    Top tip for the Woolacombe course - if you are good at running downhill then start right at the front, even if you don't intend to finish near the front. The course starts with a glorious long and extremely runnable downhill stretch to the beach but it's very narrow so if you're in the middle of the pack there is just nowhere to stretch out. There's loads of space once you're on the beach for the speed merchants to do their thing.

    That was wonderful and wholesome! I have two local Parkruns (Skattås and Bildal near Gothenburg), but they bring out a competitive streak in me that I don't like very much. I wish I could just treat them like a fun run but the red mist descends!

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't let guilt over a natural reaction tarnish the joy of the activity. Refrain from elbowing people out of the way and hissing at them as you pass, stay after you finish to cheer other runners on, volunteer now and then, and just embrace the social aspect, which is really what it seems to be about.

    Hafan Pwllheli is a deceptive one. All beach. Running to a dot in the distance and then back the way you came. The surface changes from step to step, making it really hard going. It's a mixture of soft dry sand, damp loose sand, damp hard packed sand, very wet sand, shingle and large pebbles which want to twist your ankles.
    I did it last Saturday. It sapped my energy so much I had to walk for 50m about 300m from the end.

    Definitely try Cornwall, I have two local runs and both have good hills Mount Edgecombe and Lanhydrock. Beautiful manor houses with runs in the gardens and woods

    Ooh, want to try that one now - I've done Whinlatter in the Lake District, which is definitely one of the toughest five. After the initial downhill, it feels like constant uphill until just before the end. Or come and join us at Highwoods when it's been raining :)

    Portrush in Northern Ireland is another sandy one

  • @bertchalmers
    @bertchalmers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need to try Hafan Pwllheli parkrun! All beach but the sand swaps to gravel to rocks to hard sand... and the slower you are, the more the tide comes in.... the higher up the beach you go into the softer sand... which slows you down and the cycle repeats!!!

      Sounds like hell! We must send Sarah there to investigate. 😂😂😂

      I did that last Saturday! It was low tide. A mixture of energy sapping soft sand, wet sand, shingle, ankle-twisting pebbles and hard packed sand. You never knew what your next step would do.

    Try Seaton also in Devon. Predominantly flat along the promenade but starts and finishes on pebbles. Definitely a unique surface!

    I did that ParkRun a few years ago. It’s an amazing ParkRun, definitely hard up the dune of doom and the finish is up hill 😥

    I'm a recent convert to Parkrun tourism of the alphabet kind, but having watched this video I'm gutted. You see, my local Parkrun is Whiteley in Hampshire. And the more astute of you will already have noticed that Whiteley begins with a 'W'. So I already have the 'W' Parkrun. That is a great shame... 😂 I recently ran the lovely Queen Elizabeth Country Park for my 'Q' and that was a tough hilly course up and down through forest trail and I enjoyed it, so maybe the Dunes ay Woolacombe are calling to me... Great video.

    Try Itchen Valley Parkrun outside Southampton in the depths of a wet winter. The muddiest, sloppiest, filthiest Parkrun I've found yet.

  • @flamerron

    Try Durlston Country Park! It now holds the record for the most elevation in a parkrun. I was one of the rangers there and ran the Inaugural - I could show you round?

    What an interesting video. Every run I do is on the beach pretty much because I live 3/8 of a mile from the beach. I did a 5k in sand dunes once and the hills were miserable.

    Whinlatter forest Parkrun is a challenging rewarding one, woul definitely make for a good vid, especially if the lamas are around. Westpark Munich is my next epic tourism adventure. But will never beat Crissy fields that is no more 😢
