When Achille Ratti was elected pope, one of the things he said he wanted to do was resolve the Vatican situation. He said part of the reason he took the name Pius was because he wanted the Italian question that started under a Pius to be resolved by a Pius.
Part of me wanted to include this story, its just such a baller move. The issue was I couldn't quite remember if it was actually true, or a cool legend, and to be completely honest, I forgot to do the research and check.
I knew it was Mussolini the one who solved it! Just wondering though, couldn't the Pope accept the Vatican becoming autonomous part of Italy? You know, like how Mount Athos works.
I think a key difference between the Vatican and Mount Athos is that the Popes had been completely independent rulers for a thousand years, while that wasn't really the case for Eastern Patriarchs. Also, the Popes knew that Italy wouldn't forcibly take the Vatican, as it would've outraged Italy's mostly Catholic population, so then why would they give in if they didn't need to?
The Vatican state exists due to Benito Mussolini, who, after a meeting with the pope, decided to allot the Catholic church the one square mile that is the Vatican state and city.
If they somehow managed to unify the rest of the peninsula and defeat Sardinia while somehow not drawing the ire of the French or the Habsburgs, then history probably wouldn't change all too much. I mean, for Italy, that would be huge if it was unified under a democratic republic rather than a monarchy, but outside of Italy, I doubt most people would give a sh*t.
I might add that Mussolini was also an atheist, coherent with his background as a revolutionary socialist leader, which is another fact often omitted from school books. It was a good deal for both sides. Mussolini ensured the Church would not object too much to his fascist state, and the decadent Catholic Church has a theme-park territory to this day, a feat well beyond this age, their means and their abilities
It never ceases to amaze me that in so far as can be said of a Fascist Dictator, Mussolini was the least abhorrent, but also, it always messes with me When like the Nazis or Fascists were on the correct side of an issue. Like the Nazis and the US being the first people to listen to Iran telling the UN that it was *literally never* called Persia, it was always Iran.
I think you should make more videos about africa, asia or south america because there are more people out there dont know things about them and you can get more viewers from there espacially if you make about india or turkey lol
So, all the Popes mentioned out loud in this video were called Pius. Coincidence?!?! Yeah... probably.
I figured they were like QEII, hundreds of years of the same person

Its His-story not our History
Pope: “Don’t come here or ill excommunicate you”
Italian government: “Ok” *sends in Jewish soldier*

💀
Italy: Admit your defeat and surrender!
The Pope behind the vatican walls: No I will never surrender! Also you don't exist!
Need more of these, I’m obsessed watching all your videos!
Thanks, that's cool of you to say! More are on the way!
Mussolini actually became Prime Minister in 1922, by 1925 was able to bend the Constitution a and pass new laws that made him dictator.
4:36 I DID NOT EXPECT THIS TWIST WHATSOEVER 😳😳😳
Always enjoy your interesting commentaries and this was no exception. Looking forward to next one.

Good work sir
Look interesting, but I am going elsewhere, the volume here is too low for me. Other sites don't have this problem.

To the west of the Italian Capital. Definitely not in the center of the Italian Capital.
That's a level of pedantry I can appreciate.
What an amazing video
I now k why they weren't just conqured
The Catholic Church had massive popular support 100 years ago
Imagine if the short-lived Roman Republic united Italy instead.
History would've come full circle.

He was all over the place.
Didn't know Andrew Tate's brother was into history.
