  • 🌲Mood Ring™ Podocarpus / Easy Narrow Screening Plant - In this video I go over Mood Ring™ Podocarpus from the Southern Living Plant Collection. This is a low maintenance upright narrow cultivar that makes a great screening plant in narrow spaces. It has a perfect name, because it is constantly changing colors. It has vivid bronzy-pink new growth spring and summer which matures to dark green.

    I shot this video at the old house last month. I brought this plant with me to the new house and it is finally going in the ground. Thanks for watching

      @HortTubewithJim putnam Thanks for the video. Does this podocarpus has a deep, thick root system? I want something to screen an area of my yard that won't grow into any pipes that may be in my yard. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions

    I planted a Podocarpus last year. It was new to me. It is a really lovely plant and it is soft to the touch. Planted mine by the pool. I don't know why we don't see more of these lovely bushes.

    I have recently specified this plant on a project and can not wait to see it go in the ground at one corner of the home and go though a growing season!

    So glad to find another NC gardener. I grew up in the Piedmont but now live in Asheville. I will have to visit your landscaping business this summer. Enjoy your videos! I am a beginner and need lots of help!

    Hey Jim, quick question should I fertilize these Mood Ring podocarpus right after planting or wait a year? My wife went on a landscaping binge and just purchased 40ish of these buggers.

    I'm in Central Florida. Can I grow Podocarpus in a container (permanently) and let it grow to 8-10 feet, while keeping it narrow? It would be in a side yard, used as a privacy screen and I would rather not plant it into the ground. Or any recommendations other than Podocarpus for this scenario (in a pot, kept narrow but tall for privacy screen)? By the way, really appreciate your channel; I got some Steeds Hollies based on your video recommending them, and they're doing great!

    Did this survive the recent harsh winter in your garden?

    How fast does it grow when planted in the ground?

    Is this one similar to Monrovia’s Icee Blue podocarpus? I can’t find this one, but our Lowe’s carries the blue one. I’m wondering if it would be more delicate or sun-sensitive. Thanks for your videos!

    • @JimPutnam

      They are both Podocarpus, but they are different species. I'm not familiar with the blue one. I do know that Mood ring is more cold hardy if that matters

      HortTube with Jim Putnam Thanks! I’m in north central FL (Gainesville), so we get some deep freezes, but we also fry in the summer. It can be tough on plants. Some I can grow, and some I kill! ;)

    How long do you think you could keep it in a container? I need screening in an area where there is a deck and no ground available. Thanks.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be a container plant as long as you have it, but it would not like to freeze solid

    Are podocarpus really a toxicity issue around pets/children? I’m getting mixed information on them.

    Is only the Mood Ring Podocarpus the one with the pink leaves or will other varieties have it? Is it available at Home Depot?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mood Ring has the best foliage color, but they all have reddish new growth. Not sure about availability

    Looks very similar to an upright yew. Why would you chose one over the other?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is an oversimplification, but consider an upright yew good for folks in the north and podocarpus to be better in the south. Similar results though

    How fast does it grow?

      @JimPutnam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most podocarpus grow pretty quickly once they have some roots under them.

    Sun requirements?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These will actually do sun or shade. I am putting up a video soon where podocarpus are in the shade. The only problem is you will loose that new growth color in the shade. Good question. I was betting g myself up earlier thinking how dumb it was that I didn't point that out.
