I only read a few comments, and it is amazing how misinformed and paranoid people are.
There are comments saying TH-cam rather to promote bad content instead of good ones.
There are comments saying that this video teach us nothing.
But actually, this video is telling us only one thing: to keep our content with the better quality as we can, don't matter how long it takes.

I'm a daily vlogger for now, and recently I decided to keep my vlogs short. I tested one out yesterday (below 3 minutes and 30 seconds), and boy was I shocked to finally see a video that didn't have any sort of people quitting way too early on!
You know what's more satisfying than a 20 mins length? Check this out - you've gotta know what ya up against for your channel. Trying to beat the TH-cam algorithm can get you more subs, like, comments, etc. you know who you are and what you are here for.

This video completely met my expectations on how informative it would be. I had very low expectations.
I use to make 10-15 minute videos about 2x a week. My audience kept asking for longer videos so I started making 20-30 minute long videos. Trouble is, longer videos take longer to produce so then they get mad that they're not getting 2 videos per week. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. There's no satisfying everybody. Whatever your length of video is, the most important thing is to stay consistent. I tried going back to shorter videos and that pissed them off! Your audience gets use to certain lengths so stick within a very specific time frame. I learned this the hard way.
Why you didn't even mention that a video must be over 8 minutes so that a creator can have 3 ads instead of 2!? That's quite important information for creators.

I watched this video 2 months ago, at that time everyone around me was talking about "shorter is better" and I was working on a documentary !!the word you said it "it depends on how your topic takes" made a big difference in my believing system.
I kept going, guess what?! the video that made me hit the 1000 sub and 4000 hrs was 15 min and it was documentary!

Translation: We don't want to tell you how the algorithm works because we don't want creators to game it. We do favour videos based on time but we can't reveal specifics or it will decrease the effectiveness of the algorithm to distinguish quality content from dross

He actually knows it very well. They just don't expose every single ranking factor and how it works, cuz that would be abused.

I'm starting to make longer videos partially because I would rather watch longer videos myself and also partially because I enjoy making longer videos more than shorter videos. There was a time when I preferred making shorter videos. I don't think it matters. It matters doing what you are passionate about. Follow your dreams.

No. There’s a reason why feature films, episodes, and songs are a certain length. Those lengths represent the average viewer / listener’s attention span. Keep your vids under ten minutes for most content. The average video length is around 10-11 minutes for this reason.

Yes, I think the point is in this sentence: "If it takes 2 minutes to communicate what you want to say, make a 2 minutes video, if it takes 20 minutes, make it 20 minutes".
After the changes in algorithm around 2018, my channel and many others started dying. I had been getting much more views and constantly progressing until 2017, although having significantly fewer subs then. Currently almost all views of my new videos come from external sites or search engine. I get almost nothing from main page or suggested videos. Even next to my own videos, the suggested ones are not from my channel (although they are related to each other). My videos are found valuable by viewers, as they are often shared externally and are always positively received. Unfortunately TH-cam keeps hiding them and showing boring, much worse and prolonged videos of the same topic instead. Very demotivating for a creator to be treated like this after 9 years of uploading...
Thank you for confirming what I thought. Focus on content quality and not video length. Plus TH-cam is focusing heavily on Shorts now. Therefore, short and spicy could lead to great rewards in the future

I am happy with this, I make One Minute Videos and people kept pressing me that was a mistake. But I like to be unique and my one-minute videos are unedited and show what I want to show, to people so they can make up their own minds about daily life int the countries I visit. I dislike making longer videos< i do it sometimes, but I feel I step way out of my comfort zone and that shows. Thanks for reassuring me that it does not only depend on video length.

"Run time should match the content" is a great statement that I just wrote down. That helps me not worry as much about trying to cram too much in too quickly.

Great points, Cristos. We feel like when a creator is passionate about what they are creating, the audience who also shares that passion will watch that creator's videos. It's good to hear that we're on the right track as our viewership is consistently on the rise. Albeit, we aren't mega creators like some of the channels that have been around for ages, but it's cool to connect with people all over the world who are commenting, liking and sharing our content.

Often viewers, myself included are satisfied watching just 1 minute videos. I mean instagram and youtube shorts is just about that. Often I even prefer them because long videos, atleats 1/3rd of the time is absolute waste, sometimes more. So satisfaction can't be measured by the length of a video

This is a creator preference in my opinion. Rule #1 - Create videos that you’d watch. Because at the end of the day, you have to be satisfied with the finished product. Your audience will find you and follow you.

I have MANY animated videos that are 30 seconds to 1 minute in length that have excellent retention and CTR. Some even have greater than 100% retention due to viewers replaying parts of the video. In addition, these videos often have good engagement values otherwise... as in comments and likes. However, the algorithm will still not pick up on this content. Why? because it's completely random.
We've all seen the terrible, low-quality garbage content that will be mass suggested to everyone, regardless of if it's even applicable. We've also all seen the amazing, high-quality content that is never promoted by TH-cam. Now, I'm not saying my content is amazing or super high quality... If anything, my content probably falls closer to the garbage category... but I know for sure that the algorithm does not choose videos based on any factors that actually make sense. Because if it made sense, then that would mean it relies on logic. And if it relies on logic, then it could be exploited. Literally, the only way to ensure the algorithm cannot be exploited is to have it be completely random.
So, if anything, the best advice is to just keep creating content, have fun doing it and always try to improve. Because each video you produce increases your odds of being picked up by the algorithm. And if you finally have a video promoted to a mass audience, then, of course, you want it to be something that will cause people to actually subscribe and watch more.
TH-cam isn't stupid... They just think we are.

That definitely helps put it in perspective. And although it's hard as a creator to be successful these days. I do like the fact that the algorithm is skewing in the audience's satisfaction direction. I just wish that the notification system would be different. As in having the subscribe button really mean something again. But just my take. Thanks :)

I learned this in high school English class when a fellow student asked how long a term paper should be. You know students look to hit a word count... Mr Smith's answer: "As long as it takes to explore the content." Now, being concise, punchy and satisfying is key to the content as well...
Hey Shootdahoops, your basketball shooting is really pro - Love the graphics. Have you considered adding your own commentary to accompany the gameplay - my son who plays basketball at school but lacks strategy and game knowledge (and kids like him all around the world) could really learn from watching game videos with an education focus.
This was a question I had in mind for long. And it is great that TH-cam has decided to create such a video.
Another doubt I have been trying to find an answer for is this: "Does TH-cam care about the number of videos/combined size of all videos in the channel? Say, that a particular channel has 50 videos. Would such a channel receive greater push and higher ranking as per TH-cam's Algorithm?
Hard to say, but it looks like you mean a snowball effect. The more videos you have, the more likely some of them will be recommended. Seems logical.
Well, Even I have this doubt, I put 1 video per day , I am in TH-cam over 3 1/2 years now. I have around 1150+ videos already. But sincerely I don't think more the video the TH-cam's Algorithm helps.
If you leave a bread crumb trail, or promote your own videos in your videos... you will help the audience, and the algorithm find you again, and again. It's ok to ask for a like, subscribe, and another view in every video.👍👍

This was a great video. It helped me to understand what the algorithm is and how long my videos should be. As a new content creator it's helpful for me to learn as much as I can to be successful on TH-cam!
Yeah me too, so it's depends on our target
I'd say it depends on the video. For example, say I were to play Sonic the Hedgehog or some other platformer. I TRY to aim for my video after editing and everything to be between 12 and 20 minutes. Playing a video game with a stronger story I'd try to aim for a longer video. For example, my Little Misfortune video I recently uploaded is roughly an hour long due to the nature of the game as it is a click and point. If I were to make all shorter videos of the game my viewers nor I would get to a satisfactory amount of the story's progression and it would take MUCH longer to finish.
I have applied it in the latest vidio-vidio which is solid and clear. And proved many watching. Thank you mr🙏🙏👍👍❤❤❤

When YT began, they had "most recent uploads" page as the front page/home page of TH-cam. Any video that had an interesting thumbnail or title got hundreds, even thousands of views at that time. Then they removed that page, presumably in order to leave people to chase the dream for the rest of eternity and get us desperate enough to watch videos like this. It was "you" tube, now it's us jumping through hoops in the hope of meeting the requirements of them tube.
The only constant is the rules are always changing! LOL

Without realizing it and without knowing why the LORD led me this way. I have done exactly what you just said about length. Times it took 2 minutes and times it took 40 minutes. I did exactly that. Whatever it took to bring the message that the LORD gave me.
