  • Start up and Departure of an R-66 turbine helicopter from Cotswolds Airport to land at a Private Landing Zone- at Whatley Manor.
    Helicopter is operated and fantastically maintained by the team at HQ Aviation ltd
    The helicopter is new- with a lovely Garmin 1060 TXi fitout, and helicopter autopilot - HeliSas
    What do you think about helicopter autopilot- comments below!
    The video was filmed using a Garmin Virb camera - link below:

      Well flight training at the moment is on pause because of the corona virus in the UK- but you can certainly keep researching into flying - watching videos - deciding what’s Helicopter to learn to fly on- that matches your budget, trying to understand how Helicopters work , for example !

      AB Helicopters Ltd Thank you. I’ve actually done a lot of research and understand what I need to go through and what I need to do in order to obtain a helicopter license. It’s an exciting career to invest and I’m looking to make it into my day job.

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely rightly so!!! That’s a key component that you can’t see, it’s the furthest part away from the cockpit and arguably the most vulnerable ! There is a reason many HEMS operators use ducted tails - think EC135 , NOTAR - ie MD902 , or high mounted tails , like EC145

    How long have you been flying? You do a great job.
    As someone working towards my commercial license do you have any recommendations in building time? It's the biggest thing I'm worried about cause so many places have such high requirements and I'm trying not to go the CFI route from the start(maybe later down the line) cause that's another 15k or so down the drain.
    Thanks for the video nonetheless!

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Astro,
      Thanks for getting in touch . I have been flying for over 15 years or so now, and still love it! Really good question- a low hour cpl can sometimes get jobs flying tours in tourist hotspots or get some time doing cherry drying etc in certain areas , but it is seasonal. The cfi route does allow for you to quickly build Hours whilst improving your own handling skills,but it’s not for everyone ! When your building hours pre cpl, I went and got an FAA IR, it was a good use of the time, more expensive than just flying on your own, but more productive !

    Awesome flight just one concern: Your approach looked a little touch and go? High rate of decent with a low airspeed WILL produce vortex ring state !
    You were drooping airspeed too fast and was to high on your initial approach (27 kts and dropping more than 500-700 ft per minute what seemed to me like a forced landing) in my opinion that was a 100% go around especially of those trees😵
    Stay out of the death arch and within the limitations of the machine
    (Lucky for you the R66 might have helped you out there with some exstra power )
    Be safe out there fellow Pilots!

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there
      Thanks for taking the time out to post on the video, appreciate the input! Really good points made- perhaps a good topic for another video !. The flight was many years back, so I can’t really comment on it more than what you can see , though I recall it being a tight spot to get into , and being accuteley aware of the Vortex ring possibility, with the idea of performing a relatively slow, shallow approach, which meant , whilst increasing the time in the HV curve , meant that there were no late, large power changes, and therefore no surprises once ETL had been lost.

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Looking at the video, the airspeed drops below both 30kts from 11:00 onwards , and by about 11:20, about 50 ft had been lost - from 300ft down to 250ft, so perhaps a RoD between 200-250 per minute, so, I think just clear of the conditions for vortex ring

    question - is the rotor RPM higher in a turbine than a piston engine?

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a comparison between the R44 and R66, they both have the same rotor rip speed - 481 mph or 705 feet per minute , and the same size rotor diameter - so exactly the same,
      The rotor speed is not so dependent on the engine- it will be optimised for the aerodynamics - and the link between the engine and rotor will be designed for maximum engine power and best overall rotor efficiency via the gear box reduction ratio

  • @brendanredler3666
    @brendanredler3666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's the label on your power gauge? R is rotor RPM, I assume...what's N2 stand for? Something in Newtons?

    • @ABHelicopters
      @ABHelicopters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there- the N2 is the power turbine speed- the free turbine at the back of the engine. During normal flight- the two needles should be superimposed - however if there was an engine failure - there would be a split between the rotors - which should keep turning in a successful autorotation, and the N2 which would drop if the engine stops.

    • @brendanredler3666
      @brendanredler3666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ABHelicopters Thanks for the reply! I understand that it's power and that the scales are set so that the Rotor RPM and Power are even furing normal flight...just never noticed that it was labeled N2 before and was curious as to what it could stand for.
