- Hi, I am Gunjan Dhanuka and I finished my CS undergrad at IIT Guwahati. I will be joining MS CS at Carnegie Mellon University and this is a series of videos on my Higher Education journey.
I scored 331/340 in GRE in 2023, with 170/170 in Quant and 161/170 in Verbal.
In this video, we'll take a detailed approach to understanding the GRE exam, managing your time efficiently, and shaping a study plan that fits into a month. We will be talking about each and every section, i.e., Verbal, Quant, and also about the vocabulary. I'll share the books and apps that personally helped me, and if you're interested, you can easily grab them by filling out a simple form. I scored 332 on the GRE (165 Quant, 167 Verbal) on 15-Aug-2024 after two weeks of focused preparation. While that may seem like a short prep time, it's important to note that I come from a data science background, with over 4 years of experience working with math and data, as well as 16 years of formal education in mathematics.
For those with strong math fundamentals and practical experience, preparing for the GRE Quant section is less about learning new concepts and more about revisiting familiar ones. By focusing on targeted review and mock tests, you can efficiently reinforce your knowledge and improve your score.
In addition, I took the IELTS just a week before starting my GRE prep, scoring 7.5 after 10 days of study. As a professional who communicates regularly with UK and US colleagues, my daily use of English played a significant role in helping me perform well in the GRE Verbal section.
For IT professionals or those working in technical fields, these exams are more manageable than they might seem at first glance. With a solid foundation and focused revision, success is definitely within reach.

You can't get a 330+ score with a month of preparation. The GRE tests fundamental concepts which you learn all throughout school (or your life). Meaning a 330+ score is the result of essentially years of prep.

I got a 310 on my first try (not too worried about that because my plan was always to take it twice anyways) and I messed up a wee bit on the quant section. And funny thing is the second I got back home all the solutions just came to me when I couldn’t think straight during the actual test. Even though I have always been a straight A student in all subjects (math included), I don’t feel particularly confident in math for some reason even when I know I’m smart and understand the concepts. Any advice😔 tysm for the video though!!

No I gave the longer GRE. However from the feedback I have received from my friends, the prep for newer GRE is pretty similar.

I just wanted to ask, as you said to follow only the official books for the GRE, whether they are for quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, or the GRE exam guide, along with "Word Power." You also mentioned the Manhattan study material. Are these enough? I see a lot of stuff you have shared via links, so it’s very hectic to go through each and every material.

Did you give the new GRE format or old one? I think in AWA there is only one task (issue)

what study material would you suggest for someone who is weak at Quants
I would say that you can solve the entire Manhattan 5lb book for better practice
what would you suggest for someone with about 150 in verbal but much lower in quant to do? i got about a month left and not sure where to focus now!

Hi Gunjan, I am final year btech student from IIT Dhanbad, I want to prepare for GRE for MS in Mechanical Engineering, is it too late for this year ? also I have to focus on my academics and placement season. This exam fee is not that cheap so that I can give it for a try so I am planning to give GRE in december because I will have 20 days break to prepare and give gre test. But till then it will get too late for other procedures to do.
What should I do?
