When we learned wrist locks, my instructor emphasized quick footwork in tandem with the (first) supine lock to keep moving in a circle (to the outside of the attacker's arm) to keep the attacker's arm in a line and keep them off-balance so that they can't bend that elbow (and ultimately circle them into the ground.
