This will be the real competitor to the new mini, similar battery, similar charging performance. Looking forward to the R5 range test and Bjorns thought's on that one. Plus there's room in the back row afaik.
@@themole85 In earlier tests Bjørn has had the Ioniq 28kWh at 156Wh/km at 90 when the conditions where wet, and -3 celcius. It would probably ever so slightly beat the M3 referenced in the video at 19:11, but not by much. This mini is efficient, but his title is just bad click bait, but let's not get ahead of ourselves :D
Mini’s price and styling changes have finally killed my nostalgia for owning one since my first car was a classic mini 30 years ago. Even had 2 of the new BMW minis when they came out in the 2000’s. This thing has no soul. And I feel the nostalgia factor is what would have convinced me to me to overlook the shortcomings compared to a Model 3 or similar.
I prefer kWh/100km, because I pay my energy usually in kWh as a unit - and it is easier to compare with ICE consumption. Good it is configurable in this car for others who prefer Wh/km. For purists or physicists they should also provide J/m or maybe even BTU/mile for our British friends.
it's just a "function" from fossil times, if you are driving it shows litre/100km and when the car comes to stand it shows litre/hour - all german cars do this and it works. but now in an electric car, it is stupid and mathematical wrong, kWh/h is just kW - this is power and not consumption
@@cap0815 No, "kWh/h" is not mathematically wrong. It is a unit of power. Furthermore, the above comment is only about units of energy consumption and gives a reason to prefer "kWh".
07:00 usb stick? I've notice that many new cars don't have that option for music. more usb ports but just for power and I miss having that but it's rarely mention in reviews or opinions on new cars
As the former owner of a classic mini, I am well aware of the range anxiety and lack of heating the models have. At least now the anxiety is about "will the battery last" rather than "will the vehicle last?" . I feel that I have been vaccinated against ever wanted to get inside a mini let alone owning one.
in germany a convoy is like one large vehicle. Of course you can't drive "between" one big car. And so the last car of a convoy can cross a red light even if it turned red minutes ago. It's like one looooooooong car.
I have been waiting for the test of the J01 with the wonderful detailed Bjorn. Thank you. Its confirmed what I thought - that BMW messed up the engineering to have added so much weight for a so called dedicated EV platform vs the F56. The weight impacts everything so why didnt they use the F56 as the reference and minimise any KG creep. The efficiency is worse than F56. The styling has a clean look from the front but fussy from rear. Perhaps the first LCI (when the production starts in the UK) will fix the usability aspects of heating/charging/cooling. The seats look cheap and fussy. I noticed that the J01 has a super solid feel when the door is shut vs F56 so perhaps the extra weight is on better crash protection - lack of info from Mini as how/why so heavy and the excuse of larger battery is poor as cells from 2019 should be lighter per kw. Perhaps a early summer test with summer tyres will redeem the J01 a bit?
Being the owner of the previous generation Cooper SE, I feel the same. Mini added quite an amount of weight to the J01, sure the battery is larger, but if we take a look at the brand new Renault 5 with a similar sized battery and overall very comparable dimensions, the French car is a lot lighter than the Mini. Personally I would consider myself a Mini fan, with the F56 Cooper SE being my second Mini, but somehow the J01 doesn't really spark too much interest, the exterior styling, especially at the rear end looks a bit weird and I am not really sold on the interior either. To be honest I'd rather buy the Renault 5 over the new Mini Cooper E/SE, even though it has less performance, I think the former is better designed and more thought out than the latter.
The weight increase from the old model a bummer. As we need to pay taxes based on car weight starting from next year in the netherlands... and EV's are heavy.
One thing has to be clarified with regard to the HUD. All MINIs have this type of HUD because their windshields are not tilted enough for the projection to work! The plastic screen is a choice based on physics rather than cost.
Bjorn must have had a very bad experience driving around here in Belgium. It's always top of his mind if he thinks of bad roads 😅. I blame the international traffic north-south flying by 🙃
@@benjimc1 Exactly. I don't experience it as such on motorways, although some sections can use some maintenance. Let's say road surface is better than charging infrastructure
Well this summer I did a roadtrip through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg and boy oh boy, was it a contrast in road quality (on "B roads", not motorways) crossing the border from the Netherlands to Belgium.
I love that you can choose how the consumption is displayed. Just because Tesla was first and displays Wh/km doesn't mean it's the only correct way. I agree 100% that kWh/100km is idiotic, but personally km/kWh would also make sense similar to Wh/km, it's all down to what people prefer in the end
German here, we actully do learn. Showing "consumption / km" doesn't make sense while standing still. Also that's why petrol cars usually switch to "liters per hour" when you're not moving.
kWh per hour is still redundant if you are trying to show real time consumption. 1kW instead of "1 kWh per hour" would be enough to tell you real time consumption. Back to school.
@@zedski it just doesn’t matter… Same unit but basically different way of showing power… And the average driver probably isn’t aware that 1 kW is equal to 1 kWh/h… but 1 kWh/h is more understandable when you’re coming from ICEs.
@@zedski I know man… I have studied electrical engineering. So kWh/h = kW and therefore exactly the same unit in mathematical terms. Now it only comes to your preferred way of displaying the power value.

..how to put your dinner plate or frisbee in the middle of dashboard.. realy ugly, is going to be a great failure, and is was filmed close, zoom out it will look way worst.. very good review
This is because the original minis had a circular display and they want to remember it. What they forget is that the original mini only had a limited number of things to display: speed, lights on, full beam lights, fuel left and "the orange light". What did the orange light indicate? I never quite worked out except it meant "trouble". There is a lot more trying to be displayed now and a round display is not the best way to do it. Except maybe for maps actually. But you could do that on a square display, leaving space round the edges for important things like an orange light
In the summer we managed 133wh/100km while not trying to get any efficiency out of it, just fun driving. Great range
