  • Join Keith Christiansen, the John Pope-Hennessy Chairman of the Department of European Paintings, and guest curator Carlo Falciani, Professor of Art History at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, for a tour of The Medici: Portraits and Politics, 1512-1570. This stunning exhibition features over 90 works in a wide range of mediums, from paintings, sculptural busts, medals, and carved gemstones to drawings, etchings, manuscripts, and armor. Included are works by the period's most celebrated artists, from Raphael, Jacopo Pontormo, and Rosso Fiorentino to Benvenuto Cellini, Agnolo Bronzino, and Francesco Salviati.

    I am loving the fact the original painting “Portrait of a Young Man” by Bronzino is a part of the Medici Exhibit at The Met..
    I own, by serendipity, a reproduction of this original hanging at the Met..
    I found my reproduction in a thrift shop in Chapel Hill, NC in the late 90’s..
    I Love The Met..

    I've been to The Met several times when I lived on the east coast and it's one of most fantastic places I've ever been. I wish I had had more time to explore all of the exceptional artwork inside when I was there but it's always thrilling to learn more about the history of these pieces. Thank you to all of the staff who was able to come together in a difficult time to create the exhibit for the world to enjoy - either in person or virtually.

    I went to The Met last week and was so overwhelmed (in a pleasant way) by the vast selection of art that I didn't realize that this particular collection was new and so rare. I saw "The Medici" but passed right along. One should really set aside several hours to walk this museum and take in the many masterpieces. I'll be back soon I hope.

    The Exhibition is wonderful and very meaningful for everyone, but probably especially for someone, who like me, equated the Medici greatness mostly with Lorenzo the Magnificent. This is from a later chapter, associated with Cosimo I. I highly recommend buying the excellent exhibition catalog, studying it deeply and visiting the Exhibition more than once. I plan to. By the way, we visited it early on the opening day, and the line was very reasonable - we waited probably 10 or 15 minutes

    I have a question. When you do a lecture at the MET do you preface it with self congratulations your patrons or do you just present the lecture like they do at Christies et al, when they are teaching people about the spotlighted category?
    For future reference do that when you are solely playing up to the patrons at a function but not in a video for the public. We spent 4 minutes listening to nothing of merit followed by a rush through a series of generic statements.
    Do your homework when you are presenting the public with insights into art and culture.

      I have worked at both Christie's Auction House and NYC area museums. Auction houses and museums are completely different entities. Museums rely on private and public money so that have to thank donors, etc. People are usually interested in the scholars that make up a museum's staff so it is appropriate to discuss a retiring curator and mention his contributions.

    • @stevemattfis
      @stevemattfis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might I suggest you run credit names in print and for any who wish to be addressed by the host directly that those be the ones with the most support offered to a department. It encourages people who might feel they deserve to stand out to assist you with more support. It saves time, gets the name recognition and allows more time for the information to be shared. I would also like to suggest anyone publicly speaking to show they love what they do. The sense of investment in quiet was the most palpable part of this video.

    Unfortunately this is a very old story that persists today in which corporate powers appropriate the beauty that artists create in order to cleanse and hide their sins of exploitation of not only artists and art ,but of an entire unjust economic system that harms the vast majority. Do you think that it is just chance that a huge corporation (Bank of America) sponsors this exhibition ?
