It is in many cases depending on the barrel. If it's a rare barrel or something then it might make sense. But set up and machining time plus shipping both ways... It can get expensive very quick...
Im so sorry you had enough people bugging you had to make a video about how you cant make a big hole smaller, hah. He was a great guy, he did acurising for competition rifles when he was in the military, and i learned a lot from him. But i am really greatful to our small town gunsmith who would answer all my fool questions when i was a kid, it played a big roll in me becoming a machinist, a job i enjoyed for 20 years. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. i had a 510 remington 22 lr rechambered to a 22 WMR had it done 25 years ago shows no pressure issues. it is 1/2 moa shooter , also had a 510 rebarreled to 17 HMR
Randy, Listening between the lines, I get the impression you spend a considerable amount of time dealing with folks who know it all… My dad ran a body shop years ago and everything you talked about with rifles, I remember him saying much the same about cars; I guess all businesses have similar customer types. Take care and be well!
The process works good on rifles that are expensive to rebarrel, rifles with odd contours and odd finishes.Old lever guns, rifles with iron plated stainless barrels or machined integral sight ribs are good candidates. Just remember that you won't be able to chamber a cartridge that is radically different from the current chambering, the feed mechanism and barrel contour dictate the limitations.
From Cathy: The Real Gunsmith's Wife: I try, I try! ;) We truly appreciate you all, we'll keep producing, God willing for a long time. Thanks for watching.
Yall have a blessed day sir I’d sure like to meet you but i can’t travel much anymore on account of my lower back and hip. Have a great blessed day you and your wife GOD BLESS
We've recently been using a kratom product called Train Wreck from Capitol Botanicals in Cody, WY. Has lessened pain for both of us to a great degree. Both of us from disc issues, Cathy with hip issue, also. It's been great to have the pain so reduced. Look them up, they ship all over and will be glad to tell you what products would work best for your particular situation. Thanks for watching. Go bless you and yours.
I had a 8 X 57 that was oversize but shot good . I shot lead slugs first with valve grinding compound . I followed that with bore polishing compound . These were shot with a few grains of unique powder . I ended up with a 330 bore & was able to shoot 338 lead slugs.
I would probably just opt for a new barrel. Although it is funny how a person can develop an attachment to a barrel. My 22/250 was shot out & it took months for me to accept it. I kept saying, “oh no, I will get it shooting tight again, I just need to re-work the load” Finally I had a fresh barrel put on & then I said, “oh that barrel will never be as good as the old one” well guess what ? It’s even better. A good barrel is like an old reliable hound. You just can’t bear to part with em.
Randy sir you know some people have to use their fingers and toes to count with it is what it is. But I’d love to know what you have forgotten GOD BLESS
I’ve not been talking to people much on Facebook I had open heart surgery triple bypass back in October the 10th and I still ain’t got my strength back I probably won’t from now on. I set and loaded counting the pistol rounds over a 1000 rounds everything from my 9mm up to my 300 Winchester magnum rifle. That was before the bypass surgery. I’ve loaded a few 243 rounds just to have something to do. I’ve got enough ammo I shouldn’t need anymore the rest of my life. I don’t shoot that much anymore to so I’m set up now. Some people just can’t handle the process it takes to load up rounds or work on guns.
From those I've talked to over the years, it takes a lot of time to heal from that surgery but most eventually got back to their old pursuits. Keep doing your PT and Praying you get better in time. Thanks for watching.
Actually feels like winter has lost its grasp. For now! ;) After all, it is WY! Thankfully we didn't have the drastic snows and hard winter most of the rest of the state [and others] had. But snow pack in the mountains is above average. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the education! Sounds like it would be much more cost-effective to just have a new barrel put on. Question... I have a brand new rifle in 6.5 creedmoor. Is it possible to chamber it to the 260 Remington??
The short answer is yes. But why would you want to? They are essentially the same thing. I'm not a Creedmoor guy but the components and ammo are much more attainable than the 260.
@The Real Gunsmith I should have been more thorough. You can do it, but you have to "set the barrel back" in order to do it. It's not as simple as just running the reamer in the existing chamber.
@@timjohnson2731 I reload and I am not a fan of the 6.5 creedmoor. In my opinion the 260 is just as capable if not more and I prefer a faster bullet. The 6.5 creedmoor is fine but again my opinion it's slow. I like a lighter faster cartridge and the 260 is perfect for what I use it for.
Hi ,Should you remove all copper from your barrel. Some say that the copper doesn't keep building up after a couple of shots. I would like your thoughts on it please.
I published a Patreon video on 1-9-23 on this channel, Cleaning a rifle barrel. That should answer your question. If I put the link in here, it gets held for review and you may not see it. Just got to my channel and in the search bar type in cleaning a rifle barrel. Thanks for watching.
Great Video! If possible, I would like rechamber and rebore a Winchester 1895 originally chambered in 30-06 with 24 inch barrel to 35 Whelen (5R Rifling with 1/12 or 1/10 rate of twist) or 9.3x62 (5R Rifling with 1/12 or 1/10 rate of twist). I have a Winchester 1895 originally chambered in 270 winchester as well, which could be another project gun. Has anyone done this to Winchester 1895 model? Any helpful comments are always welcome. Have a great day!
Thanks for the information. It may sound unusual but could you therefore re-bore, re-rifle, and re-chamber a .243 to .303 British?. Based on your video I assume this is possible. The rifle in question is a single shot break barrel gun.
I'd need to know make, model of the rifle to answer fully and accurately. It is best to email me, since even if I answer fully here, I can't give price, etc. See website at end of each video. Go to the Contact page. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for watching.
Can you rechamber a single shot rifle that has a bull barrel that is in 243 Winchester to a 7mm-08 or .308 Winchester? How much would that cost approximately?
This would be a rebore, rerifle and rechamber situation. I don't put prices on here as the prices, over time change. If you are interested, go to your website and either send an email or call. I'll be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Good afternoon, I Have a Thompson Dimension ( which they discontinued) but have numerous extra barrels and I’m looking to use the 270 barrel to possibly making a 338 winMag . Is this possible or can a new barrel be made?.
Only if the muzzle of the barrel is at .600 and you have the proper magazine bolt for it. If so, reach out to me on our website, contact page, see special instructions. Reference this question. I'll be glad to help and thanks for watching.
One can only rebore, rerifle to a larger caliber, or reline low pressure [not high pressure] barrels, with a new bore and chamber. Thanks for watching.
Imagine how many good shooting rifles have been ruined over the years with someone trying all these different things and failing miserably. Have mercy!
Great show 👍 Love this content. I cant learn enough on this topic . I just want all the information you wana put out here. Im like a sponge 🧽😂. Thank you
However, many of our clients don't wish to do that, for many different reasons, and I can accomadate them with the rebore, rerifle, rechamber. Thanks for watching.

Elk and moose 338 win mag. Nosler partitions. For me it was cheaper to buy a rifle than reborn one but that was my choice. Thanks again.
Randy most men today are just ignorant to how anything mechanical, electrical or electronic works. They have never run a lathe or mill or welded or built an electronic device from scratch, or repaired a car etc.....Just have no understanding of anything! It is sad.
Any ways it is way cheaper to purchase a new barrel and have it fit by a competent gunsmith. You are much more likely to get the outcome you desire and have more money in your pocket. It only makes sense to rebore, rechamber and re-rifle if it is a collectable and it's value would be grossly diminished by a modern rebarrel. I looked into the idea of a rebore, rechamber, re-rifle 20 years ago and they would not do military barrels, barrels with high nickel content and a long list of other things. It made no sense to me at that point!
If you use a cheap barrel it is, but not if you rebarrel using a quality barrel, such as the ones I recommend. Hart is tops. And yes, there are barrels that can't be rebored, so the only option is rebarrel. Thanks for watching.
not entirely unusual to do so on drillings. 22 savage to 7x57R is most common there. on bolt actions of various kinds, a new quality barrel is probably smarter, unless the profile of the barrel is very important for some reason or there is value in the rifle like a holland&holland, cheap remingtons or similar scrap metal, not sure if the job is worth it
It is often cheaper, especially since I won't rebarrel with cheap barrels. Top recommendation is Hart for stainless, Douglas Premium Air Gauge for blued chrome-moly. Clients are give the option either way and price. Their call after being given all of the options. Thanks for watching.
This is cheaper and works great. Clients are given the options, and many opt for reboring, rerifling and rechambering. A lot is based on cost, but for many they have a rifle they aren't using that much and want to try something else. This is cost effective way to achieve that. Thanks for watching.

It seems much cheaper to replace the barrel with the appropriate one for your intentions, excellent information Mr. Selby.
