Great reaction! No effects on voices in the 80s, just great producers and sound engineers who knew how to mix and master the vocals/instruments. Vocalists had to be able to bring the vocals.

I remember it came on after...either Kid N Play or Hammer man, which was M.C.Hammer...they did their thing in the 80s..but it will always be New Edition for me

I hope you keep reacting to more New Kids On The Block....I believe auto tune was not created till 1997.....this was in the 80's so i dont really know what they could have used to make it sound a certain way....I do know that they can sing though because i saw them live in concert back in 2019 and I will again see them this year in June and I am so excited for it!

Love them but I'd have to say they were NOT the first boy band.. most would counter with like The Jackson 5 (1969) being the first more modern boy band then the Osmond's (1970) Then Menudo (1977)... Then New Edition (1983)... Then New Kids came 3 years later in 1986

This was my group growing up in the 80's in Boston. My sister was dating Danny in the late 80's and early 90's so I got to spend some time with those guys. I was able to attend 7 free concerts of theirs thanks to my sister and Danny. These videos bring back so many memories

They got a telling off from the police because Joey was under age when he was driving the car lol. Jordan Knight was my first celebrity crush. I was only about 8 years old.
I was 8 too. Donnie was my favourite back then. But looking back, Jordan was/is hot. Remember when Jordan went solo back in the early 2000's? That song of his, "Give it to you" He still looked the same!
Did you know that the one who sang the part you were wondering about the sound (the one with the long hair) is the actor Donnie Wahlberg who was in a sixth sense and the oldest son in blue bloods and he’s the older brother of mark wahlberg. And side note, mark wahlberg was almost in new kids but he was more into rap and he decided he didn’t want to be in the group.
It's just so cool to re-visit this video, which was beautifully shot in black and white. Donnie Wahlberg later impressed audiences with his appearances in the Sixth Sense. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen :)

Other people have said this already but, I will emphasize it: you really need to listen to "Step By Step" now! 😁I'd consider it the other iconic New Kids song besides this one. I have a feeling the effect you're hearing on Donnie's line was just a flaw in the recording that the engineers liked the sound of and so, they used that take twice. Autotune wasn't invented yet and the voice box/talk box effect wasn't terribly common (and usually would have more emphasis if it was used). So, yeah, I think it was just a bit of a fluke that they ran with.

I was a kid when these guys first started, so I didn't hear them until a few years later. But I do like Donnie Wahlberg as an actor on "Blue Bloods" - he's brilliant on that show.
There are no special effects added to their vocals. It was Donnie's voice your hearing. That is just his singing. More than one member sings lead, at different times. No effects here and NO AUTOTUNE. 😮

This was the song I first heard. Didn't know the name of the group. Was shocked when I found out they were white. Proud Blockhead🤖 since Spring 1989. Fun fact: Jordan Knight came up with the choreography. No auto tune back in 1987.
Fun fact: Jordan wasn't the original lead singer, it was actually Joey McIntyre (the young blonde guy). Joey sang lead on the first album, which flopped. The first 2 songs released (sung by Joey) flopped. They almost got dropped by their record company, but they gave them another chance with a different lead singer (Jordan) and they became a huge success. Must be Jordan's male falsetto voice. LOL. Donnie and Joey have some solos, but Jordan is the lead singer, that's why he's in front.

They got a telling off from the police because Joey was under age when he was driving the car lol. Jordan Knight was my first celebrity crush. I was only about 8 years old.
I was 8 too. Donnie was my favourite back then. But looking back, Jordan was/is hot. Remember when Jordan went solo back in the early 2000's? That song of his, "Give it to you" He still looked the same!

Did you know that the one who sang the part you were wondering about the sound (the one with the long hair) is the actor Donnie Wahlberg who was in a sixth sense and the oldest son in blue bloods and he’s the older brother of mark wahlberg. And side note, mark wahlberg was almost in new kids but he was more into rap and he decided he didn’t want to be in the group.
And then he became Marly Mark.
It's just so cool to re-visit this video, which was beautifully shot in black and white. Donnie Wahlberg later impressed audiences with his appearances in the Sixth Sense. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen :)

Other people have said this already but, I will emphasize it: you really need to listen to "Step By Step" now! 😁I'd consider it the other iconic New Kids song besides this one. I have a feeling the effect you're hearing on Donnie's line was just a flaw in the recording that the engineers liked the sound of and so, they used that take twice. Autotune wasn't invented yet and the voice box/talk box effect wasn't terribly common (and usually would have more emphasis if it was used). So, yeah, I think it was just a bit of a fluke that they ran with.

I was a kid when these guys first started, so I didn't hear them until a few years later. But I do like Donnie Wahlberg as an actor on "Blue Bloods" - he's brilliant on that show.

The "effect" is that it's one of the other guys singing on those lines. lol. I can see where it seems like some kind of studio magic. The other dude just has a reedier voice.

Omg yes! I can hear the voice manipulation.. I dunno what it is either but I hear what you’re talking about. I’ve watched live performances of this song and Donnie does struggle to hit the high notes but he does get it. Haha. Love this band though.. again before my time but I’m into it. This was the song I first heard. Didn't know the name of the group. Was shocked when I found out they were white. Proud Blockhead🤖 since Spring 1989. Fun fact: Jordan Knight came up with the choreography. No auto tune back in 1987.
I was a "Blockhead" their concerts are so fun. I think the concerts are better now.
Fun fact: Jordan wasn't the original lead singer, it was actually Joey McIntyre (the young blonde guy). Joey sang lead on the first album, which flopped. The first 2 songs released (sung by Joey) flopped. They almost got dropped by their record company, but they gave them another chance with a different lead singer (Jordan) and they became a huge success. Must be Jordan's male falsetto voice. LOL. Donnie and Joey have some solos, but Jordan is the lead singer, that's why he's in front.
