3:07 They debuted in 2007 making them 2nd generation and are still together today, known as the Nations Girl Group, they are absolutely massive they are easily the biggest girl group in Korean history. Literally everyone knew them, from old to young. Didn’t matter if you lived in the furthest ,most remote village, you knew these girls. Their songs became instant hits and were always on top of charts. They were the only girl group who were able to compete with and even beat boy groups at physical sales. They had other groups delaying their comebacks when they dropped teasers for their MV that's how big they were. The timeline is this song came out in 2009, 2 years after their debut and catapulted them into superstardom. They continued to release hit after hit until 2017, they then decided to focus on solo activities but they promised they weren't disbanded, then we got a comeback in 2022 for the 15th anniversary. As for their Impact on K-pop 1. Girl Groups When they debuted, the industry was very male-dominated and girl groups weren't having the most success at the time. While they had moderate success in their debut, Gee and Genie placed them on the map and showed that they have a place in the industry right next to the male idols. 2. Colorful Skinny Jeans When Gee came out, an entire skinny jean craze ran through South Korea and reached across the world. The colorful jeans ended up becoming a statement piece of the early to mid 2010s. 3. Visual/Center Their Visual/Center Yoona basically popularized this. While there were kpop idols known for their beauty before, Yoona's beauty and charisma helped to catapult SNSD's success. She was starring in multiple CFs, photoshoots, had a hit drama, and was and still is well known for her beauty. To this day, she is still considered the idol that perfectly fits all off the beauty standards of the country and is one of the most popular examples for an ideal type. 4. Awards They are still, to this day, the only girl group ever to win the Disk Daesang (grand prize) at the Golden Disk Awards. 5. Japan They are the first Korean group to sell one million copies of their album in Japan. 6. International Success They are the first Korean girl group to win a western award (TH-cam Music Awards), where they defeated Psy, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber. 7. Digital and Physical Sales Back when they were active, their digital sales were on par with their physical sales. At the time, you had groups who were digital monsters, but their physical sales could not match up. For SNSD, they were able to do so for their entire career. 8. Individual Popularity Each member has branched out into other forms of entertainment and has achieved success by doing so. Besides Taeyeon and Yoona, each member has a successful career. Jessica has a million dollar fashion company. Sunny has placed herself in the Variety world and she also had a pretty successful radio show before. Tiffany was selling out concerts in America by herself and then went back to Korea to become a musical actress. Hyoyeon has been on almost every dancing show and almost all of her singles have chatted in the top 20 of the World Digital Songs Sales chart. Yuri is on a bunch of variety shows and acting in many dramas and movies. Sooyoung is also doin her thing in the acting industry. Seohyun as well. There are other kpop groups who have members that have successful solo careers. But take into consideration that all NINE of them are successful. Not four or five, nine. That says something. Sound-wise they pretty much do it all, I can't think of any concept SNSD hasn't tried before. What's crazy is, they don't feel awkward constantly shifting their style at all. And the amount of mega hits released by them makes them truly irreplaceable, their discography is top tier. Also since you are Army, V and Jin mentioned that the first album they bought was Girls' Generation Gee with V saying Koreas best musician is Girls' Generation. V's also friends with some of the members too.
Girls Generation is THE Girl group. They are the Nations Girl Group and like a national treasure haha ,, their debut song ‘Into The New World’ is always played during protests/marches and parades, it’s a very important song in Korea. I personally love ‘Mr.Mr’, ‘Genie’ & ‘You Think’ a lot :)
SNSD is the k-pop group with the biggest impact in the industry for sure. All these girl groups exist today because they paved the way. The leader, Taeyeon is also very active as a solo artist if you want to check her out, I suggest songs like INVU, I, Spark Other SNSD songs are MrMr, I got a boy, All Night, and their latest comeback: Forever one. No they do not have a cutesy concept, they went through every concept possible throughout their careers and Gee was very early on when they were still teens hence the more cutesy, less mature concept.
every member is a household name in korea. SNSD now are like if spice girls all stayed relevant and some became huge movies stars, tv stars, and top singers. They're a treat to get into, have fun!
1) the video is 4k because SM (the company) reuploaded remastered vids for all their old mvs. 2) im really surprised you never heard that song since you mentioned you were 18, it was EVERYWHERE! 3) they are no longer active as a whole group, most of the members debuted solo!
This is the song that got me into Kpop back in 2009. It was huge all around Asia, so big that it made it to TH-cam’s recommended page in America which was fairly new back then and where I found it. It was the first song by a girl group to make 100 million views.
in the description of the video it says it was orignially uploaded in 2009, but Remastered in 2022. 2nd gen kpop had 360p videos with no subtitles, lol
Omg, I was obsessed with that song when I was a teenager 😭 and it's still so good! makes me wanna jump up and dance. Really a timeless classic. Idk if it's the popping colors or what but old kpop girl group songs always make me so freaking happy
You mention "having a feeling like when you first listened to Twice". Well, that is totally understandable as Twice was created by JYP as a copy of Girls' Generation, to try and cash in on their success.
SNSD is the reason there are photo cards included in physical album packages, no joke. Also, they’re the first kpop group male or female to perform on American national late night and national morning shows in 2012. They are kpop essentially 👑
It got me all emotional 😢 i'm a 2008 kpop girlie and Girls' Generation was my fave girlsgroup until Jessica left (in 2014). Then i prioritized BTS, but Taeyeon (the lead vocal) is still my fave singer of all time. She's so so so talented.
YES! My first girl group! Yes, they are still active, and they were probably THE BIGGEST girl group in South Korea. Just a few days ago, their debut song "Into the New World" was played at a SK pride parade.
Just had their 17th anniversary. Please cover their discography. So famous, Queens of Kpop. Also, go year by year to watch them grow up. So much talent! All doing so much… ty ty 💕💖💕
I'm late to the party. Lots of great comments in here. I am an older American guy who discovered Kpop through Girl's Generation back in 2011. They became the love of my life during a very hard time in my life. I will always be grateful for the joy they brought me. Girls Generation is the gold standard in vocals for Kpop. Their songs and choreography are used by most companies to train their artist with. They are the example that every group after them has strived for. Third generation group Twice was purposely designed to try and be the "next" Girl's Generation. I doubt there will ever be another girl group with this much talent that is loved this much.
Fun Facts: "Girls' Generation" is a modern translation of their Korean name, "So Nyuh Shi Dae" (Romanized transliteration), shortened to "SNSD" and/or "Soshi". The literal (formal) translation is "Age of Maidens", which the members hated because it wasn't "cool". SNSD fans are known as 'SONE' (pronounced "So Won" or "So One" which means "wish" in Hangul but is also interpreted as meaning 'One with Soshi' ). The fandom name was not settled until late 2009 with the release of "Tell Me Your Wish" which is better known as "Genie" . SNSD also didn't have an official light-stick until October 2018! Origins, impact and success of 'Gee': It was originally supposed to be a 'B-side' on their 2009 album. The intended title track was "Dancing Queen' which used the music (which SM licensed) from Duffy's 'Mercy' but with original Korean lyrics. However, Duffy released 'Mercy' to great success shortly before SM planned to release Girl's Generation's 'version' ( the MV was already fully edited and 'in the can', so SM had to find something else, to avoid commercial and possibly legal conflicts ( I'm unclear what the EXACT problem was, but obviously if everything was otherwise okay. 'Dancing Queen' would still have looked like a 'rip-off', or 'sloppy-seconds' to the general public) ... and interestingly SM management thought Gee was kind of crappy ("too juvenile") but went with it pretty much out of desperate necessity. . . Significantly, TH-cam was bought by Google in 2007, so by 2009, along with development of 'proper' internet speeds, it had become a familiar (but still rapidly growing) global public-access media platform, and South Korea at the time had pretty much the fastest generally available internet connections in the world. Because of this fortunate circumstance K-pop's 2nd Generation were fortuitously placed to reach far beyond Korea and its closest national neighbors. So 'Gee 'was released instead of 'Dancing Queen'...and became an instant hit in Korea, but then also in Japan ( the world's 2nd largest national music market), the rest of Asia, and thus made its way to 'the West' too. And it wasn't just a catchy pop song, the MV as you surmised, launched the worldwide 'colored skinny-jeans' fashion and the 'mannequin challenge' trends. 'Gee' won 1st Place on the Korean music TV show Music Bank for 9 consecutive weeks...a new record of wins for ANY Korean artist (since then, only beaten by Psy in 2013 with 10 wins and, I think, BTS a few years later). It was awarded "Song of The Year' in Korea, and later, 'Song of the Decade' . In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked 'Gee' as #1 of the "100 Greatest Songs in K-Pop History". SNSD inspired most of the 3rd and 4th Generation girl groups and their members. Many of them successfully auditioned to become trainees by specifically singing Girl's Generation songs. SNSD's 2007 debut song, "Into The New World" was used by other agencies to determine if their new Girl Groups were 'debut-ready', because 'ITNW' demands a very tough combination of vocals and choreography. Consequently, SNSD were described as "the 'textbook" of Girl Groups...and not just for that performance, but because of their collective (and individual) skills, teamwork, consistency, their range as performers, and their humility and personalities. SNSD are "The Idols' Idol" (male or female) and for all the other superlative titles they've been acknowledged with over the years, since about 2015, I think they've been most commonly identified simply as "The Legendary SNSD" . More than any other group, SNSD lead the way in making K-pop the global genre it is today, from which contemporary groups have benefitted. And despite the obvious talents and hard work of contemporary Girl Groups who have beaten SNSD in sales and MV views, I'm pretty sure no other single Girl Group has yet matched them in artistic awards. There is an expression in the K-Pop and Korean entertainment industry in general, which is: "If you don't know SNSD, then you don't know K-pop" because they were and still are, the most influential group in K-Pop history...and that's not fan hyperbole, that's an opinion of not just the Korean music/entertainment industry, but of, for-instance, Rolling Stone magazine. There's so much more to know about them, but I'll leave it there for now. Hope you find this informative....and I hope you look further into the group.
This song is chirpy, cutesy, and I hate it, but I also have to concede that playing it is a necessary part of exploring the SNSD phenomenon. I prefer the later (2012 on) songs much more.
they participate in a contest to become an all girls band. once they win the contest they are active for a full year until the next competition happens then they hand the reigns over to the next group that wins the following competition. normally they would usually switch between doing an all girls group followed by an all boys group then girls group again. unless they are 2 separate competitions one that covers the all girls group and the other all boys group. the groups usually count 10 to 14 members.
3:07 They debuted in 2007 making them 2nd generation and are still together today, known as the Nations Girl Group, they are absolutely massive they are easily the biggest girl group in Korean history.

The Korean Nation's Girlgroup, please more Girls Generation!!
I love their debut song. ‘Into the new world’ and ‘Genie’ and ‘Kissing you’
This song is literally a founding Pillar of the Kpop industry

Lead vocals, the way Taeyeon evolved from a background Idol in the group that could sing ,to a nation treasure singer.
I prayed for days like these 🙏🙏 Pls more Girls generation

So nostalgic 😭😭
Girls generation always seems to have a comeback when the world needs them the most. (2021 was their most recent I believe)
in the description of the video it says it was orignially uploaded in 2009, but Remastered in 2022. 2nd gen kpop had 360p videos with no subtitles, lol
Oh this is historic. THIS song and THIS group were my introduction to Kpop. My heart is happy every time I hear this song.
When I was in high school, SNSD is the biggest k-pop girl group.
This was the first K-pop song I ever heard. It’s the song that propelled me down my K-pop journey all those years ago.
Omg, I was obsessed with that song when I was a teenager 😭 and it's still so good! makes me wanna jump up and dance. Really a timeless classic.

YES! My first girl group!
Yes, they are still active, and they were probably THE BIGGEST girl group in South Korea. Just a few days ago, their debut song "Into the New World" was played at a SK pride parade.
I recommend you to react to 'Into the New World' (their debut) and 'Run Devil Run' or 'Genie'. All of these songs very different from one another.
2nd Gen
Also, yes girls generation was huge at the time. 'Oh' is another song from them that was super popular! And I also remember 'the boys'
A few of them are now kdrama actresses.
I believe they had a reunion a couple of years ago
Just had their 17th anniversary. Please cover their discography. So famous, Queens of Kpop. Also, go year by year to watch them grow up. So much talent! All doing so much… ty ty 💕💖💕
I have heard Girls Generation before. I like their songs Girls Generation, Into the New World, Say Yes, Trick, Honey, and Telepathy.
I'm late to the party. Lots of great comments in here. I am an older American guy who discovered Kpop through Girl's Generation back in 2011. One of the best vocal group in SK ❤
2nd Gen kpop was so much fun and this song become such a meme.
Just my opinion, but they are the greatest girl band ever!!! They are the nation's girl group!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
gee fue mi primer acercamiento al kpop por agosto del 2010 y desde entonces nunca más deje de buscar más y más de kpop
fun fact, the boy at the beginning is choi minho from SHINee!!
please react to 2NE1, they are 2gen kpop queens as well !! ❤️
I highly recommend "I Am The Best" "Fire" and "I Love You"
I LOVE GIRLS' GENERATION WITH ALL MY HEART 🥺🥺🥺
you're gonna flip when you watch #Genie
They have a crazy amount of great, like I mean properly great, songs. Lion Heart is my Favorite.
