a.k.a. Subtitles showing up multiple times after hardcoding in VLC fix.
If you're watching this you've probably tried burning subtitles to your video and encountered multiple errors - either subtitles not showing or displaying multiple times.
I've tried just about everything to come up with this solution. Check it out :)

I'm sure it works well enough for short videos, but from my experience with this method, while it does add the subtitles, it desyncs the audio to an insane degree. The desync starts off as bearable, then gets progressively worse. By the end of a two hour video the audio for a gunshot, for example, comes multiple seconds before the trigger is ever pulled.
Edit: Selecting to keep the original audio while editing the profile the doesn't fix the problem, but it does make it slightly better.
Streaming it at all seems to be what desyncs the audio. In other words, it is the process itself that keeps causing problems.
After further reading I have discovered that this problem may only apply to mp4 files.

    *UPDATE*
VLC has made is easy now by going to the Media tab and selecting Covert. The process is similar where you browse and select the video file but now you get to add the subtitle file right away by selecting the *_Use a subtitle file_* checkbox. Next, select the *_Convert/Save_* button, and under Settings section of that window, click the edit tab with the tools icon > go to the Subtitles tab and check the *_Subtitle_* checkbox and the *_Overlay subtitles on the video_* checkbox. You're done! Let it convert, then reopen the video from your file destination.

  • @buzhichun
    @buzhichun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What an incredibly convoluted and inconvenient way to hardcode subtitles! It's like filming your screen to get a clip from a longer video. Or printing out some text and a picture, cutting and pasting them together and scanning it back in order to put graphics in your document. (Ok, maybe not _that_ bad, but it's similar)
If you have to burn in subtitles for a video of an hour, are you just going to wait 60 minutes for the "recording" to finish? What if for whatever reason the video stutters for a moment and that is captured too?
There's easy to use, *free*, dedicated software for this, you know? Just download Handbrake or VidCoder (basically Handbrake in an even more user friendly shell). In the latter all you need to do is:
    1. Select your video file
    2. Select your .srt subtitle file
    3. Press the encode button
    4. Done
It's easier, _significantly_ faster and more reliable and just... the proper way to do this.

But I need to change the audio codec on the video so that my PS4 recognizes it. The changes I did was that:

-At 2:37 Not only have I deleted that "scodec=t140" line, but I have also ADDED everything else before that line, from "vcodec=h264...." to "...samplerate=44100"
And after doing that, it took more time to create the new video, but it finally worked.
    Hope this helps someone else!

It worked. But the output filed turned out bigger than original file. Orignal video file is .mkv file and size is 31 mb. But after hardcoding subtitle, the output file size is 133 mb. When hardcoding the subtilte, i chose H.264+MP3(mp4) option. Process was success and i can see the subtitle added but video size is too big. Why the size is not the same as orignal file?

How long does it take to merge the video plus SRT file? I can very successfully merge these files using the software HD Video Converter Factory but using 720p resolution takes roughly the running time of the video and 1080p resolution takes roughly double the running time. I download a lot of Korean dramas with 50 to 150 episodes from you tube and then download the SRT file from downsub.com. and merge them with HD Video Converter Factory. It takes a lot of time but does a good job of permanently embedding the sub title. The mp4 embedded video can be played on any TV that has a USB port.

I have to thank you for this video! I was going craxy since I have a Zorin 12 OS. I created an ASS subtitle file with Aegisub, then I embedded with HANDBRAKE which softsubs, then I used your method. It workef with ASS files also.

It worked well except for the resulting MP4 subbed file is twice as large as the original non subbed...Ummm...and it wouldn't work on MKVs or other formats. Also when you are removing the text for the Activate Transcoding, I left in the comma (,) and it worked perfectly...Thanks for this very informative video. I will like and subscribe.

Lol, as usual VLC's workflow is a nightmare of counter intuitive steps that you have to follow like a sweaty bomb technician avoiding traps and dead ends. I know it's free, but WTF was wrong with, oh, I dunno, "File--> Save As" followed by standard video compression options? Did the last 30 years of video software convention not happen on the planet they're from?

this is the message that i got... Can't play This file isn't playable. That might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt. 0xc00d36c4

This method works a treat for me! I tried using ffmpeg, but the output file did not contain the subtitles... 😞and that's a shame because using the command line is *much* faster. Cheers, m8!

Hmm... I tried EXACTLY what you did about 4 times now, but the new file doesnt change into the thumbnail, the file is 0 bytes, and when I try to play it VLC opens but no video starts playing... :/

I tried every step exactly several times and each time where it's supposed to do the timer count as the video is supposed to be hard coding, the screen just has the orange cone, but no counting or playing bar color appearing. I have even let it sit and wait for over an hour and nothing happens, no new video appear. My files look exactly like yours. I have Windows 10 (latest) w/ i7 (latest), 16GB Ram, and NVidia card so plenty of power to process this easily. What else can I try? Thanks.

I've tried three times and the best result so far is that I get the word "WHISTLEING" AND THEN "SINGING" in the opening scene then nothing. Does it need a particular .srt file from a particular site. Don't know if there are some duff ones floating around.

why is it when after I embed the English subtitle, it turns Chinese after it finished? it was a waste of time considering the movie was 2hrs to convert. I'm sure it was English cos I watched it first on VLC before converting. How can I fix this?
