  • I was SUPER surprised at this video. Ok...we weren't off to a great start with "Top of the morning to ya Ireland" however, these questions about Ireland asked by an Irish American guy to see how much regular Americans know about Ireland was very interesting!
He asked all kinds of questions from what's the First thing that comes to mind about Ireland, Where is Ireland on the map, Which flag belongs to Ireland to What currency does Ireland use?
Be sure to check out James Prime's original video: • What do AMERICANS know...

I think of the green land and the beauty of it, as well. I recently found out that my Grandparents were from Ireland (I'm Canadian, my Dad was adopted, so I did not know), and would love to visit one day. I think of my ancestors, and the Celtic lore that I have always been drawn to, the myths, legends, stories, etc... I also think of the burning of turf, because I was told all about it and it fascinates me.

May I recommend "How the Irish Saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill. I love histories and biographies, but I was looking for a comedy for something light so I could spend some time just smiling. When I saw the title I smiled and said to myself, "Now this is going to be funny." Little did I know Thomas was dead serious and I learned more about Irish history than most Irish. What a wonderful little green island it is.

Oh my! I was inundated with Irish history growing up. There was a large diaspora from Achill Island to Cleveland and Chicago around the turn of the 19th century and my mother's mother, along with her sisters, and parents were part of it. My mother's great aunt acted as a shuttle, going back and forth on several trips to get more people; I researched this proved it to be true using Ellis Island records. I'm told I'm descended from Brian Boru on my mother's father's side. I heard all about the great famine, Ulster plantation, the O'Neills and O'Donnels (My great, grandmother was an O'Donnell) , etc. It is amazing how little young Americans know or care about their own history, let alone anybody else's!

Well, much of my DNA is Irish. That said, I am amazed that the interviewed people didn't know about Ireland. Though, the answers given may have been radically different if the interviewer chose to interview Irish-Americans (aka: Americans of Irish ancestry).
I would love to see if Irish-Americans could answer all the questions asked.
My family name is Jewish-German (Ott is a name from a story I wrote for my kids, and its a family name too, but not my "surname") yet the majority of my blood is Irish.
In my family (since we are seafarers) we place a strong emphasis on geography and politics, and so, I feel many of my kin would know these questions. I imagine many Irish-Americans would be able to answer the questions with correct answers! 😊

There was a bar there called Dirty Nelly's, Had a great mango, ham and cheese sandwich. And my first trip to Ireland was to Dublin and we stayed at the Jolly Hotel. I absconded with a bath towel with the name of the hotel on it. My step-dad's last name was Jolly. He loved getting that towel. When I was in the Air Force, I did a lot of traveling. We would sometimes stop at Shannon Airport to refuel and service the jet. Two things come to mind about Shannon, we were on our way to Nice France and we were about 30 minutes out and the aircraft commander got a message from the base operations back at Andrews to notify me that my mom had passed away. I was given the option that they would turn the aircraft around and drop me I think either at Shannon or Heathrow. I knew my going home was a personal and important thing to me and my family, but I also knew that we had high level passengers with a schedule that needed to be addressed. I informed the Aircraft Commander to proceed to Nice. During that flight time, they set up flights for me from Nice, to Heathrow, JFK and then Reagan National. I landed at JFK and they called my name and I was told my two sisters were waiting for me in the terminal. So I disembarked, got my luggage and went with them. that was back in 94. A previous trip on a return to the states, we stopped at Shannon to refuel and service the jet. But, we were hit with a delay due to mechanical malfunction that prevented us from taking off till it could be repaired. Our party/passengers could not be delayed so they repositioned a jet from one of our bases in Germany and they took our pax back to Andrews. We had just finished a trip to the Middle East and none of us had clothing for the cold damp weather in Ireland. I had to stay with the jet till about 2300 hours and the crew stayed at a hotel just outside of the airport. I think there was a bar at this hotel called Nelly's. I managed to get a beer and a grilled ham and cheese mango sandwich. Pretty good actually. But my first trip to Ireland was in 1984 to Dublin and we stayed at the Jolly Hotel. My step-father's last name was Jolly, and they had like a bath mat that said Jolly Hotel. Had, being the key word. Somehow it found it's way into my luggage and I gave it to my mom and stepfather upon my visit back home to Connecticut a few weeks later. So that's my stories about Ireland. A very friendly place to be sure.

I have some Irish heritage so a little of that I have known since childhood, some more recently and some due to watching your videos.
Another Irish woman was trying to convince me that despite my full blooded Irish grandmother (who swore like a sailor), I am 100% American culturally. Then she mentioned Irish sandwich shops and it makes perfect sense because I love sandwiches. I have often laid awake at night thinking "I really want a god damn sandwich" or "why the hell isn't there anywhere I can get a god damn sandwich" so I actually am Irish.
I also have watched Formula 1 with a Dutch man and evidently the Dutch love motorsports which makes sense because I'm also Dutch. The rest of me is Spanish by way of New Mexico so I love Mexican food, Paella and conquering indigenous peoples.

Top of the morning is actually an old British greeting. It is still used in some rural Canadian towns. My grandpa who is from rural Ontario tells me it was said commonly as a greeting in his day in Ontario. He doesn't understand why so many people think it's Irish. When I go on a walk I have been greeted by the elderly with this greeting. I read once that it is likely English in origin and was once a common greeting in the Commonwealth.

Definitely do that. I spent a little over a week in Ireland. Rented a car and drove to several places. The people are so friendly pretty much anywhere you go. Found a nice little hot chocolate place on the western coast road driving from Galway to the Cliffs of Moher. Wish I could remember the name of the place. The couple that ran it were lovely people. And the countryside is absolutely stunning.

Dia Dhuit, my Mothers family come from Cork. What I know about Ireland is a few facts: There are 26 counties and capital is Dublin. The best part of the country IMO the west coast from Ring of Kerry up to donegal. One great old movie my mother loved was the quiet man filmed in Cong in mayo county. Do not kiss the Blarney Stone! Love spice bag after pub craw and in love with the hokey tourist stuff!

Since a good chunk of my family history is from Ireland I suppose I would fit into saying that I am to some degree an Irish - American. I have always had an interest in Ireland thanks to my Grandmother, and have been able to get a quick visit to Ireland during a college class trip to both of the British Isles. A few of the fun things that I have learned recently is that Ireland is ruffly the size of Washington State, which is where I am from, both share the primary color of Green thanks to keeping up their own natural surroundings, and if you where able to move Ireland in just a westerly direction to the west coast of the U.S it would end up where Canadas province British Columbia sits which is right above and bordering Washington State Lol.

Answers on a quiz like this are going to be highly regional. The US is almost the size of the EU, so imagine a random Croatian trying to tell you everything they know about Tennessee. You're more likely to get a better answer in a larger coastal city or near a college than middle america (or Texas).

The folks in this video knew more about Ireland than I would have expected, given the pitiful lack of knowledge about the rest of the world taught in US public schools.
