Candyrat is probably the most progressiveimpressive acoustic guitar label out there, and of all the stellar talent represented there, I think Mike Dawes is totally first call. He's a modern fingerstylist, but not one of those who cops all the usual rhythms, flicks, thwapps, plings that distinguish this breed of guitar playing. There are a lot of imitators, but very few real visionaries, and Mike is one of the best. Mike is constantly surprising. He's so fluid-dynamic, in the pocket, and he takes these hairpin turns like a hummingbird- all while keeping the musical dialog insanely witty. The guy is preternaturally adept!
Mike incorporates fingerpicking, slapping, harmonics, hammer-ons, pull-offs, even playing above the nut. :) I think that only a guitar player can really appreciate what he is doing. What do you think?

Man this just brought tears to my eyes! Minutes ago I just bought tickets to see Mike Dawes at Swallow Hill Music Hall January 30th 2024. I hope to see some of you there! They appreciate musical talent at Swallow Hill!

And then comes a guy named Mike Dawes, who played this song exactly the same as the band, and also upgraded it to another level.... and i have to say that this cover is the best of the best, till now. 1 guy, 1 guitar, 3 instrument voices.. Most of the music and guitar playing in this percussive/harmonics/tapping genre is pretty neat to watch. But for me, a lot of it gets considerably less compelling if I'm just listening and not watching the guitarist. Some of it actually moves all the way into irritating, like listening to a really loud clock ticking. Mike Dawes is one of the few artists in this style whose music I'll actually listen to in the car and on my phone rather than a single youtube viewing when I feel like practicing this kind of stuff on the guitar and I'm clicking on random Candyrat videos. Other than Erik Mongraine, I think Mike Dawes is the only other acoustic virtuoso whose music I still listen to since hearing them for first time. Kinda like Tool, I still listen to them and hope for new music but I haven't listened to a Chevelle or Ten Years or Deftones song in, well...like ten years.
Men at Work got sued because apparently their flute solo sounded like "Kookaburra sits in the old gumtree" (which it hardly did) and the flute player died shortly after due to stress. They ended up paying millions as it sounded similar to a child rhyme exactly like this. Thats fucked, and yet this is a song incredibly similar to those tunes...
Sorrowfull Blinger Ba ba black sheep and twinkle twinkle little star use essentially the same melody which comes from a french song Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman.
