As someone with extremely hooded eyes and low brows, I have gotten to the point where I just gave up on watching makeup tutorials because even the ones for "hooded" eye NEVER worked for me. I've just had to find out how to make makeup work for myself and I think I've done a pretty good job. Although I've said all this, I really really appreciate this video. It's one of the most in depth and actually informative videos I've seen about hooded eyes. It means a lot to see someone be realistic and say that things just will not work the same on these types of eyes.

I feel you! I love makeup, but what can you really do with such a narrow space bw your hooded eye and the brow ??? :/
Lately here is what I do, if that helps : I use a shimmery crayon around the eye, inner corner and in the water line to make it look more "open" (I found a Charlotte Tilbury eye crayon that does not transfer, a miracle!), and if I feel like going glamorous I just add the tiniest triangle of a darker shadow or crayon in the outer corner to make the eye look catty XD
Long lasting and transfer proof is our graal

I have it, too. I actually find that the twiggy makeup look really suits my particular eye type because that little fake lid with the eyeliner kind of gives the illusion the lid's in that spot. I also try to play with the undereye "bags" (or, what Korean makeup gurus call the "aegyo sal" ) and white eyeliner in the waterline to make the eyes look bigger. If you really want to do an intricate look, block out the eyebrows :D

I draw on the tails at a higher angle and I have so much more room to work with; plus I get to play around with different brow shapes. Another thing is watching drag makeup tutorials. Lots of drag queens work against their anatomy to create beautiful eye looks, so watch what they do and take note for how you could incorporate it into your own makeup

      @theultimatecringeboi8862 ปีที่แล้ว +61

i had the exact same problem basically, and i still have a hard time with it, but there is a way to make it look sort of that way. for example, making wings almost droop downwards so that way you get a very nice looking wing that doesn't look super strange, like engaging your lower lash line and lower outer corner area. otherwise you can look straight ahead in the mirror and let your eyes just rest normally, and draw the wing you want while keeping your eye completely still and natural. it will end up with a pretty intense bat wing eyeliner look, which i personally love, but if you don't like it it's not a big deal because when your eyes are just resting and your face is neutral, you won't even notice the bat wing. I know this may not be achievable depending on just how hooded your eyes are, but mine are a mixture of jennifer laurence's and the first very fully hooded example she showed where the brow was drooping over the eyelids. if you want, i can try to explain more of what i mean further if you're willing to exchange snap or ig. hope this helps at least a tiny bit

As someone with with partially hooded eyelids, small-ish rounded eyes and low-set eyebrows, I’m really interested in trying out your idea of drawing the wings while letting my eyes rest naturally ! Why always blaming beauty standards? People with hooded eyes were/are very often considered beautiful. Eva Green, Jennifer Lawrence... today. Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner... yesterday. Paul Newman, John Wayne, Brad Pitt, Chris Hemsworth... A LOT of looks gain something mysterious and fascinating thanks to hooded eyes! So, please, don't think you're something "less" just because many youtubers have "regular" eyes and you don't. "Regular" eyes are obviously easier to put make-up on, and offer more variety of possible combinations. But all types of eyes can be beautiful. In this case there's not beauty standards to blame, but only the excess of insecurities that sometimes affect us when comparing ourselves with other people.

I have very hooded eyes with low brows (they are right on or below my eye socket depending on the part of my brow). I’ve learned some tips over the years that I’d love to share:
    1. Brushing your brows up is trendy rn, but it will always be there for us hooded ppl to make our eyes look bigger/more open and give us more lid space for makeup!
    2. A wash of color all over your upper lid and lower lash line works well. Just make sure to bring it up high enough that you can see it when your eyes are open. It’s okay if it touches your brows a little bit.
    3. Idc what anyone says, shimmers in the “crease” of hooded eyes looks beautiful and magical. Try sweeping one in there w a fluffy brush so it’s already diffused without any work
    4. If you have epicanthic folds like me, blending your inner corner highlight up along the fold can look quite pretty. Most videos advise against highlighting your hood/fold but I feel like a little fairy when I do this
    5. If you want that smoky liner look but your hood covers your top lash line, try applying makeup as if where your hood meets your eyelid is your lash line. With my eyes open I just smoke a dark color there and blend out w lighter color(s) like normal (use small brushes). Sometimes I will still put eyeliner on my lash line bc you can still see when you look down
    6. You look down more often than you think! Your eyeshadow will still be visible sometimes :)
    7. Practice when it doesn’t matter like right before you shower or right before you go to bed when you’re going to wash your face anyway
Probably no one will read this but if you did I hope it somehow helped :)

So I started practicing before showing at night, and any mistakes were quickly washed away for no one to notice. That way it looks like your eye is extended and not just pulled down. I really like that look :)

I have this and it makes eyeliner and shadow challenging! The best advice I've seen is that you have to ignore that part and work your eyeliner and shadow in within your eyelid. Also I like adding concealer in that area for the uplift effect. I do it before eyeshadow and afterwards.

I have full hooded eyes. The things that helped me are:
    1. Shaving the tail of my eyebrow.
I have been rocking this look for 10 years. For I have very little space between my hooded eye and eyebrow, shaving the tail was a huge game changer for me. The last five years, I had microblading on. It made everything so much easier.
    2. Double eyelid tape.
If you are going for a bold cat eye look, double eyelid tape will work like a charm. You can apply eye shadow on it or underneath it too. I don't always use the tape though.
    3. Fake lashes.
    For obvious reasons...
    4. Waterproof mascara.
Remember the pain of staining your make up because your lashes touch your face the whole time... Yeah. Fun, isn't it? Waterproof mascara is the holy grail of whole hooded eye people around the world. No more staining, thank you very much!
    5. Watching drag make up & asian make up tutorials.
That's how I learned to put on cut crease make up. These people have tremendious knowledge when it comes to creating the tailored looks for hooded eyes. So lucky to have them.
I am very grateful for my beautiful hooded eyes. When you understand how to work with them, you will get tons of compliments for their unique shape. Never give up experimenting and always try new things. Hope the tips helped!

My tip was more just for people looking to maximize that area of their eye. It also has lots to do with the type of hooded eyes the person has as well. Like for me even doing thinner brows it actually doesn’t open my lid up much just because my brow bone sits a bit low on my face. Even if you don’t want to use color, you can still use these techniques with nudes, grays, mauves, etc. The look might be more subtle, but the effect will still be there. I do a lot of bridal makeup and clients often want a more toned down version of a colorful look. Also, being a bit older, you can still do this look but maybe play with matte shades instead of shimmer. Or mix a similar matte and shimmer color to tone down the sparkle a bit. Again, these are techniques I often use with older clients and they work. You just have to play a bit to find the right combination for you. And if you don’t like how it’s working out, just grab some micellar water, wipe it off, and start again, trying something a bit different this time. I honestly enjoy working with older clients or those with hoods, downturned eyes, etc because I get to be more creative in product choices and placement. I feel like I’m actually using my artistic muscles more. And because makeup so easily comes off, I’m not afraid to say that this look isn’t coming together how I want and I’m going to start over.

I have deep set eyes that are hooded, not hooded by the sagging lids but there's brow bone there, AND I have low brows too. The only space I have is somewhere towards the outer corners. I'd really appreciate if you share some everyday makeup as well as glam tutorials 😍

100% agree that low brows are beautiful. But if you want to experiment with your brow placement, this is where drag queen makeup techniques really excel. There are tricks like bleaching your brows with a face-safe product, concealing, then drawing on a new brow placement. If you hate it, re-dyeing your brows with Just For Men is easy, as long as you don’t have any sensitivities.

I have slightly hooded eyes kinda like the bottom two pics but my main struggle with eyeshadow is that one eye is more hooded than the other. I just try to look straight in the mirror and check that it looks symmetrical with the eyes open and looking straight. It works most of the time in minimising the asymmetric look. Also thin eyeliner. Else its just going to be liner that can be seen.

OMG THANK YOU! In more than 10 years of beauty yt, no one ever addressed the fact that there are tons of different hooded eyes! Having the lid covered in the inner corner, in the middle or in the outer corner changes drastically the effect you're going to get! not to even mention a full hooded eye...
I've a central hooded lid, with a little bit of space in the inner corner and outer corner and very high eyebrows and I had the hardest time converting so called "hooded eyes makeups" to my eyes. (and No, asian tutorials won't necessarily work for every hooded eye. let's say it once for all).

something i really appreciate about your videos is that you really make an effort to show your audience how to understand their own features and work with them instead of against them! a lot of makeup content creators don't really take that into account and work with a very narrow definition of beauty, and i love that you try to make makeup accessible to everyone and to help them understand what will or won't work for them and their face.

If you have extremely hooded lids the Chinese/ Korean makeup tricks really look gorgeous. Like, matte lids and crease and then focusing the shimmer on the lower lash line closer to the inner corner and drawing your eyes outwards with darker shades even contouring the bottom of your eye bag to open it up more.

  • @charlene7406
    @charlene7406 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This all makes a lot of sense to me. I have hooded eyes, and whenever I do eye makeup, it always seems like doing the inner corners with a lighter, slightly iridescent shade and using eyeshadow under the lower lid tends to be a lot more effective. I can even not use eyeliner on my lower lid due to my eyes being a little sensitive, and use eyeshadow in a cranberry or brown shade and have it shape my eyes in a more effective way while highlighting the fact that my eyes are pretty big.
It's better to accentuate what you have, rather than trying to make your eyes do something they can't. There's beauty in variety.

i don't have hooded eyes, but i'd love to see a tutorial for down-turned, sydney sweeney kinda eyes. every tutorial out there is about a lot of lifting and trying to "fix" it, and there's only so far you can go with it without it looking really weird, since it goes completely opposite to the natural shape of my eyes. you're the one makeup artist on youtube who gives great tips for being realistic and working with your anatomy instead of against it to follow every current trend, so i'd really love to see a video about this!

Beautiful color choices & great tips, especially that little shadow trick at the very end of the video. It's amazing how jist that little bit of color & the flick of a brush added so much dimension! I really appreciate how you emphasize being realistic in your expectations based on your actual anatomy and how there's nothing wrong with having hooded eyes. It's all about celebrating what we are born with, how to emphasize that which makes us each unique. Thank you for bringing that home at the end. It's frustrating to see & hear, after all these years & the progress we've made in society & technology, that many in the fashion & beauty industries still places value on the wrong or negative things.

This video was so helpful and so comforting to watch. It made me feel heard and understood and it’s nice to unite all us hooded eye folks! Thank you so much Alex! I’ve found something that’s really important is to simply remind myself that hooded eyes are actually seriously beautiful. To boost my confidence I look at pictures of Claudia Schiffer, literally one of the most famous supermodels ever, and she’s got really hooded eyes and they’re so powerful! They make her look like a warrior queen or a tigress, but they can also be super sensitive and feminine. Tbh a lot of 90s supermodels have a range of hooded eyes, but I think we all feel a bit underrepresented at the moment because we see a lot of makeup looks online on people with lots of lid space just because it’s been the recent trend for the last decade or so.

  • @meinkanta

My eye shape is similar to Blake’s and I’ve recently been really enjoying just a shimmer (especially a duochrome or multichrome) all the way from the lashline to the brow, and diffusing it laterally at the outer corner also. It can also be really helpful to adjust your brow shape to give you more space to do this. I shave a couple of millimetres off my brow tail so that they’re more straight, as the part of my natural brow shape that slopes back down closes off my eye and gives me less of that outer eye space to work with! Doing this and putting definition on the outside portion of your eyes (whether it’s smoking it out like Alex or using a diffused shimmer) makes that sagging brow portion of your lid look less heavy
I never wear any makeup (shadow, mascara or liner) on my lower lashline for the reason you mentioned on Taylor Swift

Same here! I like to use one color and blend out all the way to my brows and it seems to look really nice. I also don’t wear anything on my lower lid/lashes because it just makes my eyes look so droopy. My eyes protrude quite a bit, so my lower lids are more rounded than most. Anything on them just accentuates that roundedness.

I think the thing people tend to forget is that makeup is meant to be exploratory!
