sound guy here. Thanks for mentioning how when things are going smoothly, nobody notices us. Most of us tech guys get a rush when the show's going really well. Even when we don't know the band/artist, we're your biggest fans in that moment. Some of us joke our best compliment is when nobody notices anything, but I'd be lying to tell you we don't enjoy a "thanks" now and then.

I only play in my church worship band, but I relate so much to things that you say happen in this video. Things like strumming your guitar and hearing sound, and that relief that it's actually making sound at all. Also, wanting to do something in a song, but chickening out. I've done that 1000x because I'm terrible at improv (and really, guitar too) and I always will err towards making the song sound right versus doing something flashy or cool. It's church, 99% of the audience won't notice anyways.

I bet it's pretty therapeutic to run through the night like that. @The-Art-of-Guitar Back in the 80s we had "that happen" at least once at every show & practice. So thousands of times! Heck we even had a girl's hair get stuck in a guy's nose ring at a great friend's funeral. It took us/me over 20 minutes to fix. & i mostly got stuck being the unstucker, lol! Yet twas a great tension breaker that was desperately needed.
It became one of the most told repetitive stories, especially at most funerals that followed, which sadly has been many; well over a hundred in the 80s & like another 100 over the following 30+ Years. Still it's funny how stories like that can live on & actually become cherished, As your story was once again a reminder of... Cheers 🤘
PS- We could help Rob Reiner do a whole Spinal Tap series! So many great could-be clips from 80s antics & beyond! Send it to The Netflix! Okay, bad puns- pss- after show late meals are great payments/thanks!
Cheers, Mike & all- Keep the stories coming~

I have an EVH with a D-Tuna. The band I'm in played a Pearl Jam tribute show in my area, and one of the songs we did was Just Breathe. The song before was Even Flow. I had my D-Tuna pulled out for Even Flow and started playing Just Breathe. Yeah... so the sinking feeling when someone is in a different tuning...I know it.

We were a 5-piece...lost our rhythm guitarist to rehab and our vocalist to getting fired...so, we were a 3-piece and had permission to to practice at a nightclub...ummm, bar...after 5pm, the Marines would show up...not for killing us, but to have some beers...so they were there during our practice...we, as cool as we were , asked what they wanted to hear...at the time, it was all about Ozzy...my guitarist said we can play Ozzy, but not sing it (we fired him)...they said okay...we kicked into "Paranoid" and it was cool...they loved it...then history changed...I turned my mic on and started singing...as soon as I did, the drummer and lead/guitarist lost their place; they were taken aback!!! I nailed it!
    The whole bar was ecstatic!!!
Then, my guitarist asked if I could sing "Crazy Train"...? Yeah, I can, but not with not with that bass line!

How did you know that? I thought the notes sounded the same on any tuning if correctly done. Does it mean my notes sound flatter the lower my tuning is? I'd like to know more about it.

    Cool story about Flip...
Many years ago when I was younger and married at the time. We are not together anymore but this is one of the good memories I have with her.
It was the wife's birthday and we were at our local pawn shop where we were regulars.
One of the employees came walking in and said there was this band playing down at our local music/clothing/head shop. So we decided to go check it put.
We walked in and were just blown away. It was a small shop so Flip was In a small corner of the store and there were about 20 people watching so it was standing room only. Me and the wife managed to make our way so we standing right in front of the band. There rocking away and all of a sudden Brin takes his guitar and puts it around my neck hands Me his pick and starts just running around the store. I tried my best to keep up with them but me being young and haven't played guitar for very long I was lost.
Brin comes running back up to the stage area carrying a vinyl record can't remeber the band it might have been theirs but that's besides the point. He finishes the last verse of the song and the song ends. They all hand me picks and say good job. I'm high on adrenaline and grinning ear to ear.
Here's the kicker Cheap Trick was playing in town that night and Flip was the opening act. I was standing next to the guitarist and I told him it was my wife's birthday and asked him if they could get us into the show. He immediatly turns around and gets on the mic and says "So this guy says it's his wife's birthday and asked me to get him into the show tonight" my face is turning red and I feel my heart beating in my chest as I think I'm about to be laughed at, "I'll get you in but you have to answer a trivia question first...Who is the boss of Charlie's Angels" I froze and stuttered thinking to myself I know this but the answer wouldn't come out my mouth. I look at my wife and she's smiling ear to ear I look around at the other guests and they are all smiling and laughing. I'm crushed as I think I'm about to suffer the ultimate embarrassment and fail out when suddenly the guitarist says "Here's a hint it's in the name"
Face palm and a groan as I yell out "Charlie".Everybody laughed pretty hard as well as did I.
We got to see the show and it was an awesome night. Flip was phenomenal as well as was Cheap Trick. It was an amazing birthday for the wife and we had a good time all around.

Never give up your tubes. It's so heartbreaking that so many use computer simulation amp modelers now, but there is no substitute, When I play through my Peavey or a Mesa or a 5150, the tones that you can generate makes me think that amp modeler users don't really love the guitar. That was one of the coolest things about the electric guitar - it's not just the music, it's the way it sounds. I remember when I started and heard Brain May, Randy, all of them if it just made the hairs on my body stay on end. But man, you use a bass amp head? Is that for guitar? I'm sure it sounds good and I've heard of people doing it, but if you use that, I'll have to try one. My Peavey triple XXX though is absolute perfection.

    • @Scott__C
      @Scott__C หลายเดือนก่อน

Eh, I still have a couple amps, but I use modelers mostly now. It's easier to get tones and more consistent. Two things most folks neglect when using them: they make their sounds at low volume, then are surprised if they're different when they're louder and don't use any or not enough high end rolloff.

2:27 Sick chorus setting! Over the years, I've heard so many non-famous guitarists getting horrible sounds out their chorus pedals, it always excites me when someone gets it right.
I respect and admire you from watching your vids over the past couple of years. I would love to pick your brain a little bit about amp setups: I don't like stacks aimed at my back but prefer combo amps aimed up from the front of me like a vocal monitor. Have you seen other guitarists do this, or am I a weirdo?

Great story!! I've played a lot of benefits with local bands, and they're fun. I always made sure to practice their material plus mine, because we'd always invite each other up for guest jams. It freaked them out because sometimes they'd say "Wow, you know that too??" It would blow their mind more if they had original stuff - but sometimes I'd have to improvise that. And I always jumped in on rhythm - never lead, unless the guitar player said "Dude, take the lead here." I never wanted to be THAT guy.
Wow - Steelheart! I remember them, and all the stories about the the vocalist. I heard there were betting tables at every show, and how high he'd hit. Could be a rumor......lol

Saw Queen of the Ryche in Pittsburgh back in February! They rocked! No Silent Lucidity though which was kinda funny!

I think that was a different one. This one’s out of Minnesota and the lead singer for it and gosh, I don’t remember playing out east but I sure love to.

It was Empire, another female fronted Queensryche tribute band. Who knew there there this many!

Man, I felt the same way a couple weeks back when we were playing with Little Texas. Here I am toting around my Rectoverb and a 4x12 cab and they're just rockin' Nuerual stuff (and sounded badass). I have a Headrush, but I've yet to pull the trigger on going fully digital while playing live.

I had a female singer in my band once, who used to do that to my head, whenever she hit a specific high note. I would feel myself almost blacking out, every time she hit it.
