      What a brilliant setup and care video. I've just got two Thyropygus allevatus uncinatus. Will your set up be OK for them?
      Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
      Thanks andy

    I bought two millipedes yesterday out of impulse and I kinda regret it now. I can go collect leaves a few months from now in the fall, but I have no idea how to find pieces of rotten wood (not coniferous or evergreen) unless I go to a forest, but that's so much work just to get rotten wood... And it's hard to find stores here that sell organic black earth topsoil without people complaining about finding pieces of plastic and glass in the soil... The soil also smells strongly of manure and attracts flies apparently... Once these two pass away I don't think I'm going to own anymore, unless I can find good sources for substrate and wood.
    *Edit:* Found a site that ships flake soil and dead leaves to my area. As for the topsoil, I just removed the sticks and pieces of plastic and stuff by hand. If I can keep my millipede alive for a few years, I might consider owning them again. I realized how absolutely adorable their little alien faces are!! My millipede has become my favourite pet invert.

  • @IllusionQueen4Eva
    @IllusionQueen4Eva ปีที่แล้ว

    I finally managed to find all the supplies that I need, but I might not even need those supplies for much longer. One of the millipedes is probably already dead. I think I might have drowned it while it was molting by spraying the enclosure with water daily. Wished you went into more detail about the watering process and when it's too dry or too wet to water.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's sad to read, although I'm not sure it's possible to drown a millipede just by misting (unless you threw a bucket of water on her).

    • @IllusionQueen4Eva
      @IllusionQueen4Eva ปีที่แล้ว

      @ My second millipede molted successfully using only two weeks, while my first one had been underground for over a month, so I knew it was dead. I unearthed it and confirmed that it had died after molting. I took a photo and showed it to people, and someone who also accidentally killed their millipede by overwatering confirmed that mine had died the same way.
      I would like to clarify that the substrate in the previous container was only about two inches deep. The ventilation holes were very small, and when sprayed daily, the soil became sopping wet, so yes it is definitely possible to drown a millipede in these conditions. Once my supplies (wood, leaves, flake soil) finally arrived after a few weeks, I mixed it all together and placed it in a bigger enclosure with better ventilation and moved my second millipede in there. Now I don't spray/mist anymore, I only pour water into the substrate and only once a month, and I make sure not to water when he's underground/molting out of paranoia. Just in case once a month is not enough, I also placed a shallow water dish in there so that he always has access to water. He is doing fine so far. If he continues to do well, I plan to get him a friend in the future to make up for the one that died.

    I found 3 brown flat backed millipedes a few days ago while looking for isopods, I immediately put them in my collecting jar 😁 first time having millipedes as pets, (except one in my isopod terrarium which I must have grabbed with the forest soil), I'm super excited! For now they're living with the isopods, is there anything I should know?

      This is the 4th video I've watched today in setting up milli tanks and so far it's the *best*. I'm subscribing just for this video. Use only hardwoods and hardwood leaves.
      Keep a moisture gradient. You can feed sweet potato and zucchini as snacks.
