I seriously dislike people who think that things like theme parks are only for kids (same goes for idiots who believe anything animated automatically makes it childish). If they actually took the time to go into such places they would realize that there are not only groups with kids but groups with no children that appreciate the whimsicality and even the technical aspects of theme parks.
All this movie does is remind me of "Missing in the Mansion" which put a billion times the effort into an 11-minute short than a "critically acclaimed" 104 minutes of pure dribble.

fuck me you all sound like autists, disney is a child based company and they make the most money from children, disneyland is for children to young adults. Trying to play off the fact that you like the "technical aspects" is just a excuse for not growing the fuck up. Disney is specifically based around children.

    • @animeotaku307
      @animeotaku307 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

+Kitty Grimm I don't think "protagonist" is the proper term for him; a protagonist is supposed to be pursuing a goal and drives the plot forward, which Jim doesn't do. "Hero" isn't appropriate either, given that he doesn't do anything heroic. "Main character" is probably the best, since the film focuses on him. Not that that's a bad thing; other stories can work by observing what happens to a specific character or person.

In case someone needs clarification on the Ben Stiller joke, he's referring to the fact that Ben Stiller's characters usually unwittingly find themselves in over the top scenarios. A zoo lion on an island jungle, a night guard in a magic museum, a fashion model in a brainwashing conspiricy, and a filming gone wrong. Jim in this movie is kinda in that sort of scenario, only much less likable.

So I decided to take the plunge and watch Escape from Tomorrow. Not out of genuine liking of the movie, god no, but out of a morbid curiosity. And...well no surprise, it was a piece of shit. But, one thing I’m surprised no criticizes often, is the title of the movie-I know, that’s strange, but hear me out. Escape from Tomorrow is a frustrating movie in the sense that it’s an art film that parades the idea that it has some artistic theme at work, but when you step back and look at the whole picture, the movie is a mess. And none of this is more apparent in the title. The movie attempts to critique the idea of escapism. Right at the very beginning of the movie, Jim states how he wants to enjoy the end of his vacation, with the subtle implication that he wants to forget the fact that he has to go back home to a bad marriage, a disrespectful son, and no job. He tries throughout the entire movie to distract himself, with the women, alcohol, and rides. By having the movie be titled Escape from Tomorrow, and by setting up Jim wants to forget about the next day, it’s implying that the main conflict of the movie is about whether or not Jim faces the next day or not, or whether not vacations like Disney World can really make us forget about reality. And since the only way to escape from tomorrow is death, the movie really should been about Jim contemplating suicide, which would’ve fitted in the ending. However, because the movie is an absolute mess, it chooses to completely disregard the title. Instead of focusing on Jim’s emotions, and how he tries to distract himself, the movie chooses to focus on dumb shit like “cat-flu,” or emus, or the Siemens corporation, or dreams, or anything that has nothing to do with what the movie promised in the title. To make matters more frustrating, when Jim eventually dies, it’s not his fault at all, completely throwing the potential character arc out the window. So by having the movie be titled Escape from Tomorrow, it only highlights how much of a mess the movie truly is, because it sets up in the beginning that that’s what the movie is going to be about, but then completely disregards it in favor of shitty artsy symbolism. I know this much text probably wasn’t worth it for this movie, but god do I hate Escape from Tomorrow, and just needed to say it.

...So the director wants us to believe not only that Disney would shut down a ride on a whim and kick everybody out of line (which they never do, by the way) without issuing any compensatory fastpasses (which they give out all the time), but also that they would leave all the people who are already on the ride stuck on it. That’s what he’s implying, because right behind the cast member who allegedly shut down Buzz Lightyear in that scene was a full car of people who had just sat down, and presumably there’s about a hundred people currently on the ride ahead of them. I guess he thinks Disney is just going to leave them stuck on the ride all night.

the scariest part of this whole movie is the fact they mixed up disneyland and walt disney world, somehow creating a parallel dimension where walt disney world and disneyland were fused together, making it so both theme parks existed in the same place at the same time. While this sounds like a cool idea, it actually backfired in the worst way because disney 'stans' fans came and raged so incredibly hard at this change to the point of disney having to murder every fan of their park and enfusing a majority of their souls into disney genie, forced to sell paid fastpasses to park guests for eternity. The remainder of which ended up being small world dolls, where anytime a disney fan rode it's a small world and critizized at least 3 changes, the dolls would suck their soul and they would become either another doll, or end up as a disney genie robot. Pretty interesting lore, wouldn't you agree? I probably came up with the strangest yet most logical backstory as to what's happening in this entire movie.

I told Tony this on Twitter once, but the reason Disney didn’t flinch at Randy Moore putting a bullseye on himself and screaming ‘SUE ME! SUE ME!’ is because…they fell for it before.
Air Pirates Funnies were a small group of underground comic artists who made raunchy Mickey parody comics (their name was taken from a Mickey antagonist group).
They were so eager to get sued by Disney that the artist and head honcho had a son of a Disney board member sneak a copy of a comic into a board meeting.
The bait worked, and Disney sued them.
The Air Pirates were so incompetent (they thought Mickey was public domain at the time, he wasn’t), and that the comics were fair use (the comics were 50 cents, so no)
that the judge sided in favor of Disney.
The head man kept doing the comics despite the order, and wanted to appeal (the Supreme Court denied that)
His plan was to ‘lose, appeal, lose again, continue drawing his parodies, and eventually to force the courts to either allow him to continue or send him to jail’
Disney settled the case to not enforce judgement if the Pirates never did the parodies again.
It’s hard to explain, but The Pirates and the Mouse has most of the story.
Long story short, Disney learned from the Air Pirates case and didn’t feed the Moore troll.

I saw this on Netflix. I thought it was... OK. I liked the idea, I think it had promise - both the guerrilla tactics and the story of real life misery smashing you in the face on vacation at Disney World. I had to agree with RedLetterMedia, when they say it was enjoyable enough, but the symbolism was all very obvious and sophomoric. The filmmakers could have gone a lot further and deeper with this. Dad chasing jailbait was skeezy enough, but you just made me realize that his sexual frustration really was his only character trait.

    You know, it’s funny.
After watching this review, I actually found something that is basically what Escape From Tomorrow *should* have been, it’s a tabletop RPG supplement*.
It’s called “This Is A Dark Ride” And is for the horror TRPG “In Dark Alleys,” And it deals with playing campaigns at the Disney parks, both in a mundane and supernatural way. In the mundane sense, it shows the more human and dark aspects, with things like how cast members are still people can do family-unfriendly stuff (drugs, sex, etc.) behind closed doors, showing how even at places like Disney there is always places where innocence can be lost.
The supernatural part had a dark world version of the Disney parks, which looked like a decaying version of them in an alternate dimension which had such lovely elements like people with the power to transport themselves developing these powers at the park as children, dangerous magical relics that were disguised like mundane things (like a camera with footage of Doom Ride that makes you disappear if you look at the picture) and various robots who acted like patrons and workers, who would become murderous and crazy if you interfered with how they were running the park, like cutting in line.
Seriously, someone should just make an adaption of that! It’s certainly a better take on “Domestic Disney Horror” than Moore’s crybaby rant of a movie.
*Note: For those of you who don’t know; RPG supplements are basically books that act as DLC for Dungeons & Dragons-like games.
