideation as well. Especially because designers have always a lot of pressure and less time. Problem is that many people sell artwork online. You can’t compete with a machine. We’re not machines. That’s it. One good pattern may take a day or more to be made. In any case, we don’t have layers to really edit the pattern yet, thank God!). I mean, are we looking for better art (this is valid also for traditional/digital art) or for more art? I don’t get it. Is it a matter of money, of visual bulimia, of success having a system that generates artwork without any artistic process whatsoever? If Ai art is done well (not just technically), I even appreciate it (again, for what it is = generated art). I recognize it takes a bit of practice to translate your ideas into prompts and then see what happens, retry etc. but it is way more articulate, creative and truly rewarding (and stressful!) to do it yourself. I guess for some people it’s a BIG opportunity, that’s why they don’t care and they’re into it. Today we call digital creators people who have OnlyFans, so no wonder (and no judgment either). Well, now I go shading the little frog I am trying to paint with my IPad lol.

It seems like a cool, but I honestly only see it as an inspiration tool. Like Pinterest! As far as it replacing designers, I don't see that happening at all. No software/machine can precisely see the design exactly the way you see it.

    • @383design
      @383design  ปีที่แล้ว

Agree! A very cool inspiration tool, but not only does the designer know exactly what he/she/they want, the designer also has the expertise to execute and make it into a physical product.

I think it will except in a small number of cases. First of all the next generation of ai will be hyper creative exceeding us. There is no point in making career plans if they dont include ai tendency to accelerate super fast. We arent as special as we believe we are. ai already is creative anyway and everybody was a naysayer of what current ai can do. Second of all what will a ceo of clothes business prefer. A team of ultra creative super fast ai thats entertaining and they talk to and swipe guide at home in their augmented reality glasses and costs peanuts. So fast that customers can have unlimited cheap bespoke clothing customisation. Or a bunch of expensive slow staff in offices doing things the old way that takes ages and argues back, needs persuaded, have performance glitches, steep limits and everyday issues that they have to micro manage and cant fire due to increasing worker rights. The only designers left will be those supervising teams of Ai apps within augmented reality. That a CEO can have Augmented reality meetings with and ask what they came up with. By this time the detail in these systems will be as high as human visual systems. So textures, movement of clothes etc will be extremely apparent.

Thanks for your perspective. I guess I have to see what next gen AI has to offer. Right now, I'm already seeing people complaining about how they can see duplicative resumes and sketches from people who were CLEARLY using AI. I'm not convinced yet that AI will completely replace a designer. I DO think that designers needs to understand how to leverage it if they plan to continue to work in the industry.
You're also giving some of these executives more credit than they deserve. Fashion is not that progressive. Even though they're always forward thinking when it comes to garments, they aren't as progressive when it comes to technology. It took years for them to be OK buying simple styles from CADs. It's a stretch for them to never get samples and just work digitally, although we are pushing for it so that we're not generating so much waste.
My last point is in response to "unlimited cheap bespoke clothing customisation." We shall see. Right now, people are moving more towards buying LESS, although you wouldn't know it with the profits being reported by fast fashion companies like SHEIN. Cheap bespoke clothing is a direct contradiction of what people SAY they want in fashion, which is more sustainability and better clothing.
It'll be interesting to see how all of this evolves in the coming years. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!
