That's actually a really good skill to know regardless of context. My sister had to apply it the other day during a medical emergency. Now imagine if a little kid had an emergency but there were no adults around.

Frankly, without a threat of a thus far rare mass shooter or even single shooter incident, first aid should be taught in schools and not basic bandaid nonsense, but for when you are confronted with a real world serious injury. Rather than standing there gawking as someone preventably bleeds to death from what otherwise was a survivable injury.

I'm a kindergarten teacher and I have gone through this training after school with all staff members at my school. It was upsetting but I'm glad all elementary staff at my school know what to do. It's not a training I would want my kindergarteners going through- focus should instead be on teaching adults in schools and older kids who are interested.
Respectfully, how does that help a child when the shooting happens at home? A majority of the child firearm deaths happen in the home (usually accidental).
No, everyone capable of learning basic first aid should be taught it. I remember one case where an 8 year old kid clunked his head, bled out an entire unit of blood while he and his friend wandered looking for help, nearly died before someone directed them to the fire department.
He'd not have required hospitalization had basic first aid and say, his shirt used as an improvised bandage.

Prior to the 20th century, the average kid had basic survival skills, like lighting fires and hunting small game, that could keep them alive. In addition, while only a small percentage of kids will actually be part of a mass shooting, far many WILL AT SOME POINT BE INVOLVED IN A CAR OR OTHER INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENT!!! I live in a blue sanctuary city and we're not allowed to have firearms because of our gun free zones. I bought an air horn and a can of mace to protect my family.
All these kids are sooo traumatized by their own parents and the choices they make as citizens of this country.

I'm absolutely no lover of the modern NRA, I prefer them from before the hostile industry takeover that was a response to NRA support of the Gun Control Act of 1968.
But, there are quite a few laws already on the books that enforce gun control that go ill to unenforced. An unenforced law is no law at all. We also do need laws requiring responsible firearm storage and for crying out loud, a small secure handgun storage container starts at around $30.00. Locks come with the firearms now, use the damned things and don't store the boom-boom bang bangs with their bullet launchers.
This isn't complicated, but apparently we do need laws that are enforced that mandate just those things. And you don't give a minor child a loaded firearm to store in their bedroom. You also don't give them a Formula One race car, so try using a touch of common goddamned sense.

Impressive! Bravo Kate Carlton!!! These lessons can be useful to save someone’s life as a result of multiple injuries. That said, as a Canadian, I’m thankful that guns aren’t part of culture. Hence, there are far fewer firearms per capita in our country.
I had NO idea that 'packing a wound' was a normal thing to do for trauma. I mean. What if you're not suppose to pack it? In real life, sometimes you 'pack' and sometimes you leave something unpacked. You know? Maybe you should mention that once you 'know' how to pack, it better than to watch bleed. That. Some reservoir of innate wisdom will come out of you. 'Pack' a wound defy the 'sanctity' of the body, for many. Although. If I a 5 year old learn about this, I would gravitate toward medicine.
It ain't like we couldn't use more folks involved in medicine, however in this country there's very little motivation to do so for the right reasons.
Packing a wound is for the ED, not the field. Even military medics didn't pack wounds, we applied pressure dressings and tourniquets. As medics, we also could start an IV, but MEDEVAC birds started coming with blood, which beats saline solution hands down.

Kids at that age do not have the mental fortitude to handle such a traumatic situation, especially during an active shooting.

The more people with the ability to help the better, during an emergency situations every second counts.
Applying pressure to a wound is not the same thing as CPR and they're not learning how to be paramedics.

Odd that the military never trained us to pack bullet wounds. That was for doctor at a collection point or field hospital. We'd apply pressure dressings and tourniquets and when appropriate, start a normal saline IV. We'd split fractures, just like we trained infantry to split fractures and apply the same tourniquets and dressings. We would perform advance airway management, but then we were medics.
Just blindly jamming a rag into a wound opens the wound more and potentially dislodges clots and possibly fragments.
This is why basic first aid has an established curricula and this sure as hell isn't it, what was shown is nothing short of malpractice.

Shit, that’s dangerous. Every day trained nurses make mistakes that put peoples lives in danger. The last thing we need is a generation of people that thinks that it knows what they do while in reality have no idea.
Gotta disband Boy and Girl Scouts then, they teach basic first aid. Gotta go back to third world watching friends bleed to death from playground injuries because an adult that's equally clueless isn't around to gawk at their dying ass, like Gawd intended!

We cannot lose side of the fact that the school shootings happened in, Gun Free Zones. if we take a serious look at the location of most mass shootings in the USA we will see that they have occurred in gun free zones. These gun free zones could include schools, college campuses, grocery stores, movie, theaters, shopping centers, or any other place with the gun, free zone decal or sign on their property.
Most recently a mass shooting occurred in Russia, which has strict and draconian firearms control. We are also seeing numerous mass stabbings in which knives have been used. Rather than focus on guns, we need to focus on violence that is spreading around the world.
These kids can help the knife wounds, saw wounds, etc etc etc
America is deeply divided between between the poorly educated and us who are educated and intelligent.

That we HAVE to teach this to children because of schools getting shot up is the unthinkable part. With that being said I taught my children ditch medicine at a very early age, we surfed, snowboarder and skatboarded in very remote locations. They each had a knapsack with a small first aide kit.

All this won't be necessary if we modify the Second Amendment to limit gun access to individuals. The Second Amendment doesn’t even say that individuals can own guns; the Supreme Court changed its interpretation in 2008, allowing individuals unregulated access to and owning guns. The original inent was a national guard rather than a gathering of an army of farmers and crafters.
