I also wouldn't compare him to be the Darth Vader of fantasy seeing how other then the fact they were both once good men. But other then that I just find him to be a utterly meh villain. Never read the books so maybe he's more fleshed out in them. But in the films we only see him what in some flashbacks and that is it. Other then that he's just the generic evil force. Who never gets fleshed out. It works for Lord of the Rings as you have other villains and things that can carry the plot. Compared to the end game being coming face to face with him and beating him in some duel like with Vader.

Dragon Age: Origins has a DLC where you play as darkspawn going through the final battle of Denerim, essentially giving the player insight into what would have happened had the protagonist never appeared
Basically, every DMC after DMC3 lets you play as Vergil-dono daddy... And after you play as the legenadary Darkslayer Vergil Son of Sparda, you realize that whacky woo hoo pizza man still lives, because daddy Verge doesn't want him deaded. Also, Uncle Dante is the best uncle in the world.
Hyrule Warriors (the first one) does this three times! After you complete the basic campaign you unlock two additional campaigns, one playing as the game's new villain Cia, the other playing as Ganondorf. Beat the Ganondorf campaign to unlock the true ending of the good guys campaign then beat that and you unlock a bunch of challenge maps that let you play as Ganon, the screen-filling boar monster from the final mission.

Ganon mode from Hyrule Warriors was fun, sprinting around the battlefield in an oversized porcine monster who uses all the other bosses' attacks like it's no biggie! Side suggestion, remember the "under the Red Hood" segment in Arkham Origins where you play the Joker as he becomes the Joker? The Arkham series in general through its DLC maps and characters, Joker in the PlayStation version of Asylum and the eponymous Arkham Knight in the last installment.
Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, an obscure game, has the main villain, General Corrosive, as a playable boss where he is invincible and shoots missiles and stomps on enemies in the 2nd to last mission. Of course there is a time limit as a space station is sent hurtling towards your home planet. It is fun to kill the toughest foes with ease.
18:35 "7 No-Pressure objectives" is a video I'd like to see. It also reminds me of the "Destroy Ganan" objective you get in BotW as soon as the tutorial is over.

JNathan Master Hand isn’t the final boss of Ultimate, that goes to Galeem and Dharkon. If you want to go more technical, Master Hand hasn’t been a final boss since the OG game. Melee had Giga Bowser, Brawl had Tabuu, 4 had Master Core and Ultimate had the already mentioned Galeem and Dharkon.

The Legacy of Kain series sees your bets and raises it with a load of time travel shenanigans as both main protagonists act as bosses over the games. - In Blood Omen you play as Kain and one of the later semi-bosses you face is an illusion of yourself from the future. - Then in Soul Reaver Kain is the last (and also the second) boss for Raziel to fight. - In Soul Reaver 2 Raziel doesn't fight Kain, but the final enemy he faces is himself from the past (although future Raziel is more of a boss being invulnerable at this point). - Then in Defiance you can play as Kain again as well as Raziel and one of the last "boss fights" is the two clashing, first from Kain's, then from Raziel's perspective.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’s decepticon Bruticus. You actually get to play as him first but he does become a boss battle in the final level of the campaign where you play as autobot Jazz.

Someone who repeatedly made stupid decisions that just made everything worse and then had the audacity to blame everyone else for their problems. In the last DLC for Final Fantasy XV you play as Ardyn Izunia, the villain from the main game as you tear up Insomnia while also learning about his backstory. It's one of the few times a game really made me feel sorry for the bad guy.
Ardyn's honestly one of my favorite villains ever, besides just swagdaddy 9000 vibes. Part of him is still in there deep down, helping the protagonists overthrow him. Part of him helps his great great great great great great great great great great great grandnephew accomplish his goals. History should've remembered his sacrifice. Ifrit is the real villain of that game.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you get to play as Master Hand. Granted it was a one time thing unless you restart the story mode but you just get the sense of happiness playing as a hand!

I got one even better. You’ve heard of playable bosses? Well how about a playable *SUPERBOSS* in Final Fantasy Dissidia 012, Feral Chaos. Fun fact: if you claim to be a “Dissisia Expert” in the tutorial, the game throws your level 1 butt at the most powerful version of Feral Chaos where he’s level 130.
They heavily nerf him though. You need to spend points to unlock his assist and EX gauges. The fuck is that shit? And his skills cost more than everyone else already. Sure he'll eventually get there but you have to go though so many hoops to get him (that I still haven't managed to do.) including fighting him twice, just so he can start out really crap.
Though it might not be "playing" as the final boss or the "final" boss (11:01) but in a hat in time, you can get a costume that makes you look like one of the games bosses, Snatcher.

The Legend of Dark Witch-You first play as a literal god of magic and then when you finish her campaign you play as the final boss Riva, princess of Razil. Not sure if that's better, but she has fire hands and can rain swords, so maybe?

This technically isn't a final boss, but The keeper from Evil Within one from the DLC "The Executioner." A boss that JUST. DOESN'T. STAY. DEAD. I think in the first game you "kill" him about 5-6 times. But reappears at the end of both EW 1 and 2 when you re-fight all of the previous bosses.

You can also fight Sauron in another LotR game where you control a party of people that are just behind Frodo and the gang. You can also fight alongside Gandalf against the Balrog. It is called the third age. It is only after you beat Sauron in the main game then you can play as him to wreck the party.
I'm a little sad that Illidan from World of Warcraft didn't show up in this list for the quest that you got to play when learning his backstory where you wipe out your the stereotypical raid group.
Nefarious, you literally play through the game as the bad guy, and when you get to the end, if you’ve chosen the evil ending, you engage in an epic boss battle with the hero Mack. But the twist is, your the one in the world ending metal death machine. Eat your heart out eggman!

Technically, you do get to play as splatoon 2's Octo expansion's true final boss, (Or if that doesn't count, just a normal boss), but you play as them in the first game.
Dragon's Dogma, you start the game playing as this knight only to have him be the final boss. Then to put it even further, depending on how you finished the game, your character becomes the final boss of the next playthrough.
You get one new cutscene at the end of the playthrough, and a rehash of one from Dante's story at the beginning. No other cutscenes. And then, when you should have been fighting Dante, you instead fight a red recolor of Vergil CALLED Dante. And shadow Dante doesn't get to be shadow Vergil. Only thing more disappointing than that in the franchise is DMC: Devil May Cry.
I know of at least one other final boss you get to play as, General Raam from Gears of War. There is a DLC called Raam's Shadow, where there are 3 times where you play as him. I also find it kind of Ironic how one would make fun of Hawkeye for not having any powers, and yet love Batman for the same reason.
Breath of Fire 4 had large portions of the game where you play a recently awakened main baddie. So while you follow Ryu and gang, you also learn what drives Fou-Lu

"The game even features a relentless pursuer boogeyman character of its own called ah... the Boogeyman. But... he's different see, (than Pyramid Head) because instead of a pyramid for a head, he has a gas mask, and instead of a... big knife, he has a... big hammer. Look; you come up with some thing better." Challenge accepted. Imagine a simple patch of faint shadow, that only slightly tints what you see through it. Like a personal rain cloud hovering above and behind you, visible when you adjust the camera angle to see it. An amorphous, moving blob that begins very small at first but continues to ominously grow as you go through the game. Every time you enter into a horrific situation, the dark patch comes lower, and closer to you, until it is a visible shadow over the top of the screen. If your character's life level goes below a certain point during a stressful situation, like combat, a thin wispy tendril reaches down for you out of this thing. You can move into the tendril so that it touches you, and doing so has the immediate effect of doubling your life bar, your speed, and the amount of damage you inflict with melee weapons. Because every thing appears to slow down for you, dodging and shooting become easier. Once you grasp the tendril the effect lasts until either you are killed by your attackers or you slay them and the situation ends. Sounds lovely yes? Except this thing keeps getting bigger. And darker. Soon you may even accidentally run into an offered tendril while you are busy dodging the blow of some monster. Here is the problem: At the end of the battle where it helps you, when it lifts it self off of you, it takes away some of your potential life bar. Permanently. This means eventually you will need to rely on it in order to survive the really big battles, as your life bar will become so small you would suffer one-hit kills if you did NOT let the tendril touch you, and over time, even though it will double your life bar during a battle, that life bar is smaller to start with, so it helps you less and less. The darkness keeps getting lower and lower, tainting more of every scene with this faint swirling miasma, until the whole game has taken on a grimy appearance, as if your monitor had become spotted with stains and tinged with dust on the inside of the screen. Eventually you realize the moment will come, when you are in a battle, and you accidentally slip or run through that tendril. and when it is done helping you, it takes away enough of your life potential that you cannot survive any more. You collapse to the ground, gasping, shaking, unable to bear the weight of your own gear. Helpless prey for what ever comes along. You just lay there, moaning, breathing faintly... until some thing destroys you. In order to defeat this thing, you have to NOT use it's help and avoid the tendril when it is offered. If you have used it a few times, the only way to combat against it is to use light sources, that effectively keep this darkness away. No thing seems to actually harm it, any sort of attack simply goes through it, but it avoids the light sources, especially when it is still small. Use it too often and the darkness begins overwhelming the light sources around you, causing them to flicker, and grow faint. This is sort of a reverse Nemesis. Instead of being the biggest, most threatening thing in the game, it slowly makes every other threat effectively more dangerous to you, by making you weaker.
The issue with this idea is that, although it's a neat monster idea, it's not a very good *game* monster idea. Inside a game, your monster basically just has a very hard to dodge instakill attack that doesn't do you the courtesy of reloading your save. Instead, it lets you play through a bunch of the game until you realize that some later boss is basically unwinnable now.
To be fair you don’t play as him you just have him on your team, the real first time you play as him is in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the Nintendo DS
I'm a bit disappointed that Dragon's Dogma wasn't mentioned as you play as the actual twist final boss in the tutorial. Taken a step even further in subsequent playthroughs where the final boss can be your playable character from a previous playthrough.
Excited to see I’m not the only one thinking of this game! Even if you don’t opt for the bad ending, you still play as Fou-Lu a good portion of the game. Add in if you agree to align with Fou-Lu’s sorrow, and yup, you have the full deal there. Lol
@@Sakanamoto Few RPG back then let you play with super powerful characters early on. Ryu does 80 damage? Look at Fou-lu 2000 damage! Look what you could become! Plus as you said you play him multiple times with his story developing in parallel with yours, unlike let's say Sephiroth that you play only once in the flashback in the original FF7. As a game mechanic, that was awesome.
Fou Lu from Breath of Fire 4. Interspersed through the main party's journey you play cutscenes as Fou Lu, who till the last quarter or so of the game you may not have assumed was going to be the bad guy (unless you watched the intro cutscene). A wonderful piece of perspective that makes him a tragic and understandable character, resulting in one of my favorite videogame antagonists.

What about AC 3, you spend the whole prolog playing as a templar to find out in the end in the horror in your eyes because you just realise what you did!
Breath of Fire 4, where you spend a good chunk of the game playing as Fou Lou and witness his transformation from being the Ancient Chinese-themed equivalent of the love child of King Arthur and Jesus Christ to being 1000% done with mortals. And right before your final battle with him you can choose to have the main character and Fou Lou's other half Ryu decide that Fou Lou actually has a point and choose to fuse with him and become an even more powerful final boss and swat your own party like bugs in actual gameplay.
The Warriors Orochi series typically unlocks the main antagonist (or antagonists) when you beat the game. In almost all cases, they kick some serious tail when you level them up. Warriors Orochi 2 also had an official story mode for Orochi himself (as well as some of his lackeys). Where you basically scatter the game's human casts (and even a few gods) aside like ants. Even in later gamers where Orochi (and his upgraded, more evil version Orochi X) aren't quite the final boss anymore, they still manage to be overpowered.
Saw the title of the vid and immediately thought, “Gee, I wonder which LEGO game they’ll include!” Come on, OX, pretty much all of them let you play as the final boss. Take your pick!
Never managed to unlock it, supposedly completing the game with all characters made it available, but there were only eight save files and much more cars to choose from. Maybe it was because it was the European version that cut all the cut scenes and story.
Not surprised it wasn't mentioned, but you play as the final boss from Breath of Fire IV for a decent chunk of the game, and his adventures are integral to the story and the reactions of the protagonist.
Gandalf's fighting in Conquest is exactly why the Valar made his group into Istari in the first place. Although, you could argue that when he deposed Denethor, he was already going against their ruling by leading man, as opposed to merely assisting with words and diplomacy. Damn Gandalf, if you're gonna do something wrong, might as well do it right. Lightning bolt some Nazgul ass before they wreck Minas Tirith's defenses.

You can also play as Sauron in Lego LOTR, and the Eye of Sauron in LOTR: The Third Age. One is adorable and one is weird.
Basically all the licensed LEGO games are like this, you can unlock the villains and then play as them.

JNathan Master Hand isn’t the final boss of Ultimate, that goes to Galeem and Dharkon. If you want to go more technical, Master Hand hasn’t been a final boss since the OG game. Melee had Giga Bowser, Brawl had Tabuu, 4 had Master Core and Ultimate had the already mentioned Galeem and Dharkon.

The Legacy of Kain series sees your bets and raises it with a load of time travel shenanigans as both main protagonists act as bosses over the games.
- In Blood Omen you play as Kain and one of the later semi-bosses you face is an illusion of yourself from the future.
- Then in Soul Reaver Kain is the last (and also the second) boss for Raziel to fight.
- In Soul Reaver 2 Raziel doesn't fight Kain, but the final enemy he faces is himself from the past (although future Raziel is more of a boss being invulnerable at this point).
- Then in Defiance you can play as Kain again as well as Raziel and one of the last "boss fights" is the two clashing, first from Kain's, then from Raziel's perspective.

To try and make Alex act as a "good guy" is like playing GTA while respecting all laws. You can do it, but it's so obvious that you're not supposed to.
In the last DLC for Final Fantasy XV you play as Ardyn Izunia, the villain from the main game as you tear up Insomnia while also learning about his backstory. It's one of the few times a game really made me feel sorry for the bad guy.
Ardyn's honestly one of my favorite villains ever, besides just swagdaddy 9000 vibes. Part of him is still in there deep down, helping the protagonists overthrow him. Part of him helps his great great great great great great great great great great great grandnephew accomplish his goals. History should've remembered his sacrifice. Ifrit is the real villain of that game.
Jack the Ripper's brutal takedown was so brutal it actually made my power flicker. The power outage somehow took less time than the actual takedown.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you get to play as Master Hand. Granted it was a one time thing unless you restart the story mode but you just get the sense of happiness playing as a hand!
I know I consider him a final boss after all the smash games and classic modes.

The Legend of Dark Witch-You first play as a literal god of magic and then when you finish her campaign you play as the final boss Riva, princess of Razil. Not sure if that's better, but she has fire hands and can rain swords, so maybe?

Playing with Sephiroth in FF7 gave you such a feeling foreboding that you'd have to try and fight him in the end.

This technically isn't a final boss, but The keeper from Evil Within one from the DLC "The Executioner." A boss that JUST. DOESN'T. STAY. DEAD. I think in the first game you "kill" him about 5-6 times. But reappears at the end of both EW 1 and 2 when you re-fight all of the previous bosses.

You can also fight Sauron in another LotR game where you control a party of people that are just behind Frodo and the gang. You can also fight alongside Gandalf against the Balrog. It is called the third age. It is only after you beat Sauron in the main game then you can play as him to wreck the party.

Dragon's Dogma, you start the game playing as this knight only to have him be the final boss. Then to put it even further, depending on how you finished the game, your character becomes the final boss of the next playthrough.

Vergil in Devil May Cry 3 Special edition, once you beat the game once yu can play as him. With his own playstyle, weapons and everything.
They could have done so much more with the vergil mode, so much more.

You get one new cutscene at the end of the playthrough, and a rehash of one from Dante's story at the beginning. No other cutscenes. And then, when you should have been fighting Dante, you instead fight a red recolor of Vergil CALLED Dante. And shadow Dante doesn't get to be shadow Vergil. Only thing more disappointing than that in the franchise is DMC: Devil May Cry.
Well, better having a simple Vergil mode than no Vergil mode AT ALL.

I know of at least one other final boss you get to play as, General Raam from Gears of War. There is a DLC called Raam's Shadow, where there are 3 times where you play as him. I also find it kind of Ironic how one would make fun of Hawkeye for not having any powers, and yet love Batman for the same reason.

Imagine a simple patch of faint shadow, that only slightly tints what you see through it.
Like a personal rain cloud hovering above and behind you, visible when you adjust the camera angle to see it.
An amorphous, moving blob that begins very small at first but continues to ominously grow as you go through the game.
Every time you enter into a horrific situation, the dark patch comes lower, and closer to you, until it is a visible shadow over the top of the screen.
If your character's life level goes below a certain point during a stressful situation, like combat, a thin wispy tendril reaches down for you out of this thing.
You can move into the tendril so that it touches you, and doing so has the immediate effect of doubling your life bar, your speed, and the amount of damage you inflict with melee weapons. Because every thing appears to slow down for you, dodging and shooting become easier. Once you grasp the tendril the effect lasts until either you are killed by your attackers or you slay them and the situation ends.
Sounds lovely yes?
Except this thing keeps getting bigger. And darker. Soon you may even accidentally run into an offered tendril while you are busy dodging the blow of some monster.
Here is the problem: At the end of the battle where it helps you, when it lifts it self off of you, it takes away some of your potential life bar.
Permanently.
This means eventually you will need to rely on it in order to survive the really big battles, as your life bar will become so small you would suffer one-hit kills if you did NOT let the tendril touch you, and over time, even though it will double your life bar during a battle, that life bar is smaller to start with, so it helps you less and less.
The darkness keeps getting lower and lower, tainting more of every scene with this faint swirling miasma, until the whole game has taken on a grimy appearance, as if your monitor had become spotted with stains and tinged with dust on the inside of the screen.
Eventually you realize the moment will come, when you are in a battle, and you accidentally slip or run through that tendril. and when it is done helping you, it takes away enough of your life potential that you cannot survive any more. You collapse to the ground, gasping, shaking, unable to bear the weight of your own gear. Helpless prey for what ever comes along. You just lay there, moaning, breathing faintly... until some thing destroys you.
In order to defeat this thing, you have to NOT use it's help and avoid the tendril when it is offered.
If you have used it a few times, the only way to combat against it is to use light sources, that effectively keep this darkness away. No thing seems to actually harm it, any sort of attack simply goes through it, but it avoids the light sources, especially when it is still small. Use it too often and the darkness begins overwhelming the light sources around you, causing them to flicker, and grow faint.
This is sort of a reverse Nemesis.
Instead of being the biggest, most threatening thing in the game, it slowly makes every other threat effectively more dangerous to you,
by making you weaker.

The issue with this idea is that, although it's a neat monster idea, it's not a very good *game* monster idea.
Inside a game, your monster basically just has a very hard to dodge instakill attack that doesn't do you the courtesy of reloading your save. Instead, it lets you play through a bunch of the game until you realize that some later boss is basically unwinnable now.
Somebody put this into a game or make a game based entirely off of this concept

I'm a bit disappointed that Dragon's Dogma wasn't mentioned as you play as the actual twist final boss in the tutorial.
Taken a step even further in subsequent playthroughs where the final boss can be your playable character from a previous playthrough.
Also you were the Red Dragon's reincarnation if you fail to kill the final boss.. that game was pretty trippy at the end

Plus as you said you play him multiple times with his story developing in parallel with yours, unlike let's say Sephiroth that you play only once in the flashback in the original FF7. As a game mechanic, that was awesome.
Fou Lu from Breath of Fire 4. Interspersed through the main party's journey you play cutscenes as Fou Lu, who till the last quarter or so of the game you may not have assumed was going to be the bad guy (unless you watched the intro cutscene). A wonderful piece of perspective that makes him a tragic and understandable character, resulting in one of my favorite videogame antagonists.

You technically played as the final boss of Bayonetta when you guiding her into the sun avoiding planets.. it err makes alot more sense in context.
But you could have played as Bowser years earlier in the Mario and Luigi series of games. Bowser's Inside Story, specifically, but you had to be eaten by him first.

Breath of Fire 4, where you spend a good chunk of the game playing as Fou Lou and witness his transformation from being the Ancient Chinese-themed equivalent of the love child of King Arthur and Jesus Christ to being 1000% done with mortals. And right before your final battle with him you can choose to have the main character and Fou Lou's other half Ryu decide that Fou Lou actually has a point and choose to fuse with him and become an even more powerful final boss and swat your own party like bugs in actual gameplay.
The Vader intro to Star Wars was the best intro of all time.
It's like the devs going: "Did you find that fun? Because that's the rest of the game but including force lightning."

The Warriors Orochi series typically unlocks the main antagonist (or antagonists) when you beat the game. In almost all cases, they kick some serious tail when you level them up.
Warriors Orochi 2 also had an official story mode for Orochi himself (as well as some of his lackeys). Where you basically scatter the game's human casts (and even a few gods) aside like ants.
Even in later gamers where Orochi (and his upgraded, more evil version Orochi X) aren't quite the final boss anymore, they still manage to be overpowered.

Not surprised it wasn't mentioned, but you play as the final boss from Breath of Fire IV for a decent chunk of the game, and his adventures are integral to the story and the reactions of the protagonist.
Gandalf's fighting in Conquest is exactly why the Valar made his group into Istari in the first place. Although, you could argue that when he deposed Denethor, he was already going against their ruling by leading man, as opposed to merely assisting with words and diplomacy. Damn Gandalf, if you're gonna do something wrong, might as well do it right. Lightning bolt some Nazgul ass before they wreck Minas Tirith's defenses.
Mainly because I just finished it. Kai Chisaki’s beaked rock monster form was playable in ones justice 2. Even if it was kind of awkward to use.
