Hmm, I swim over arm side stroke, which goes back to the late 1800s or so. I figured it out from picking up the CSS after seeing a couple of young Navy kids in the pool, and a 'what happens if you take your top arm over the top like freestyle' thing. I did try to modify my scissor kick to be more like the modern 'whip' kick that all the breast strokers use now days, so much closer to the body like rather than the 2 examples you show here. Then, once while swimming full power 25 yard sprints, I accidentally slipped into flutter kick. That ended up taking 3 seconds off of my 50 yard sprint time. The scissor kick is necessary if you don't have full use of your arms and hands to pull through the water, which you have to do in life saving modes. For speed and efficiency, I have found a 4 beat flutter kick much faster and more energy efficient. It changes the overarm side stroke from a kick and glide stroke to a constant motion stroke like freestyle and back stroke. It is far faster than breast stroke and back stroke, but not as fast as freestyle. Arm pull is like back stroke, so more of the 2 blade propeller than the more catch up style for distance freestyle. Oh, I am 70 now...Not sure with the CSS if they have full use of hands or not. I would think that when using fins, the flutter kick would also be much more efficient than the scissor kick. It does turn the side stroke into a long axis stroke and flip turns work perfectly.
