Millipedes won't eat the eggs. They are detrivores and so will eat only fallen leaves and rotten wood. They also need their substrate to be as deep as they are long to properly molt. So you may want to add some..
I would however be worried about isopods if you have any in there. They are known to eat eggs, and even molting pedes / inverts. I'm a pede guy and we are always happy to see you in the Myriapod section on Arachnoboards.
Hey Petko, great video as always!
But please hear me out on this one
Please don´t use coco fiber for millipedes, they will die of impaction!
You should use the top layer of the soil from deciduous forests. AVOID conifer forests
Scrape away the leaves and take the top few centimeters of the soil. You should also mix in dead leaves in various states of decay (Oak and Beech), as well as with rotting wood (also form oak and Beech, I hope you know what I mean).
Also add quite a bit of calcium (best to use cuttlefish bone, just break it up in little pieces and mix it in)
You should use this mix for all millipedes, some species need more wood, some need more soil
If you want, you can also add live moss, they really love to eat it.
They also love lichen and algae that grows on twigs
Again: NO COCO FIBER, not even a little bit!
For the Tonkinbolus dollfusi (the species you have) I would recommend at least 15-20cm of substrate.
Your millipedes will love it and reproduce for you.
Impaction from coco fiber won't kill millipedes the lack the lack of the right minerals will, however, but the coco fiber its self is safe mixing it in with leaf litter and rotten wood with some cuddle fish bone and you shouldn't have a problem this has worked for breeding program so i dought its as fatal as you're saying it is .
also moss is also a good touch
millipedes actually get most of their nutrition from the substrate, that's their main food source and anything you put in otherwise (fruits and stuff) is usually secondary. They won't eat the eggs. But make sure the substrate is good for them
Millipedes need a deeper substrate than that, as you generally want the substrate as tall as they are long. You don't need it that deep, but you do need it deeper than you have in that enclosure. Maybe you could raise the substrate up a bit for them.
Yes, i would add atleast 5 cm of substrate
He keeps saying “very nice” and all I can think of is Borat
Fr
I'm really uneasy about cocofiber being the only substrate for the millipedes.
You might want to add someting like moss or similar to the vases with the bramble leaves (jungle nymph food). Else the milipedes might drown in there.
Perhaps you should set up a timelapse camera to observe all rehousing to observe the behaviour afterwards. Or maybe always transfer something from the old enclosure to the new one, so if the insect gravitates to the old stuff, maybe it needs time to "expand" its territory, or maybe there's something wrong with the enclosure. Just a thought, have no experience with insects whatsoever.
The millipedes may die when eating the coco fiber because they can't really stomach the fibers :/ So please be careful
if a dark den video starts "I have an idea" you know it'll be good
I did a little research and if millipedes dont have enough available food, they will eat small insects/insect eggs. If you feed them well then they should be fine but I ain't an expert so my advice might not be exactly correct. Although, I would suggest taking the millipedes out till the eggs have hatched.
Hey Petko, Miro's music is awesome! Looks like your channel is going to a new level with the new place and equipment! I look forward to watching your future videos!
if you make merch it should be a shirt with a tarantula on it that says "very nice"
even if they lay eggs it takes about a year to hatch
Communal enclosures are so cool!! I can't wait to see the new space and to see all the other upgrades and additions!
Hello dude, i watched quiet a lot of your videos lately. I really enjoy your passion about tarantulas and streaming thus the combination of them both is really entertaining. Keep goining, you are heading to a good way.
Thanks for the stuff you create, thanks for you croatian mentality from germany, brate!
You should start selling "The Dark Den" Tee Shirts, stickers, hoodies, pins, and junk. Tons of stickers. Mail them out and give them to fans who send you stuff. And pass them out while your traveling and encounter your many adoring fans.
we want them plus like mo' money...
You should totally get an orchid mantis! Or maybe a ghost. Orchids are beautiful!!
Your videos calm me down. It's very relaxing. Thanks for your content, Petko! See you again next time!
" I have an idea"
Me: oh no this won't be good
166k Subscribers....
200k video creeping closer....
Thats awesome.
Once your ants stop hibernating you should do an update on them and build a nice formicarium for them
You're already at 166k subs! I'm Soooo happy for you! The channel is growing So Fast! 💜💜💜
Hey Petko, I would put a few inches more substrate in for the millipedes because they love to burrow and need deep substrate. Especially in a communal set up so they have more room to hide from the nymphs if they get rowdy XD
Thanks for the band recommendation, I've subscribed to their channel and will be buying albums. Really love their sound :)
The starting was brilliant! I'm so glad I joined Patreon for you, It's great to see you with some new equipment. Peace.
The editing and transition effects are amazing as always lol
rodlav91 HE THREW THE SHIRT ON
RIP ur mantis and sling may there soul rest in piece and they will keep forever in our hearts and amazing setup for the millipedes and i cant wait until what u do next vid u make u always make me soo happy watching u do this :)
Hi Petko, thanks for the shout out on the Chaos Addict band. A new metal band for me to listen to. Also, keep up the great work on your vids and keep them coming, very enjoyable to watch as always.
i liked the intro, those first 3 seconds. it was funny and it fits to you and your stuff.
keep it up ;)
Absolutely love millipeds, thanks fir sharing, love your channel
nothing like another great Dark Den vid at the end of the week 👌👍
I've kept millipedes with different species of stick insect and i had no troubles with it at all. They didn't eat the eggs, my stick insects still bred like crazy😂
As always a great video.
Congrats on the new Camera.
PLEASE... LETS HOPE YOU GET YOUR KEYS FOR THE DARK DEN STUDIO THIS WEEK. Holding thumbs gor you.
Chaos addict.... Thanks for the link Perko.... They ROCK!!!?
So excited for the new place!! I hope it will be a cool place. You could name it the arthropods gallery like a tribute to Joey? 😊
I love communal set ups. They are my favorite. :)
Great to see you going ahead. Love your vids. Gorgeous millipedes.
Dear Petco
I think that you should remove the millis because they will eat all the eggs if there is any plus they may eat the plants also u shouldn't put millis in coco fiber
I neeeeeeed that calendar! :D
Sad news about the Pumkin patch and the mantis but like you said, sometimes they just go! I got a C. versicolor sling a week ago and I’m watching it like a hawk :D
Think this was the best video I've seen by you ...! Awesome job ...!
I have only been watching your channel for a short time but love them keep up the good work
The way he throws on t shirts and when he has an editor error he shows us him editing is always very cool
YEAH dark den uploads! Here is another great video!
Cover the glass somehow, so they can't drown. It happened to mine Peruphasma :/ Use a jar with holes in the lid and stick the feeding plants thru them. Better safe than sorry ;)
The millipeds need white rotting wood and leaf litter as substrate. It needs to be filled in fairly high as well since it is their main food source. Supplement them with sepia shell to provide calcium for their exo-skeleton. Don't use coco fibre as substrate since it causes impactions in millipedes.
+Scott 1, not true, unfortunately. A millipeds main food source is the cellulose found in white rotting wood and leaf litter. They eat the ground they live in. Besides that, they like to eat all kinds of fruit and vegetables and even the occasional dead insect. The amount of alternative food acceptance varies between species, with the giant millipede Archispirostreptus gigas accepting huge amounts of fruit and vegetables while a lot of Spirobolida species tend to only eat the aforementioned white rotting wood and leaf litter. Nevertheless, if you don't provide them with the wood and leave litter, they will starve eventually.
Regarding the impaction issue with coco fibre, I can provide you a link to a german millipede forum where a professional pathologist who happens to also keep millipedes dissected a number of dead specimen that where send to him by various forum members. He found clear signs of impactions caused by the indigestible coco fibres (in german language only, unfortunately): forum.diplopoda.de/wbb/index.php/Thread/5442-Cocohum-sch%C3%A4dlich-f%C3%BCr-Diplopoden/
Hey Petko, just want to say thank you. Last night i got my first tarantula its Brachypelma smithi and you are the reason i did that . Your videos make me fall in love with those creatures. I'm usualy an ant guy. I just wanned to say thank you and keep up the good work. Cheers form Bulgaria
Your videos are always amazing, thanks for doing great videos
From what I understand Millipedes eat fungus & plants, they are not predators
Cool set up, add more maybe larger isopods
Finally ❤️❤️ Fridays are so long ..I can't wait for ur video
Dude, PLEASE come to the second biggest reptile/invert expo on the 1st of april in the netherlands, it should be later this year aswell and they have the weirdest stuff ever there.
Jes please i wil be there to
Bro we need bigger videos!!!BTW you make awesome content, much love!!
You remind me of Borat! You must be a big fan of the movie! You’re Always making references to it! Love the videos keep it up!
YES IVE BEEN WAITING ALL DAY
This video is amazing and the randomness is always welcome!
That is one AWESOME calendar. If those were in my mall, I would buy it.
could you make a video about which tarantulas you would call beginner, intermediate and advanced tarantulas? there are lots of people who made vids about starters but almost none about intermediate and hard T's
Tristan 2000 th-cam.com/video/_Vk8aWpDTxs/w-d-xo.html He covered that in this video.
good idea!
Harmony between the Jungle and Rainbow!!!
Another great vid!
Thank you.
The music is very nice too
random thought but you should make a whole video of blooper reels it would be funny haha love the videos tho good work!
You should get an orb they are really cool
because of your videos i have a neat collection of my own even if i quit keeping i will still watch your vids
As a metal head I’m willing to check that band out. If it’s death metal or heavy metal, say no more I’m all about it.
That band has some headbangers. I approve.
Love it as always!!! 💗💗
Millipedes require a thick layer of a special substrate with rotting leaves to eat. I don't think they will do great in a thin layer of coconut fiber. They are very docile animals so they won't hurt other species.
You need to get either an orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus), ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) or a spiny flower mantis (Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii).
Bra don't stop doing what you are doing. Love your vids
As always such a cool video Petco! We have some really massive millipedes here in South Africa, if I see one again, I`ll try and get a cool video for you. :)
Hey I have an idea you should take pictures of all your tarantulas and the insects that you keep and make a calendar what's the name of the species on it and put it up for sale 4 subscribers to buy one it would help you buy new materials for enclosures I love us who watch your videos would love to have pictures of your collection
Do more forest exploring vids
Your awesome brotha, keep up to good work!!! Im trying to buy my first sling but still scared, any advice??
I sure hope you get the keys tomorrow! Well, you've probably already got them by now if you were to get them "tomorrow." I'm just really excited to see the new place!
Hey darkthenn ! Where i cant get tha calendar???? Realy niceeeee
What program do you use for editing your videos. Btw I like your channel! Keep it up!
hello Petko i was wondering because i have a baby crested gecko and it only eats its pangea if i hand feed it, any idea of what i should do so i dont have to hand feed him very day?
I doubt that millipedes would eat healthy jungle nymph eggs but I wouldn't risk it either. They are opportunistic omnivores and have powerful jaws for chewing through wood and other materials.
You should show your all animals again and how they do at the moment.
omg, the star trek sound effect for the doors 😂🤣
When you showed the laptop it made me chuckle because I have the same one haha!
My favorite is the spiny assassin guys!
With (hopefully) more space soon are you considering starting a communal spider setup such as M. Balfouri? I love the honesty in your videos, thanks for sharing all your news even if some of it is sad as it makes the good news even better.
Ratboy1664 he has a m balfori communal or he did
My Hero, you're the reason why i got tarantulas and other creepy crawlies
You need to add more substrate. The substrate should be at least as deep as the longest milipeed is long because milipeeds like to dig.
I have been doing research for a couple years and looking because I am scared of spiders but I love tarantulas I love the bright bold colors and I am still searching what is the best specie to get
Random...just like you said but a GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS!! I purchased my 1st tarantula because of you and I love it!!
I can't find the milipede party video. Where's it? Someone please link here... I would love to see, and I am sure others would too.
The note means that you should keep your head up when things are going bad. like don't let the bad things bother you, stay strong. I don't know if you had some bad things going on I have to catch up on 2 videos but I think you everything is going good maybe it they're talking about the pets that passed away love your videos!!! 🤗🤗🤗❤❤❤❤
Petko I was reading the comments and I think they are worried about the millipedes!! Will you let us know if you need to change the substrate
What kind of trantula would you recommend me. For a beginner I'm sacred of them but I really want one
Their(jungle nymph) eggs look similar to poop, so now be careful in tossing out substrate. I don't forsee the millipedes causing an issue, due to their dietary habits, but if you want to play it safe, wait till you get stick insect babies before adding the millipedes. Just make sure the "pedes" have constant supply of food.
Great now I'm a fan of chaos addict , also 2020 y'all
I can t Wait to See ur new set up😍
I hope to see you at the BTS! it would truly make my day!
I LOVE your intros
0:27 eargasm 🤤🤤🤤
I love how you perfectly say the Latin names but still struggle with English. Keep up the good work man.
Awwww so sorry about your sling + your Mantis - he was a funny guy..... Cool calendar + good luck with your move. thx Marco ;-)
Most millipedes are herbivores and detritivores, so i would guess that the Jungle nymph eggs would be ok? Im so looking forward to creating my first communal invert vivarium....
Great update!
My father has the same laptop (they gave it to him for work) and it's pretty nice, I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot!
