‘Great trade for Ottawa': Pounder and Button react to Linus Ullmark trade | Jay on SC

  • While all eyes were on Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Senators went out and acquired Linus Ullmark for Joonas Korpisalo, Mark Kastelic, and a 2024 first round pick. TSN Hockey analyst Cheryl Pounder and TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button join Jay Onrait to react to the trade, and what the future looks like for the Senators.

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fans of his new team can only hope that that happens. Key will also be, for the Sens to:
      - qualify for postseason play, have reasonably competent goaltending from at least two goalies, which this past season the Canucks did from Thatcher Demko and Casey DeSmith, particularly important because unlike Connor Hellebuyck, Demko had become injury-prone following the Canucks' 2021 North Division stint
      - win in the postseason, have a goalie who can stand on his head if needed to give them a chance to win games, something that this postseason with the Canucks Arturs Silovs did even with that team having lost its conference semifinal in seven games to the ultimate Stanley Cup finalist Oilers

    So happy for the sens. Their defence last year wasn’t great but it wasn’t that bad either and that terrible goaltending really killed them, so i truly think that simply having a goalie that makes all the saves he should make/being consistent will make all the difference for a possible playoffs year.

      Like the guys on tsn said this morning .it’s two birds with one stone. Would have costed a buyout of 1.3 for 8 years and then find a new goalie. Did all that with the 25th and a fringe player who wanted a change. Even if ullmark doesn’t resign I love this trade as a sens fan

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Defense for the Sens no doubt was a problem although not great goaltending hurt them too. The 2020 postseason for the Canucks featured Jacob Markstrom and Thatcher Demko having shared goaltending duties but after that Demko would become the Canucks' main goalie. Relying so heavily on Demko, during the Canucks' 3 seasons that had ended in April 2023, had only taken them so far although it didn't help that few of their backups had been any good, with Braden Holtby (2021 North Division), Jaro Halak (2021-22 season), Spencer Martin (2 seasons ended April 2023, placed on waivers late last September) and Collin Delia (2022-23) having at best been inconsistent and at worst sieves.

    Sometimes you hava to wait a few years to determine who got the better of the trade. I am a Bruins fan but never a fan of Ulmark who always put up good numbers in regular season but not in the playoffs.
    Korpasolo could be a good second goalie, Kostalic is only 25, big centre, good in faceoffs and not afraid to drop the gloves. We needed a guy like that. The key will be 1st round pick. Who will be remaining at 24th spot ? Maybe in 2 years we will look back and remember that we drafter a first line player for Ulmark and we will say we did well in that trade.

  • @Skynexstar

    • @DBeau73
      @DBeau73 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Which makes the deal even more surprising. When they first talked about this trade, Chychrun and the 7th overall was talked as being the trade baits. So the 25th, Kastelic and Korpisalo was a surprise. Specially they wanted to get rid of Korpisalo and get a better goalie. Overall, this was like a the best deal ever for the Sens since they checked 2 boxes in one trade.
      Now Staios still has plenty of work to resign Pinto and think that he's looking to trade Chychrun.

The Sens, Wings, possibly MTL maybe sabres are getting better and closing in on Leafs. I love the team thr Sens are building. Did they lose a ton last year yes but they are building a solid core at the right positions and I think they can start to make a playoff push

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Leafs this past season had a goalie in Ilya Samsonov who had been such a sieve he had cost to Leafs points in the regular season and 2 playoff games during which he had allowed multiple ugly goals. Not-so-good goaltending had during the 3 seasons that had ended in April 2023 cost the Canucks points in the regular season, with none of Braden Holtby, Jaro Halak, Spencer Martin (the last of whom the Canucks would waive last September without his having played in a preseason game that same month for that team) and Collin Delia having been particularly good backups to what would become a very injury-prone Thatcher Demko.
      The Canucks' 2022-23 season featured such a poor start they would be well out of the playoff picture by December. They had some good players but not really a good team, something that would change dramatically the following season with more competent goaltending and defense corps. There is hope for the Sens for this coming season but there's no doubt they need to get off to a start much more like the 2023-24 Canucks than not.

    Horrible trade for Boston Sweeney is a joke needs to follow him to Ottawa a 5th line forward goon who can’t skate and a goalie with a 3.79 goals against this trade made us the laughing stock of the NHL
