So my brother (who was 7 years older) was reading the Dragonlance Chronicles and I asked if I could read them (I was like 9 or 10)? He gave me The Hobbit and said if I could finish that book who would let me read Dragonlance. So I devoured the Hobbit and I was given the trilogy. After just 3-4 chapters I was hooked. I devoured at the age of 10 the whole 390 page novel in like a week or two. This begun my unquenchable reading habit. I was reading adult size novels in 4th grade. I can not tell you how money books I have read in the last 35-40 years since but the Dragonlance books are still my favorite. There are now 9 core books for the series and I read them every 2-3 years.

It's been so long since I've been able to make time to watch/listen to The Dungeoncast and - while I have a lot of catching up to do - it is an absolute delight to be back. It genuinely feels like coming home.
I'm only so far into the episode and I never seem to be able to edit my comments, so I'll just say now, it's thoroughly enjoyable so far, I'm really excited for this topic.

So the way casting spells affected wizards in Dragonlance is just how magic worked in D&D before 3rd Edition. If you wanted to be able to cast Fireball three times, you technically had to memorize it three times, and that took up three spell slots. It was rough. Which is probably why I never played with anyone who used these rules. I feel like that wasn't exactly a rare situation, which is probably what led to the current paradigm.

Dragonlance was my gateway into D&D back in middle school in the early 90's. Lots of getting my Dragonlance novels and MTG cards confiscated by teachers for bringing that "cult stuff" to school (it was the best of times, it was the worst of times). I read all the novels I could get my hands on up to Dragons of Summer Flame, which really was kind of an ending point, and was conveniently around the time I graduated from high school. I noticed that new novels were coming out in the setting past Summer Flame, but I was never really interested.
If the events from Autumn Twilight to Summer Flame were Dragonlance Z, then the later novels were Dragonlance GT.

Dash any plans you had for next year! It is of the Kender now. By accident of course. Don’t know how it happen. It must have just wanted to be that way.
Seriously though, I played a Kender; Wellis Tinkernil friend to a Dwarf, finder of keys, see’er of a dragon, unexpected collector of critters, first to walk through a doorway, finder of the most interesting things in my pouches, etc. To this day he is my favorite character I have played.

Bionicle was more than just Legos. It was also a comic book series, regular book series, multiple web serials, and 3-4 direct to video movies.
The lore and plot were astonishingly complex and in-depth. Also surprisingly dark in places despite the target demographic (a lot of surprisingly brutal deaths).
I was huge into it as a kid and it was actually the story I got into first before the toys.

Hey Will and Brian! I've watched your channel and podcasts for years, been somewhat of a silent supporter, but this episode came out with perfect timing. Will opened by saying Dragonlance was really his gateway into fantasy; for me, this was the SaGa series of games (starting in the US as Final Fantasy Legends on the gameboy.) What I wouldn't realize until very recently was that series creator Akitoshi Kawazu also considers Dragonlance his own primary influence into fantasy and all of his games carry similar themes.
In fact, there are so many similarities once I started digging deeper, that it almost makes many of the SaGa games (Romancing SaGa in particular) seem like borderline unofficial Dragonlance modules. Heck, in the newest remaster (Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song) there are literal lances named Malystryx and Khellendros you can get from killing boss dragons. The god of light and leader of the pantheon is even a Paladine/Fizban expy that pretends to be a lowly minstrel traveling with you.
In any case, if you're into very open ended, unique JRPGs it might be worth looking into, otherwise I just wanted to share this bit of trivia and also share in this overlap between our favorite series.
Edit: Wanted to just note that SaGa is considered one of the "big" Square Enix franchises behind Final Fantasy, along with the Mana series. Less known in the west, but makes relatively big waves in Japan.
Edit edit: Oh my lord, I wrote this only a few minutes into the video, Will actually gets into this. Yeah, check out SaGa guys, Kawazu and his boys are vindication for your theory, and Kawazu definitely worked on the early Final Fantasies as well.

23:40 mentions that in the first book, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the Companions encounter the Draconians that both turn to stone and explode. Sadly, that is horribly incorrect. The only ones the Companions encounter throughout the first book are the Baaz, the ones who turn to stone. The non-blunt weapons used to kill them have a chance to be trapped within the body provided that the weapon is not magical, as Tanis stumbled upon in the second half of the book with Kith Kanon's (sp?) blade.
The Kapaks were not introduced into the story until the second half of the book, right after Fizban joins the group as the Companions are being taken by the slave caravan to Pax Tharkas. The Kapaks melting into the pool of acid is not immediately apparent, but the rest of the Draconians they are facing fall back to everyone's confusion until the bodies melt. Their saliva is a paralytic poison, and they will actively lick their bladed weapons both before and during combat.
The Bozaks are not introduced until the second book, Dragons Of Winter Night, and they are the ones whose bones explode on death. They are the equivalent of Sorcerers with their innate spellcasting ability, but it is more along the lines of a Divine Soul as their power is Divine Spells instead of Arcane.
The Sivaks were not introduced until the second book as well. They are the only draconians with the actual ability to fly. All the others can only glide, which very much contradicts the gameplay in the video game "DragonStrike," which is itself not related to the board game that had a space between the compound word. Their death throes have them transforming into the shape of the foe that delivered the killing blow provided that they're humanoid. They also have this ability to shapeshift when THEY kill a humanoid enemy, allowing them to infiltrate the enemy ranks to sow confusion and other deeds. If the one that killed them was of non-humanoid nature (or too small / large?) they would instead burst into flame and become ash.
The Auraks were not introduced at all in the War Of The Lance trilogy, but featured as the main antagonist for the video game "Champions Of Krynn." Myrtani was the name of that one. Auraks must be killed twice. The first time they go down they go into a berserk fury and are restored to full health. The second time they are downed they reform again into a volitile ball of energy that cannot be damaged. One round later the ball explodes in a 5 foot radius. Auraks are the high level mages of the group and the ONLY ones without wings.
The above information is my knowledge of the series only with it following 2nd Edition rules. The War Of Souls trilogy was the shift from 2nd edition to 3.0 edition. The end of the third book of that trilogy introduced a regiment of Draconians who had only two pages of text dedicated to them. They disappeared back where they came from after the brief skirmish that wiped out the rest of the 'enemy' troops fleeing from the 'protagonist' and her army. This draconian army is VERY different in morals than what was traditional for them as they, themselves, were defectors of the Dragonarmy during the War Of The Lance. This regiment was the First Dragonarmy Engineers.
These draconians have their own set of novels entitled "The Doom Brigade" (2e - 3e) and "Draconian Measures" (3.5e) along with two chapters each in 5-7 different Short Story books that featured their plight between the two main novels. Both of the novels feature stat blocks for creating PC's of each of the Draconian types, and in the case of Draconian Measures, all five male types, all five female types, and even the unstable Draconian clones that the Aurak antagonist of the second novel was creating that had a very short life span.
The differences between the males and females are quite interesting.
Baaz: They didn't go into detail in either the short stories or the second novel
Kapak: Their saliva has the effect of a Cure Light Wounds spell, provided the damage did not originate from that same Kapak's bite. This is seen and commented upon by both Draconian protagonists Commander Kang (Bozak) and Subcommander Slith (Sivak) after they learn of this odd trait from their female human friend they met in Doom Brigade.
Sivak: The twin sisters, Hanra and Shanra, used their very unique ability to get information from the males during the time between novels as well as the second novel to literally blend in with the males, spying on their briefings and even taking part in them in one case. It was how the females were able to procure weapons in the second novel under the noses of all the males even after the Antagonist ordered a thorough search of their compound.
Bozak: Only one female bozak was in the clutch of eggs recovered at the end of Doom Brigade. She was the leader of the females and I don't recall if she ever used spells.
Aurak: There was only one Aurak in the group of females and she was the Bozak's right hand, so to speak. In the short stories it was made abundantly clear that she had the skill that only existed in 3.0, "Intuit Direction." Throughout the short stories and even in the second novel she was casting low level spells. She had a brief interaction with the Aurak antagonist of the second book in which she was asked if she needed to study her spells. After answering in the negative he was disappointed, but Kang was highly relieved. It was never revealed to the males that she was, instead, a Sorcerer. She never cast spells in the presence of the males.
At the conclusion of the second novel, in the time of 3.5e, the Aurak antagonist, Myranata, only had to be killed once and there was no explosive death throe.
I would very much like to have all the books again, and I would very much love to know if any books were made about the Draconians after Draconian Measures. I lost every book I had during the mid 2000s due to reasons I will not go into any detail over, several of which have been out of print since the late 80's. I never had any of the rulebooks for Dragonlance, sadly.

Something I do for martial characters is they can do all the battlemaster maneuvers but only the battle master gets to add a superiority dice to them. A pretty easy fix I think needs to apply to more in the game. Why can a character only charge if they have a feat? Stuff like that in my games are possible for anyone but the class feature or feat gets to do it better.

    • @PaulGuy
      @PaulGuy ปีที่แล้ว +1

The new adventure implies that the Towers of High Sorcery will accept anyone who uses arcane magic. I think the reason it wasn't covered is because sorcerers weren't a thing until 3e, by which time there was a drastically different paradigm going on with magic in the setting (this was the Age of Mortals/SAGA game system). Moving on to the 3.5e semi-official books (it wasn't WotC, but it _was_ by the setting's creators), the setting's timeline had gone past that point, and used the 3e sorcerer as an explanation for what was going on with the SAGA era magic.
If you're familiar with Dragonlance lore and are running something in the late Age of Mortals, post War of Souls, pretty much anything goes. How I'd retcon sorcerers into the current 5e adventure, which is set at the beginning of the War of the Lance, is that sorcerers were always there, but rarely learned that path. If someone showed a knack for magic, they'd get trained as a Tower wizard. A rare few might sneak through the cracks and develop their skills along a different path, essentially becoming a "wild magic" practitioner unless they take a Tower test, which they're perfectly allowed to do. They can practice magic however they want, the Tower just wants to keep track of who's capable of doing it.
      Sorry about my essay.

So, that Elf was Paladin, who became mortal. Prior to that, in what is called the Age of Mortals, (a very hit or miss setting), essentially Takhisis had stolen existance. But doing so she had severed the normal travel of souls. So anyone that died did not go on to their normal afterlife, but instead got stuck in this false Krynn.
After many, many years people discovered how to to harness the natural magics of the world in a way that the old renegades had. Initially by draining magical items, but then by using natural forces. Similarly, later the religious discovered how to cause their own miracles, powered by passions. Both othese turned out to just be draining the energy of the souls trapped in this false realm.
Eventually Takhisis regains her strength, and beginsa crusade of world conquest through her chosen prophet, Mina. The rest of the gods finally figire out what she did, and merc her. That ends the Age of Mortals, which a lot of people had hated for various reasons, and it really hasn't progressed.
After that came the Lost Chronicles, taking place inbetween the first three books, and the current trilogy which involves Chaos and time travel going wrong.

Its amazing that the MMO RPG developers have not seen the great potential in a DragonLance MMO game setting. DragonLance is the EPIC D&D Setting. Like LOTR was for fantasy. I read 90% of the novels and I loved them all. Best fantasy game setting ever. A movie series based on Drago Lance would be EPIC. Comparable to Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.

There are also greater and lesser Dragonlance. The one described here in the video is the lesser one the greater one is created with the Hammer of the Dwaven King of Thorbardin. The hammer can also create lesser ones as well. The metal used for the dragonlance is called dragonmetal it was made from the essence of the Wyrmfather. Wyrmfather was created by takhisis after learning how dragons are made. Wrymfather looks like all the chromatic dragons mixed together but with a grayish silver look. He is also as strong as the God of Knights Kiri-jolith who had to form a mountain prison around the Wyrmfather to defeat him. Wyrmfather is eventually killed and his blood and essences pool and this pool is liquid metal that is dragonmetal. There are two dragonmetal pools the first is under the Silver Dragon Mountain that was the Wyrmfather the second one is less known and with unknown orgin located in a secret location in khakis Mountain near the Thorbardin Dwarven Kingdom.

One of the things I like about DL is that it's a low magic world. Magic is very rare and very distrusted. Very different from FR

Way back when we made our Kender player our loot mongering mule. He had this knack of always having more than we would ever give him.

Could you imagine that there was some other blasphemous culture living in a mountain on some other continent in Krynn and the gods just decided to kill two civilizations with one stone? 😂

TSR was the shit, when wizards of the coast took over, they ruined and rode dragon lances corpse hard. Dragonlance should have gotten lord of the rings level movies instead of the shitty cartoon that was fucking horrible, that and their dungeon and dragons movie from late 90s early 2000s was also shit. Raistlin was my favorite and would have been worthy of his own movie trilogy . Huma, and the heros of the lance, they could have done at least 7 full length AAA movies that would have crushed the box office if not done shity.

The first red flag was the intro that had crap music that was too loud and drowned out any narrative. The second red flag is the narrators reading their narrative instead of just asking about their impressions...
