Lego Racers: Basil the Batlord’s Revenge
I watched a LR1 speedrun recently and took a double take when I thought for a second it said "Basil the Bastard." I was like "woah this is the game I played as a kid?"
That idea must be come true
More like Lego Racers 3:Return to Lego Island.
Lego racers 1 was creative, well designed, interesting characters and unique cars, and last but not least it was FUN to play. I could stay hours in the customization menu inventing new cars and chars or even trying to recreate Bosses and "minions" cars. The races were always exciting, the maps were unique and never frustrating, and the music in the background was just perfection.

I get where your coming from about putting actual car brands into lego racers. But the thing is, Wouldn't it strive away from what the original racers were about. They were about creativity, Not set cars by the game. I think instead they should release a full on sequel with Customisable cars, Open world (Kind of like The second one,) And All the original racers including rocket racer. I think that would be a better sequel, But that's just my opinion.
I totally get where you're coming from and I probably could've been clearer about what my ideal pitch would be. I completely agree and would want to see car customization in any future Racers iterations, I was more trying to say that with the Speed Champions licenses in place LEGO would be better equipped to make a game that would appeal to fans of more arcade-style racers as well as fans of simulator-esque racers like Forza and whatnot. But I'd 100% want custom built cars in a real Racers sequel. Thanks for watching! - Jake

Completely agree. The reason I'm so nostalgic towards the game is the colorful graphics depicting Lego sets I or my older cousins had IRL. My dream scenario would be Lego Racers 3 being a celebration of original Lego IP:s from throughout history. Customization is included in that as it at least was Lego's core idea until it was just franchise tie-ins.

In this day and age where some dormant video game franchises are receiving remakes to bring them out of retirement, Lego Racers is the *PERFECT* game to receive a remake. And should it succeed, we could get a Lego Racers 3.
4 years later and Lego will publish a new racing game. Im really happy that they will try this amazing genre. But i really hope that they will make something similar to Lego Rock Raiders.
As someone who believed that they wouldn't have the full scope of what happened to these games, this summarization of what happened, is exactly what I needed. Great work, and thanks for putting all this together.

If they ever remake it, they should upgrade the gameplay a little too (the physics and the difficulty is not that good nowadays) and let you play over the internet as well, but indeed I'd love to see that too !

I honestly never thought I’d see the day when we’d have any iteration of a LEGO racing game on a next gen console. Really hoping this Forza expansion can pave the way for a proper standalone game from someone like Codemasters. Hell, an Avalanche developed LEGO Racers would be wild.

Anyone watching this video now has probably already seen it, but announcements were made today for Lego 2k Drive. Its looks like we're back.
3:47 I saw that page on an old LEGO catalog I had ages ago! I was wondering what it was and, since I'm a huge sucker for arcade racers like Burnout, wanted to play it! But there was literally nothing else about it and my young self was super confused at the time. Where was this game and why does no one have it???
Seeing that page immediately reminded me of that time and seeing being talked about really intrigued me. It really bummed me out cause from those screenshots, having to build your own car excited me as a kid.
I wish LEGO are still thinking about reviving this game
it just occured to me how many LEGO Racers sets i bought in the mid-late 2000s. I also played the heck out of Racers 1, 2, and Drome Racers for GCN. Great times

I think probably the main reason why Lego is not making any new racing games is probably because not only Lego was in financial troubles in the early 2000s but maybe at the time there was not a huge demand for racing, I think it’s sort of similar to Lego trains, and the reason why I mentioned that is because while Lego trains were popular throughout the late 1960s up to the early 2010s and that’s when there is not a huge demand for that Lego property. But on the bright side and 22 years later Lego finally announced a brand new Lego racing game coming out next month in May called Lego 2K Drive.
Eh, it's a bit of a different thing. The train issue kinda goes hand-in-hand with the state of model railroading - people want realistic trains, not toyish "foobies" (a model railroading term used to refer to any model that's a loose approximation of the prototype rather than an accurate model), so most of the LEGO train crowd is focusing on MOCs based on real locomotives and rolling stock.
The lack of a racing game seems to stem more from TT just wanting to shovel out the same formulaic game style and LEGO not wanting to get involved with any other developers until relatively recently.
Lego in the last couple of years has been getting more nostalgic and doing some re-hashing of old sets, themes, and characters. My guess is because all of us who were young in the late 90s-early 2000s are now adults with their own money. They've re-released a pirate ship with a return of Captain Redbeard, a mansion that belongs to Baron Von Baron (of the Adventurers/Orient Expedition theme) and they recently released a poll for some anniversary set coming in the next year or two, basically asking participants which old themes they would like to see resurrected.
So I 100% see your point that Lego has a fertile market to launch a new Racers game. I would even add that nostalgia has never been higher for the company and they seem to understand the return to their roots is not only popular among young adults now, but it's massively profitable. To get an open-world, modern, Racers game with customizable cars, and chock FULL of the old characters we all knew and loved growing up would probably smashing enough of a success that I would cave and buy it.
Just imagining Darth Vader in James Bonds Aston Martin vs. Voldemort in the Batmobile , the cross franchise possibilities are endless

I've been waiting for a proper sequel to the original Lego Racers since my disappointment with Lego Racers 2. Crazy to think about it, but trying to get into the gamedev industry right now, who knows, maybe i'll get the chance to push for a new entry someday.

@@MrMaikiu the first one I played was the second one. I remember being a kid and seeing a CD case of it in a store and asking my dad to buy me one. I rushed home and I think I stayed for 6 hours playing it and I loved it!
I played the first game some years later and I have to say the first one was straight to the point while the second one had more freedom with side quests and a good story.
They made my childhood more fun and for that I am thankful for the developers
I see this and I instantly thought of an Idea for Lego Racers 3 to be more of a sequel from the rest of the classic Lego games. I highly doubt my idea would see the light of day but having another sequel that continues off the first two would be more ideal

The older games were original and really had a soul to them that was there own, the "modern" Lego games are now all soulless "kiddie" versions of other IP's, to such an extent that the fact it's all made of Legos feeling like one big afterthought.
(And no, I don't count Worlds or the ill-fated Universe, they're mostly forgotten for a reason.)
I recently picked up the motorcycle stunt mini pack with Rocket Racer.
They haven't _forgotten_ Racers, but man do I wish they'd make another entry.
LEGO just needs to throw a bunch of money at Codemasters or some other studio with a hefty racing game pedigree and just let them go to town.

I think the LEGO City: Undercover games are kind of the closest we’ve gotten to a spiritual successor to the Island franchise, though I would love a proper LEGO Island 4 as long as we’re daydreaming.

I feel like some of the most charming mechanics in LEGO Island would be lost at such a large size.
The custom vehicles, the crazy races and missions that require you to know the island front to back, the toying around with every citizen's look, it was all a lot of fun, but it wouldn't make much sense when you've got hundreds of unique citizens, and much higher maneuverability.
I'm mostly thinking of the original, since I didn't grow up with, and still haven't played 2 or 3. But I guess as the sequels progressed, from what I've seen, they slowly morphed into what Undercover became, to an extent

I'd love it if Milestone - developers of Hot Wheels Unleased - got the chance to make a Lego Racers successor. They seem to be the gold standard of the genre at the moment.
That said, it seems that 2K has the licence now to make a Lego Racers game, which could be pretty cool - if it doesn't end in the pile of abandoned lego projects.
TT games is having their exclusive licence expire after lego star wars the skywalker saga and 2K games, the new partner, is making a new lego racing game.
I would say that Forza Horizon 4 is kind of Lego Racers 3 (Because of the Speed Champions DLC)

Interesting story there, I too would have loved to see a new Lego Racers game, though I wasn't aware of all this blah blah blah that went one behind the scenes. I've only been thinking about it the last few days, but I recently started watching Lego Stunt Rally again and a courageous thought sprung to mind. I thought it would be great if they did a similar remake of the original Lego Racers but incorporate some of the drivers from Stunt Rally in the actual races and replacing some of the other races who just use plan go-kart type vehicles. Some of the original characters should remain but for the final circuit it would be epic if we had a grid of drivers in Mr. X the stunt rally world champion, Baron Flambo, Barney and Brad Speedo alongside Rocket Racer in the final circuit, or have Mr. X as the third to last boss in a circuit featuring proper race tracks. Like they did with CTR Nitro Fueled , it would be great if they were to keep things close to the original as possible but just with better graphics and the same character quotes I used to love listening to every time you hit someone with a power-up or overtook them on track. A remake like this might look out of place in terms of how Lego has moved on, but it would be great to bring back all these childhood memories again with a 3rd remake 20 years on. That would be awesome!

Great idea, though I think the current LEGO City Stuntz range is sort of an homage to LEGO Racers - they even have Rocket Racer in there as a minifigure.
Is there any way to play these games on modern PCs? Or would I have to go purchase a gamecube/playstation?
Emulation might be the easiest method, but I still play them on my ancient Dell Inspiron laptop that still runs on Windows XP, so I’m probably not a good source of information on that front.

They just don't want to answer for the crime that is never having made a Rocket Racer set even though he's had 2, count 'em 2, designs.
I am still floored that he never became a physical set, especially the Evel Knievel look.
Well, not too long after this video came out in fact Lego did license the Speed Champions out for another video game release, but it was the pretty mediocre Forza Horizon Lego Speed Champions content, which did little more than introduce a small Lego-themed world and a grand total of four cars. I guess it was far cheaper and easier to get on the market like this, riding off an existing successful game, and I'd hazard a guess that the venture ultimately made their money back and then some. At the same time, I'm with you and everyone else in wishing they would be even a bit more ambitious in the future.
Like aight hear me out i want next lego racers game but i dont want it as polished and like futuristic and modern like everything made out of legos any what not i want like old lego games where only key things were legos and most of the world looked realistic this is just my opinion but it would make for such a nostalgic feeling

Oh yeah, the building system was a bit more robust and there was a free-roam mode where you could travel around all the maps as you wished. The power up system was more similar to Mario Kart instead of the brick-based power ups of the first game, but all in all it was a very good sequel.
It took a while but it's coming finally, I think the Superhero thing killed everything it was about the minifigure not the brick

The high quality snippets were from LEGO Speed Champions promotional material, and I agree that we desperately need remasters of the first two games! I actually haven’t played the Forza DLC yet but it looks super fun.

Yeah the Forza stuff was definitely cool, but still just more of a throwback than a real Racers game. 2024 is Racer’s 25th anniversary, so we can hope LEGO might capitalize on that.

Lego Racers 3 already did since it, Racers 2, and Lego Racers arcade were all made by Attention to Detail. The arcade game was just a watered down Lego Racers on ATD's Rollcage engine anyway.

lego Racer 1 was the best, the second had a nice fight mode, just the radar sucked
I do remember the radar being bad in Racers 2, and I wasn't a fan of the more simplified "Kart-style" power up system - but I think the customization was better, and I had a lot of fun with the Free Roam modes. That being said, I'd definitely prefer a sequel in the style of Racers 1 more than 2, or a remaster of 1.

rock raiders is actually alive and well. Visit the RRU website and they have a slew of things for the game and other classic LEGO games.
LEGO Racers 3 would be bought by pretty much everyone who has kids and owns a Nintendo Switch. I mean the production cost is super low of such a game. So it wont be as expansive as the super mario games.

i honestly thought forza 4's lego speed champions was great lol.
I've been playing Lego Racers 2, and it's a mess compared to the first game. It is way too hard and slippery when driving, the powerups are not interesting or fun and are basically useless when you're winning or the ai goes way faster than you and gets away like why, and the ai just cheats over and over again, so it makes the game unfun. I do like the gibberish voices and the feel of the worlds even though they are empty by today's standards
