It is because of your carpet in the sleeping room that you have so much particles on the filter I guess. Carpets are really collecting dust but also creating it. I have no carpet and my prefilter never gets that messy. But I clean it about once every 2nd month or once a month. I think it is good you can order the activated carbon separately. as it needs to be changed more often..
Yes you can vacuum that part of the filter which at the time I didn't realize and now I do but you still need to replace the filter after a period of time. But it's still also pretty amazing how much it does collect of dust and other things.
The prefilter is attached to the front of the carbon filter. You can remove it and wash it in a mild soapy solution. Let it completely dry before you put it back on the carbon filter.

Shouldn’t you be cleaning that filter during the 6 mos? No prefilter? That’s odd
