I’ve been working on a startup these past couple years. Prior to that I loved being able to take a big international trip every year or so but lately I haven’t been able to make it happen because worries about money and needing to take off >1 week to do it. Feel like if I did go, I might just be worrying most of the time.
But I still have tried to plan for small breaks I’m comfortable with (day trips, weekend trips, etc). You’re right that there’s a different weight to carry when deciding to make time for yourself as a self employed person.

I get what you're saying about people wish they had your job. So many people who took my adult classes used to say "you have the best job! It must be so fun to teach dance all the time." It really wasn't 🤣

the illusion of paid vacation leave at work is a funny one, all they do is pay you a little less than your actual salary each month, the employeer set that money aside to earn interest on it (for them), and then give it to you as you take days off for vacation ;)
As a freelancer, if one wants 2000 usd to take a vacation for one sets aside 10 usd each working day (261 days a year) on a «secret» account, and in a year one has saved up 2000 for a vacation, if one wants more one sets aside more money pr day.
If one can’t find little things to not spend money on each day to save that 10 usd pr day one has to charge customers a tiny bit more pr day/project to be able to set that money aside.

The whole PTO thing makes me think about how I can't freaking wait to retire. But then again, when I retire, I'd probably start my own business lol

You should turn your phone off for a week but still make videos (post them later on), so a vacation from your phone and youtube visually (without taking a vacation from work itself). Why? because it is unusual, contrarian to "normal" burnout philosophy and it satisfies a work goal of creating inciteful content (you will post about your experience in future videos) all the while not losing income.
I understand you need a phone for work when you are an independent contractor doing freelance work, but typically we can do this with a computer (whatsapp, zoom, emails all still accessible... just not the handheld death scroll machine). Just food for thought. The others who have posted have good insights also. You do you.
Good luck Wayne. You do not need it but I wish you the best of luck regardless :)

Well I work for a company but there is no redundancy here so I haven’t taken a vacation in years. Oh well, grin and bear it.
