I love Peters look at the end. His eyes, it's like an acceptance, he's happy to show that that is exactly what he was doing to himself. And he's back better than ever.
I fucking love this band. So glad they put aside their differences to put out another great album. Hoping we don't have to wait 10 more years til the next one....
Thing that gets me isn't Pete and Carl, but John sitting there and watching it from the other side, must be hard watching your friends destroy themselves
yeah, he has such a mortified look on his face, he looks like hes at a funeral or something. the other thing that sticks with me is Gary's facial expressions; he looks so shocked and concerned (at like 2:13 and 2:17 and around 2:33 for example)
@@Garrett1240 not sure if he relapsed but I read years ago he had a heroin problem before the band took off, dont know if it was particularly serious but it was a story about Pete going to his house with a load of heroin they did together then flushing the rest because he felt so bad about corrupting him after he was doing so well clean, been 16 years since I read it so may have a few things not 100%
Sitting here, stunned. This was courageous and affecting. John's look of stoic misery and Gary's disbelief were integral. I thought the use of the peep-show technique was inspired also, with the obvious turn-ons, or mute horror of the the observers as they watched Carl's and Peter's struggles with drink and drugs, and each other. Make no mistake, this was about BOTH of them. This was about all of them. This was about all of US.
Jacqui Wilmot yes of course it's about both of them, and about us! what else could be ? Most "fans" don't want to realize they're included as well, they're a big part of it.
Carl's parts on this song are amazing!! This song is full with the key element that has always made me appreciate the lad's work: soul. Just beautiful.
I never thought I'd love a band as much as The Smiths, but I think The Libs are it! They get me jumping, crying, laughing every time I hear them. Saw them in Edinburgh in August '23 - astounding! Too loud, but I think I should have been by the mixing desk. xxx ... and Babyshambles are no slouch either...
I think the music video was used to show that, their drug addiction was caused by their selves but continued from the reactions of the public, such a clever video and such a great band. Want to see them live again
I don't know how to feel about this, I mean when I start watching the video I was so excited and pleased but then i realized that this is how they felt, like for Peter doing this is like a therapy of how he really felt and Carl he was so mad at himself, then John and Gary watching this like in the old times, GUYS THIS IS HOW THEY REALLY FELT BACK IN THE OLD DAYS! Im so happy that my guys are fine, happy and pleased with their lifes now. I love them so much 💖
This is beautiful but so heartbreaking at the same time. As a fan it makes me feel guilty and filthy. But they're really courageous for doing something like this, the four of them. One of the many things that come to my mind when I see John's look of hopelessness and misery is 'There are no innocent bystanders'. This is a masterpiece.
I think is a video against drugs, everyone fights with himself trying to stop with them while people are watching... great message! Great song! Great band! The Libertines forever!

Very beautiful, thought out, artistic video that potrayed their story perfectly with amazing symbols. The story is said, but it also represents hope for the future and just when you realize your problems, you are already getting better.
A brave piece of film -- trust the Libertines not to shy away from controversial topics -- to face the past is the only way move forward -- it took a lot of guts for Peter & Carl to film this -- also the message that people (and tabloids) enjoy watching others suffer. Watching John, Gary and Carl's faces was also upsetting. Also another great song.

I've only been listening to the Libertines for a few months and wished I'd heard their stuff years ago. There is something that reminds me of the Smiths here -which I like. Great album and great videos :)
this is probably about the media exploiting they're drug and alcohol use and their fans thinking it's cool, when really the band members regret it now and they were really torturing themselves. in short this song is about getting better
+patrick miller The Libertines have never been a band to lack candour or bravery... almost to a fault. Their honesty, their friendship, has played out in the public domain often with catastrophic consequences. In "Heart Of The Matter", Peter and Carl reflectively talk about the damage and abuse they have caused themselves over the years, openly mystified that they have survived thus far. It's a catharsis, a bleak, bold and brave one. The unsettling subjects could not be shied away from. On the contrary, these had to be faced head on.
Ouch. Brutal but beautiful. All great artists are honest and The Libertines really get "straight to the heart of the matter." Wow! I could have an Olympic-sized swimming pool with all the tears I've shed over this band...sob.

I think fame and fortune should be the third single. Thank you guys for this amazing album. I think it is the last rock & roll album ever. Style and good music.
I've been into the Libertines for over ten years. Back then I knew some people who like them too, but for years I've just enjoyed them in my bedroom and in my mind, privately, you could say. I was into them, especially at first, in the way the laughing kids are in the video, and sometimes in even in the fetishized way of the couple making out. I would never have been able to articulate it before this video, but those avenues into the Libertines, absorbing the media spun images of their self-destruction feel wrong, and even felt wrong in a way at the time though I was not fully aware of it. The guy at the start and end of the video understands. As positive an outlook as the Libertines offer, and as cool as they really are, they are singing about the hardest times in life, and I think that's always what attracted me to them--that's the heart of the matter. And to appreciate this music is to appreciate an expression of deep and human pain and struggling, like that of Odysseus and Aeneas. I consider the Libertines to be worthy followers in the footsteps of John Milton as masters of the English language and contemporary poetry that invokes the classics and the sympathy of the masses at the same time.

A video that wasn't openly "cashing in on Pete's drug addiction" would be disingenuous, because like it or not, that's been a part of the draw to the libertines, at least on the surface (and now, if not also hinted at long ago, in a deeper way) since they started getting attention--and I mean the kind of attention at filthy mcnasty's when John had given up, or once they were on the cover of NME or in the heat of the tabloid limelight of 2005 and 2006 when it was all drugs and scandals that anyone could talk about--and it was at that point that those of us who happened to notice through our shared disgust of the characters that there was something darkly beautiful going on in the music that we saw ourselves in. A generation ago, people said Bob Dylan spoke to a generation, he gave them words that they were feeling. And since the early 2000s, an under appreciated decade, we have had for the first time since a voice, a small family of voices even, surrounding the birth of the libertines and their extended family, that is just real in the kind of way that will know you back off your daily routine. What's important is that we go through life with open eyes, so thank you, John, Gary, Peter, and Carlos. -Sam Shapiro
It's good, painful and so deep at the same time, this video describes very well, not only their old situation and feelings, but also a situation we all, at least once in life, got into! Well done lads and thank you! Sorry for my bad english :/
That was the most powerful video that i saw this week. It's not just because take me surprised, indeed the scenes are so schocking and they admitted that the blame of his "faults" are they own. I'm so fucking happy that Libertines are back, and we're in the same vibration again.
Took me a few listens but I love the album. I think I was just a bit apprehensive seeing as it's been so long since the others. There's not a song that I don't like on it but this is my favourite. Thanks and well done on the album lads, keep 'em coming.
Pete&Carl are my spirit animals. I love them beyond words. I wish to be like them one day. Not heavy drug users. Awesome stars going their way and fighting against whole world for the love and music they're believing. And I will be.
lets not forget either that carlos is no stranger to the dance . hes had his struggles as well. hes had tales of mountains of cocaine. pete shouldn't bare shoulder all the shame and carl has admitted this.
There is nothing but raw emotion when Carl starts singing.. it’s truly amazing
Yeses amazing
I love Peters look at the end. His eyes, it's like an acceptance, he's happy to show that that is exactly what he was doing to himself. And he's back better than ever.

Being hard done
Hard done by

Wicked smile and laughing at the misfortune of others

It's good, painful and so deep at the same time, this video describes very well, not only their old situation and feelings, but also a situation we all, at least once in life, got into! Well done lads and thank you!
Sorry for my bad english :/
Una exelente cancion de una exelente banda, una de las pocas bandas que aun conservan su estilo propio, grande The Libertines
What a video! One of my favorite songs on the album as well.
such a powerful video if you no a little history of them, so honest. glad there both looking healthier than a few years back
love this song must have listened to it 50 odd times. glad u guys are back and keep up the good work
One of the best music vids I've seen... so clever and tragic and beautiful
Surprisingly one of the best Libertines track I've heard in awhile...
That was the most powerful video that i saw this week. It's not just because take me surprised, indeed the scenes are so schocking and they admitted that the blame of his "faults" are they own. I'm so fucking happy that Libertines are back, and we're in the same vibration again.
This is their masterpiece...
Yeeah! I love this band!! Recently saw them at the Lollapalooza in Berlin! : )
a heartbearking peep show. Love this video.
sin duda es una de las mejores bandas que sigue manteniendo ese estilo rebelde tan característico del rock
Shows how far they have come this is a band to be proud of 💚💚
I will always be a fan of Pete Doherty and his band mates. I love them all and their music. This song sounds great!
Excellent video and concept.. Straight to the point..
Mr Carl is extremely gorgeous on the red!!!
You always knew how to write a top chorus Peter

peter's forlorn eyes looking at himself at 0:44 :-(
Good video, great song, amazing album
"Why would you pay, to see me in a cage"
They never bettered "The Libertines". It is and I suspect will remain their masterpiece. Such a shame. So much potential, such is life.
Best video ever from Libertines ! Well done ;)
One of the top songs of the album, great video!!! Fame and fortune for the next one :)
love you guys ❤
Took me a few listens but I love the album. I think I was just a bit apprehensive seeing as it's been so long since the others. There's not a song that I don't like on it but this is my favourite. Thanks and well done on the album lads, keep 'em coming.
I want more songs like HEART OF THE MATTER
My favourite of the anthem! Thank you the libertines!
Pete&Carl are my spirit animals. I love them beyond words. I wish to be like them one day. Not heavy drug users. Awesome stars going their way and fighting against whole world for the love and music they're believing. And I will be.
Same here.
This is just so brilliant.
this is ann incredible video. it stirred up old sickening feelings and is a dead on look at how it must feel. if you give in ...you lose.
lets not forget either that carlos is no stranger to the dance . hes had his struggles as well. hes had tales of mountains of cocaine. pete shouldn't bare shoulder all the shame and carl has admitted this.
The Libertines are immortal. They sound like London in every perfect way.
One of my favourites videos!!
Bass line is an absolute killer!!!
