It was meant to represent man's plight in this desert called the World and his search for sustenance beyond the physical to carry him through and come in touch with what the Son of Man calls Life and the Resurrection.

Please check this scriptures; Math 4:1"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil." Luke 4:1"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, " Mark 1:12"And immediately the Spirit drives him into the wilderness."
