  • For too long vermouth has just been that sweet drink people like James Bond mix with other drinks to make cocktails.
    Well in Span it's a big deal and is drunk neat, from the tap.
    I decided to embark on a trip that would take me from the capital of Madrid, to Barcelona and Reus and back again. All in the name of vermouth.
    Thanks to Renée Christenson of Devour Barcelona food tours; Laura Prats, Carles Prats and Helena Ferreiro of Miró vermouth producers; and Paula Móvil and Roberto Castán of the Vermutería back in Madrid.

    I just love a culture where people party till late the night before, wake up and start drinking around noon, before lunch and more food and drinking. Viva Espana!

    El vermouth (vermú) era una institución en la Castilla de los 70. Recuerdo perfectamente de niño salir a "tomar el vermú" con mis padres los domingos después de misa y antes de comer. A los críos nos servían un culín con gaseosa. Supongo que hoy les quitarían la custodia a nuestros padres y le cerrarían el negocio al del bar.

    Great video and channel. Really had my eyes opened about Spanish vermouth after a trip to Barcelona this summer, but, ironically, my favorite vermouth of all the ones I tasted was from Madrid -- Zarro, though I wouldn't have turned any of ones I drank down. Cheers!

    I think it should be recalled that vermouth was invented in Italy, in the city of Turin. The original recipe is more or less unknown, but today there are several variations and each place has its own. Carpano, the firm founded by the inventor of Vermouth, proposes this formula

    • @thegastrotraveler
      @thegastrotraveler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! I was lucky enough to try recently the Antica Formula vermouth which was delicious! It's a shame that modern Italy has lost a lot of its straight vermouth drinking concept and has become more famous for the 'mixing' types like Martini or Cinzano. But I'm glad it's bouncing back!!

    Vermouth [1] [2], or vermutte [3], or vermouth in French spelling [3] and vèrmot in Piedmontese [4], is a flavored liqueur wine created in 1786 in Turin. [5] It is recognized as a traditional Italian agri-food product and is a primary ingredient of numerous cocktails. From 2017 it is a registered geographical indication. [6] (Wikipedia)

    Really cool, Thank you!
    But the heartland, for lack of a better word, of vermouth is what is now Northwest Italy and Southwest France, and I don't think it's fair to imply that vermouths from there are mainly for use in mixed drinks.
    In any case, this was really interesting, and I want to try vermouth on tap in Spain now.

    Why do gobby yank birds insist on telling the world how things should be done according to them .
    The old fellas in Catalonia have been doing this before they were a twinkle in their grandparents eyes, yet they think it should be done the 'merican' way .
