Absolutely genius restricter plays bypass. I remember reading that Max Moseley (iirc) said something like engineers should be getting an award for the little cheat. Openly impressed.
Fun fact: these retailed for $99k NZD on release in NZ, but the release of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, with its retail price of $64,990 NZD, prompted Toyota to carve $30k off the price to sell it for $69k in NZ!
And now that car is on my driveway. Well, the standard version anyway. An st185 with a grey leather interior, Nakamichi stereo and a weird air purifier thingy on the roof lining. 136 off the production line...what a car.
Just purchased another one recently. A fully custom suspension, lowered with race spec breaks. Racing exhaust and roughly 510bhp. At 1.2 bar of boost. The car is nuts😂
Never had the chance to get my hands on one of those - but did once own the much less powerful non-turboed "twin" 1996 series 2 Celica - only had the 3S-FE 2.0L but was a manual... slightly improved with a few teaks here and there 😉 - but out of all the cars I've owned over the years - I actually really miss that one! ❤
@@ztikmaen I know! A lot of people were back in the day. All very similar in their own unique way. I like the coupe styling of the celica vs the lancer and Impreza sedans though
You should review a Caldina GT-T. Remember, they were only ever common (if that) in Japan, Russia, and here in NZ. Most people from outside of those 3 countries would've never even heard of them.
Great review, a real treat of a vid! Certainly an icon, and one of the really cool Japanese cars from the nineties. I can't say I've seen many in real life!
Great Video! I absolutely adore this car and plan to buy one soon, if the stars align xD You said @ 2:16, that 2500 Toyota st205 GT4s were made. However 2500 Homologation models were made in 1994, named Toyota Celica st205 GT4 WRC. The total of GT4s made is around 20.000 (I believe) from 1994 to 1999. The Homologation models (WRC) have all the plumbing required to activate the anti-lag system, a water spray bar and pump for the front intercooler and a basic water injection system from factory, which the other models don't come with from the factory. Not all 1994 made models are of the WRC variant. The 1997 variant you reviewed is the last facelift variant, which has some minor tweeks and a sturdier engine block.
This is correct. I was going to give the same correction if I didn't see it here. More detail: The ST205 chassis numbers are sequential, and the highest one is 0013380, so there were not more than 13,380 of them made, including the WRC editions. Since that's significantly below your 20,000 estimate I thought you might want to know. It also tapers off significantly towards the latter years. They made under 300 of them in the final 1999 year.
RE: Turbo lag, I'm told thats just a matter of driving the car differently. Rally drivers downshift early and blip the throttle a lot to keep the engine in the mid revs even when not using the power at the wheels, so that they are always in the power band. There's a skill to it.
Anti-car movement really strong these days! I'd try not to piss green people off, the chances of them getting their extreme policies taken seriously by governments in the future is too high.
Yeah it's a very confidence inspiring car. Video does make it appear I was going quicker though perhaps, was never getting close to traction limit, especially in a car that's not mine
That is absolutely not a stock turbocharger which is why boost comes on so late. I’ve been building these cars since they were still new from the factory. The factory W2A intercooler will support up to 500WHP.
Unfair comparison seeing as these got banned then toyota didn't compete until homologation rules were gone and they could rally the boring corolla. Also the first gc8 type ra with it's adjustable center diff was awesome. Evo 5 and 6 are my favorite evo for sure but the ayc wasn't a rally diff it was for the street
@@KiwiCarLife The CT20B looks very similar. Twin entry turbos have two snail "scroll" chambers and are usually called twin scroll. Yeah I thought all the time it was actually twin turbo as in legacy...

Venting all the turbo pressure is nice theatrics...but causes turbolag once you put your foot down again, and run extremely rich because you vented metered air. Think also boost controller settings need work, because 4500rpm till boost on a the small factory turbo makes no sense, especially not on custom piping. Does it even use the MAP sensor, or is it just on "full send" mode and spraying and praying...

That’s not a factory turbocharger. Factory turbochargers make 320WHP at 21PSI. That turbocharger flows much more air and takes far longer to spool.
