This channel really hones in on a previously underserved audience. It assumes you have your basics covered, have a little bit of taste, but aren't a bonkers jazz encyclopedia. Hits me right where I'm at. Long live the unpointy guitars.
You get me! I figure there's tons of great guitar channels covering the basics, and many more covering the usual heroes. I like stuff that's a little out there, and it's really satisfying to find so many like-minded people!
Totally. Really helps move people along when you can put the ideas in the context of what they like listening to. I imagine there's a fairly decent contingent of your subscribers who cut their teeth on a lot of the classic guitar heroes but whose tastes mellowed, matured, expanded over time, and this is the first high quality channel I've found that seems to have "grown up" with those players. Keep it up my dude.
That's what I love to hear, Stefan! It's a joy for me to play, and even more a joy to share these things and help people get a little more out of their instrument!
Thanks so much Rick! That means so much to me - I know what it is to get goosebumps from music! To think that my playing has done that is really humbling!
When you got to the "You're gonna reap just what you sow" part, I got tears in my eyes. I didn't even cry when my father died last year. To say that you're talented is a frivolous understatement. Good luck to you, man.
That means so much to me, Jeffrey! I totally get where your coming from. This year has been full of tragedy and loss for my family as well. You never know when the feelings are gonna rise to the surface. I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Communicating emotion is what it's all about, so it truly humbles me to know my video has that power!

Such a peaceful and beautiful song. Eric your playing is always amazing and spot on. Then when you explain in layman terms how you do it really helps out a lot. Thanks so much for all your posting! Peace my brother ✌🏻

Can't thank you enough; just such a complete pleasure to watch, listen, and learn. Your playing and explanations are clean and to the point, at a nice easy pace...and to top it off I confess I did not know this very beautiful song 'til now, and I've always loved any Lou that I've heard. Damn, what gorgeous music. Thanks for playing it for us.
Thanks so much, man! I try to present songs and ideas that are interesting and meaningful to me, in a straightforward and sensible way :-) I always love to hear that my style and choices resonate so well with people!
Thanks so much Malcom! I figure there's so already much good information out there for beginners, so I hop right in there with stuff I think is cool :-)
Beautiful rendition. Just got a mustang and delved back into Lou Reed and the Velvet Ground a few a weeks ago. Perfect timing finding this! Love your content
Part of its greatness is that it is not only a juxtaposition of "carefree lyric and sinister harmony," but also of carefree harmony and sinister lyric. Anyway, great job again.
Well, Lou was one of my idols and the reason I picked up guitar and I was a huge fan of this song long before I ever saw Trainspotting, but was glad it was used so successfully. This is, without a doubt, the finest guitar version I have seen and I can't wait to learn it! Thank you so SO much for this!!!
Dude man!! I have been watching all of your videos and have learned a ton. Wilco, VU, Television, Steve Cropper, Tom Waits, Niel Young, Cohen, Pixies. Every time I stumble onto another video it's like it was made specifically for me haha. So nice to have content focused around music I love and not solely around guitar hero stuf. I love me some guitar heroes but it's the weird stuff that gets me feeling all sparkly. Keep it up man, you are doing amazing work!
This popped up on my homepage, and I love your take on this song (despite never hearing it before)! You definitely given me enough inspiration to learn your version and broaden my knowledge even further. Thanks, my man!
Eric that was just a spot on arrangement. You added your take while totally doing it justice. Great job. Now I have to figure out that transition with a piano chord no less. Keep up the good work and Thanks!
Great stuff as always. As others have said, you strike a nice balance between tone, technique, tips, and choice of material. Haven't seen Trainspotting but Transformer always one of my favorite albums, and Perfect Day a memorable lyric and melody. Nice job and thank you for taking the time to post it.
Wow. All I can say is that sounded beautiful. This channel has helped my playing in so many ways and also exposed me to a heap of songs I may never have come across before..cheers!
Thanks Craig! That makes me so happy to hear! I’m a guitar guy first, but I always really liked songwriters as opposed to guitarists. To me, the song is the thing!
Great job thanks for this! This is such a good interpretation of Lou's song. I love your use of double stops and playing off the chord. I really enjoyed and learned from this, Thank You.
This is so amazing! One of my favorite Songs on the OST of the Film Trainspotting. Blur - Sing is also a Masterpiece on that OST. Thanks Eric for this one!
You're freaking GREAT!! I love all of your videos man. I have been playing for 25+yrs and learn something from ya every time! Thank you for doing this and giving me reasons to pick up an old ax!;-p Keep it up man!!
Eric Haugen And PS, Mark Ribot is one of my personal heroes and you're one of the ONLY other guitar players I've heard out there that understands how genius he is!! Love it ALL!
Super helpful bro. I really appreciate the musical skills that you share with the planet. My 10 year old daughter is playing toms and marcs jockey full of bourbon thanks to your posts. Thankyou mate.
Best guitar channel on TH-cam. On top of the great lessons and song choices, you seem like a pretty swell guy. Like the kinda guy that might transcribe Beefheart's "Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles" for us...

Beautiful. I would really like to see you do some modern surf, like the Mermen. Seems like that would really be in your wheelhouse. Thanks for sharing your talents with these lessons.
Yeah! The Madeira, Aqualads, Slacktone all good too. My request would be something like "Sand" off Krill Slippin' by the Mermen. You already have the tone nailed.
That’s really lovely. I’m going to make this the next thing I learn when I get some time. I’ve got a fair approximation of the piano lines for satellite of love that will sit nicely next to it. Although it’s not as close as you’ve version of this. Which is why I keep coming back!
Meraviglioso arrangiamento. Beautiful! I am in tears . Great original arramgiament for a monumental song. The style remember a little Bill frisell? Anycase wonderfoul. Compliment
Thanks so much James! That's a great image to think of. I'm currently finishing up an EP of psychedelic rock stuff, but when I finish that I think I'm gonna put together an instrumental collection :-D
It's really beautiful, thanks for making this lesson. It took a month or so of practice for me, but I've got it down. I learned to work in the chords like you mention in the fiddly bit on the higher strings in the middle of the song. When I played it as you were, it didn't sound nearly as good as your demo. I thought maybe you were hybrid picking or doing something I couldn't make out. Well, I finally got around to downloading the backing track, and in that little section, the harmony was coming from a second guitar part in the track! I spent a while trying to figure that out. It was good ear training, anyway.
Well the deco arrived and it's just magic. It replaced an analogman KOT and for the sounds I like it's just the perfect drive pedal and of course the other functions are great too. Thanks for all your lessons!
Just picked up a copy of your tab for this. It's a bit above my powers at the moment, but something to work toward. Damn, that is a luminously beautiful rendition.
Thanks so much! Take your time with those tabs. I always think that even if you don't 100% accomplish the goal you set out for, you still make incremental progress on your guitar journey. Time spent with guitar is time well spent :-)

Thanks Eric for this lesson. Im really into chord melody stuff, and this lesson is really helpful for me to visualize the usable inversion of each particular chords. :)
Really lovely indeed. I'm about to purchase the pdf arrangements from your site, before that could you advise are the arrangements written in notes or tabs/chords? Thanks
It's all there! I use sibelius music notation software - the same program publishers use: www.erichaugenguitar.com/tab-store/perfect-day-by-lou-reed-guitar-arrangement
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks Eric, just got it, the pdfs are nice and clear. Now the hard work starts I'll try to follow the video closely hopefully will get somewhere soon! not as easy as it looks on paper it's the details of how you play that makes it flows
Such a beautiful song(great movie too!.... whoever decided on that song and that scene is a genius).... thanks man.... it is a sernester little change for sure and that is this weeks noodling sorted out.... gracias. One question... what is that wee blue pedal in between you Fuzzface & Deco?
Thanks Dave! That little switch is by saturn guitar works - it's a cheaper version of the strymon "favorite" switch. I have mine set up to kick my guitar into "Super Pursuit Mode" when it's time to take a solo :-D

sometimes I watch your videos while I procrastinate and I drop everything and play guitar. it's a bittersweet joy, thank you for the inspiration
Spot on. Watching this dude be mesmerising at guitar inspires me to pick it up and get better.
It's not Procrastination if you're playing!!! It's just filtering out all the distraction. ;-)

And T-Bone Burnett! Now that's a combo!
Awesome thanks Eric.... I like the "super pursuit" concept
That guitar sounds sweet ☺
Thanks Malcolm!
Some overdrive, a ribbon mic, and plenty of reverb go a long way!
Eric Haugen and someone that can make it happen ☺
you are really good
Thanks so much Guillermo!
I really appreciate it!
