    Built in the 50's updated in the 80's except the sinks and bathtubs. All the lights were 1980's except the Dining room. The basement looks like it's always had water egress issues meaning the foundation was built wrong. It's a shame to see most of those fixtures going into a landfill somewhere. That shower door should've been kept too. A real work of art there. There were many items that could have been saved and recycled through a restore.

      @Meriale46 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      First of all, morals have nothing to do with the reason why that house is being condemned and demolished. The house was severely damaged by floodwaters and there are a variety of reasons why the bank who now owns the property has either sold it off to a second party after the last tenants or owners moved out. Or the insurance company may have paid off and the owners are having the home rebuilt because the basement structure is no longer sound enough to keep the house from sustaining future damages due to water condensation or buildup around the foundation of the home. There are many reasons a house may be destroyed after suffering structural damages... it has absolutely nothing to do with having no style, class or morals. If you knew anything about construction you'd understand that and be able to see the home was far too damaged to salvage. This house was built in the late 60s and therefore and most likely not up to date for today's building codes.

      Christie Quinn I love the idea, this place is awesome! Realistically though you would have to get the basement up to code before you could safely live there and you would have to spend around $100,000-$300,000 to be able to do that. Not worth it in my opinion, better off just to start over.

    All these comments and not one about all those chrome wire Bertoia chairs just sitting there begging to be saved?
    I am going to guess the closed off stairway used to go to the kitchen. This house would have probably had a live in maid and groundskeeper married couple and the little apartment was their housing provided. It was not uncommon for an older semi-retired couple to take such a position for a salary plus living quarters. Same situation with the smaller apartment houses back then, the supervisor / handyman got a little apartment in the basement.

As someone who lived through that, I assure you they are not what they're cracked up to be. Maybe a shag mat in front of your fireplace or something, could be reasonably, manageable. I absolutely get a kick out of how excited you get finding all these things that I once just took for granted growing up in the 60s. Its really actually heartwarming that a young person of today likes what I once loved or just took for granted because that's how everything was. I wished you could have lived in my day. You really would have been happy. By the way, that wasn't brick...it was called flagstone and it was pretty popular in the nicer homes of the day. (I'm 3 years older than this house). And the "Baby Duck" champagne was a cheap champagne that was big back in the 70s. The "Cold Duck" champagne was, anyway. "Baby Duck" didn't have the same alcohol content. It was just a little more than cider. Loved this house. Nice find. But extremely sad that it's going to be torn down to build another cookie cutter house or MacMansion. Sad. I would be in there snatching and grabbing those toilets and sinks and light fixtures. Sometimes, if they're tearing the house down, they'll let you raid the place. It's less they have to dump or recycle. And that shower door...LMFAO...a lot of guys wore shirts in the 70s with the naked lady silhouette on them. They had wallpaper like that too. And they're still on 18 wheeler mud flaps, I think. That was a big thing in the mid-70s, like 73-74. Smh. But I'd never seen a shower door with one of them on it. Someone should save that just for a museum or something. LOL. Before I go, let me ask you to please carry a mask with you? That mold will seriously mess you up...trust me.

    No replacement house will be as cool as this one, despite the ugly 80s remodeling. Why has almost everyone replaced luan doors with the white 6-panel doors? The mid-century style house we're renting, in a suburb of St Louis, was built in '64 and has the same kitchen cabinets as in the laundry room shown here. But someone replaced the luan with... white 6-panel doors. And most of the houses in our neighborhood were replaced with ugly contemporary ones.

    • @joeljames2294
      @joeljames2294 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly the reason is durability. You can use a hammer on the Masonite molded 6 panel and they bounce. My 50s house I bought because of it's style, over the 8 years I rented it out, been stripped of much 50s style. Those luan doors are fragile and brittle. They damage so easily, especially from kids or maybe furniture moving in and out. I finally just replaced all the doors with 6 panel. I had to rip out both the all yellow and all turquoise baths as the drain line collapsed under the slab. Since those were now gone I updated the kitchen from its pink and beige oddball size appliances to current as it was no longer a time capsule, and get $400 more a month as everything is now either stainless steel, or griege colored and kind of bland. But it is cheaper to go current and a better financial return too.

      Jimmy James I had to look up what a luan door was. I remember seeing them in my grandparents house, and you’re right! They were total garbage! I honestly did not like the look, even on the ones that weren’t damaged. They seemed pretty flimsy. And certainly did not look good against the avocado green shag they also had in the house.

      Don't forget that some of the 1960s and 50s flush doors were made of birch too with just high gloss varnish. The light blonde wood was very popular. If you ever get a chance, look at the I Love Lucy set of their hotel suite when they stayed in Hollywood. True over-the-top mid-century design with flush doors.

      Usually, My Darling, they do. Now having said that; most of the main floor of this place seemed to be in pretty good shape, but that basement was a lost cause, for sure. Still, there are vintage things there, that should have been salvaged if they were in good shape.
      I can't understand why people don't realize, that there are those out there, who are actually, INTO, old, vintage, things like this, and would pay a good price to have them. It's bad enough that so many of these wonderful, older, homes get destroyed in the first place, it's utterly, inexcusable that so much of the wonderful, vintage, stuff left behind, that clearly, seems to be in mint condition in most of these cases, gets destroyed, as well. It's an out and out crime as far as I'm concerned.

      @ivanj.conway9919 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whoareyoutoaccuseme : God Bless You Violet. I'm so pleased to find so many people of such a like minded mentality here. Yes, a cancer could be a good way to describe it, because it shows a complete, lack of value and appreciation for anything older, and things that have some real, true, character, after all. And like Ethan rightly says; Some of this type of thing should be preserved, as it marks the architectural history of a certain period of time. We value old, Victorian homes for the value they offer from the time period they were built in, well, the same goes to places built and decorated throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s in those styles. Once it's gone it's hard to replicate it, again. Thankfully, at least, people like Ethan, are making a record of these places that people can refer back to, to get ideas for the retro/vintage looks they want to create.
      Of course I understand people's arguments against preserving these places, because of the safety issues and so forth, but surely some of these places are worth preserving while still, taking that into consideration and trying to fix it, as best you can. But we know the ultimate, reason why all these places are destroyed, and it's quite, simply, that they don't fit in with today's aesthetic sense of beauty, or the lack thereof. Unless it's not all, damn, white, and everything completely, gutted to the point where you basically, have one, large, room people cannot be bothered with such places, any longer. It's exceedingly, sad and heart breaking, plus infuriating as all hell. I could maybe, live with tearing the places down and rebuilding them, IF, they were to keep to the look and style that was there before. Sadly, they can't even, be bothered to do that. People keep saying that no one wants those looks and styles anymore, while at the same time, I keep coming across comments and opinions to the contrary, and many of them from young people, as well. So what does one make out of that? Right?

    Those different wall switches are General Electric low voltage remote control. An infinite number of these low voltage switches are connected to a relay powered by a 24-volt transformer, that turns the power on and off. They were very popular in the late 50s and early 60s in higher-end homes. I used to live in a house that had these and learn how to repair them. The black mid-century modern fireplace should be saved.

You're talking about wine that's been kicking around and ageing for some 30+ years now. Can you imagine how much you'd have to pay for a bottle of wine that's over 30 years old, in a liqueur store, new? A good, pretty, penny, I tell you.
