In truth Pope Niccolò II appointed Roberto the Guiscard sovereign of Southern Italy as feudal lord of the Pope. So the Kingdom of Sicily (which at the time included all of Southern Italy and not only the Island) was formally a fief of the papacy until 1800 even if in fact he was totally sovereign.
@@DejvidSpanjolli That was just in theory. There are many examples of European monarchs formally svearing "allegiance" to the Pope as their feudal overlord, but in reality this had no effects on them or their countries, nor were any of the Popes crazy enough to think that this meant that they really owned them. So including southern Italy here just doesn't make any sense.
I'm descendant of Damasus II! I'm brazilian, and all Damasus or Damaso in the world are one family, so everyone that have Damaso or Damasus in aftername is descendant of this Pope

Papacy never conquered southern Italy, and neither Avignon, but the pope moved there for about 70 years, so it's a little bit different. This video is very misinforming
@@ludovicotriscari4536 It might be hard to tell but southern Italy is coloured in a light yellow, it wasn't annexed by the Papal States but under their influence

@@88kjk75 you can see 2 different shades of yellow, the pope did not control all of that land at the time, it was more like a vassal of the pope
@@88kjk75 Yeah. Southern Italy was effectively under e.g. Spanish control for chunks of that time.
