    Actually the most traditional breakfast varies with locations.
    This video covered a general kind of breakfast everywhere in Taiwan.
    but if you want to try different breakfast, go south.
    Like Middle of Taiwan eat fried noodle as breakfast
    South taiwan eat Beef Broth Soup and lots of awesome seafood stuff.

    You are right by my hometown! I grew up in 永和市! I love Taiwanese breakfast!! I so miss it since I left. I haven't found an authentic Taiwanese breakfast place in the U.S. I loved drinking sweet soy milk cold especially during a hot humid day. The Chinese Fried Dough (doughnut) is soooo good!! I remember bringing a Savory Rice Role to school for breakfast/lunch. It was the best! You have to have Chinese Fried Dough in the Rice Roll!! 😄 Flakey Egg Pancake is awesome! Dough & Egg my favs!! I am so hungry now! I miss my hometown!!!

    I went to this place every morning the last time I visited my family in Taiwan. My parents rented an AirBnB down the street from here.
    Every morning I would get a bowl of beef noodle soup, potstickers, and soup dumplings and cold soy milk. It costed me $5.00 USD.

    The “soup dumpling” that you ordered is actually not soup dumplings. In Taiwan there’s xiaolongbao and tangbao (literally translates to “soup” dumplings), two different things. The xiaolongbao is meant to be more doughy with less soup that you can eat on the go in baggies. I’ve had amazing xiaolongbao in Taiwan before. If you want to get a taste of actual soup dumplings in Taiwan, Ding Tai Feng is the place to be.

      Jing Ren to me it looks sort of curdled like if saw milk like that over here it would instantly get thrown in the bin, so how is this different? just curious lol

    • @eggtoast
      @eggtoast 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's the type of bacteria in it. Savory soy milk is fresh but it sort of separates and stuff because of its chemical reaction with the vinegar. They put vinegar in, along with pickled veggies also made with vinegar. That's what causes the texture. Soy milk that curdles results, don't quote me, but probably from some sort of bacteria colony and stuff, as with most food that start to go bad.

    Maybe it's cuz I'm Taiwanese, but I love soup dumplings doughy. Also, the fried dough. It's called 油条 right? I'm not an expert on food, but shouldn't a food with the word "oil" in it be oily? I like them light anyways, but I was always curious.

    • @cm3655
      @cm3655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ??? It is deep fried and the inside of the stick is almost airy that there isn't much surface area to absorb the oil. The outer layer is oiliest but they usually let it sit to drip oil off before serving and becomes hard and impenetrable. If u look inside one, maybe it makes more sense.

    • @jesswu6821
      @jesswu6821 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it’s called 油條.... but I’m questioning the 條 part cuz that’s simplified Chinese and most people in Taiwan write in traditional.... just saying ...not trying to offend you or anything

  • @03x02

    Yes, egg pancake, rice ball, soy milk, and fried dough are in the Taiwanese breakfast cuisine, but it's not "traditional taiwanese". The way you're eating or being served is basically a "modern" northern taiwan breakfast brought from china after WWII. Thus a traditional chinese breakfast. A traditional taiwanese breakfast would be bawan, oyster vermicelli, wagui, gua bao, oyster omlette, fish/meat ball soup, mugwort dumpling etc., served not just with soymilk, but an option for rice milk, peanut milk, milk tea. Or, if it's fried dough, you would eat it with a crusty bread, and not put it in the soymilk. And you need to go eat in places where there are big hokkien and hakka communities in Taiwan, not just in a community influenced by the mainlanders. I know because I'm half minnan and hakka. My ancestors were from Taiwan since the 1600's.

    • @eggtoast
      @eggtoast 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I personally like all kinds of Taiwanese breakfast, commercialized Taipei and otherwise, but there are definitely differences. My dad's side of the family is from Chiayi, and while not ethnically indigenous, they've definitely been in Taiwan since a long time, like before the 1900s. The breakfast there is definitely very different. But all good. It's all good to me.

    In the savory version of the soy milk, they normally add some vinegar and pickled vegetables so the acidity of those two things causes the soy milk to coagulate and thats why it's chunky unlike the sweet kind, which is more smooth.

    Wait dude, have you never been to Ding Tai Feng in Taipei? Go to the original near Yong Kang Street! They're the most famous soup dumpling place and they have the thinnest dumpling skin but it doesn't break. It's the only place I go to eat soup dumplings and is the first place I think about when people say Taiwanese soup dumpling! Also where do you go in New York to eat soup dumpling with thin skin? I've been scared to try any place because Ding Tai Feng is so good, my expectations are too high. Someone took me to Joe's Shanghai and the skin on THOSE are thick! I haven't wanted to try any places here for fear I'll get let down, but if you know a place with thin skin soup dumplings I wanna go.

    I use soy milk because I'm allergic to animal milks, but the texture of the savoury hot soy milk nope, couldn't do it . It looked like curdled cow milk, don't think I could be convinced lol but the Chinese bread stick things look yum. .

      Sweet Peas If you live in the West, the soy milk you are drinking is absolutely different from the East soy milk. So...it is understandable for a savory soy milk cause it is just like having more liquidity tofu dish

    I don't care for American Chinese food so I kinda stayed away from Asian food, but always watching you and Dan talk about Asian foods makes me want to try it all! I love that I found this channel along with your other one!

    I was so born into the wrong culture... everything you're showing is something I love and everything about American food is so less appealing.

    • @ruedelta
      @ruedelta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Chinese American communities are trying to bring that stuff over here, so don't fret, it'll come eventually. When you're in China long enough, sometimes you miss not having the many things that America has (Latino food, other European cuisines, even chili dogs). The grass is always greener on the other side.

      You gotta know where to look. A lot of these types of places are small, and unadvertised so you gotta have friends that will take you there. I live here in the States (Colorado), and there's two places that are extremely good but my friends have never heard of them and we've all lived here all our lives. I promised to take them one day. So go find an Asian friend, lol.

      Pythia Sibyls as an Asian, I love eating other food but TBH Asian food is always my favorite from every Asian country. When I eat American food or Latin .. even European is heavy feeling and it's always high in calorie and I always feel fatigued after or I feel like I'm gonna get more obese or have diabetes Bc everything is either too salty or sweet. Be when I eat Asian food I'm full for a cheap price and I go about my day without feeling sluggish! One of my close friends is Haitian and he literally eats only Asian food lol and it's not Bc of me

    You just brought back some wonderful memories for me! Ate breakfast at that very same restaurant many times. The best memory was when a friend and I that both lived in YungHo went up Yang Ming Shan to watch a meteor shower, and got back to town right around dawn, absolutely starving. Everything looked (and smelled) so good, we were tempted to order the whole menu! Did you try the chive buns? One of my favorites. Gah, now I'm getting homesick for Taiwan again...
