Gee was awarded Song of The Year, and later Song of the Decade. It started the 'Mannequin challenge' and created the worldwide "colored skinny jean' fashion trend has beaten since). Yet GEE WASN"T SUPPOSED TO BE THEIR COMEBACK SINGLE! It was supposed to be a track called "Dancing Queen" which licensed the music from Duffy's 'Mercy' (while the 'DQ' lyrics were original), but then Duffy released the original in February 2008, with international sales and critical success, so SM shelved 'Dancing Queen' ( even the 'DQ' MV was already complete, so SM 'ate' the cost of that) and had to pick a replacement...which was Gee...even though SM thought "the song was childish and the melody weak". 'Gee' was really the first K-Pop 'Global' hit. It's popularity extended beyond the typical pop consumer demographic of Teens and Twenties/Thirties, to kids and 40/50 year-olds. Dancing Queen (the song and MV) was eventually released in 2013 as a 'teaser' for the "I Got A Boy' comeback, which won TH-cam's first MV of the Year award, and which also became a global hit. SNSD paved the way for K-Pop's current global popularity, and for many other reasons they were and remain the most influential group in K-Pop history
