If my timing mark on my camshaft lines up but the one on the crankshaft does not , how do i line up the crankshaft timing mark ? Do I take off the timing belt and turn the crank until the number 1 cylinder is all the way up ?

    • @CharlesAndCars

That's hard to say. Is it close (a tooth or two off)? or is it way off.

I am glad you made this two part series, but for some reason when you used used your air impact on the crank bolt it worked perfectly however, I had a herculean struggle getting mine off and every time I line up my marks for both crank and cam (rotating them clockwise x2) when I attempt to remove it it wont budge and add insult to injury it'll throw off my marks. This is incredibly frustrating any advice for this newbie shadetree mechanic would be most appreciated guys.

Sometimes getting the crank bolt to come loose can be difficult. Not sure where you are in the process. I'm not sure if you've already replaced the belt or your trying to get the bolt out initially.

@@CharlesAndCars I have taken the bolt off and replaced belt, water pump, and tensioner. I'm on part 2 of reinstalling the harmonic balancer and putting everything together. but the bolt is tough to remove once again.

I wish I knew why didn’t you remove the Motor Mount 1st before removing the Serpentine belt

Charle it is of about 6 teeth past the timing mark on the crank.

So, next comes the obvious question.. How did it get so far off?

If it dropped a valve seat, pull all the spark plugs. You might be able to see signs of debris in the cylinder that failed.

This engine did drop a valve seat about a year or so later. Awful lot of noise and 0 compression in that cylinder...

@@CharlesAndCars Mine did also! #3 cylinder. Piston ended up as shrapnel in the oil pan. The connecting rod bent in four separate directions and still did not break. The rod small end put a small mark in #3 cylinder which required a sleeve to be installed. I made one mistake in the repair. I just pressed the upper cam seal into its bore and I should have used a sealant on the outer circumference of the seal to hold it in better as it came out of place and oil splashed everywhere. Oh well, live and learn. It still runs great! It dropped the valve seat at 174K kms.

Teeth on timing belt are torn

    • @CharlesAndCars

The 2.0 SPI isn't an interference engine so you should be okay, but probably need to pull the plugs and check to ensure there was no damage. These engines also have a habit of dropping valve seats and that's something that would need to be checked as well. Question is what caused the teeth on the belt to be torn? Age or did it drop a seat and lock things up?
