  • Very Showy Fast Growing Screening Plant - Olive Martini™ Elaeagnus - In this video I plant some Olive Martini™ Elaeagnus from the Southern Living Plant Collection in my garden to create a screen. This is a very low maintenance fast growing variety. This variegated evergreen shrub is usually pest free.

    Just found this great video as I was doing research on hedge options for our back fence. Last year’s winter sub-zero temps took out our two fotinias that provided partial privacy, and now I want something that will grow quickly and can be kept manicured in front for a full sun flower garden. I saw these at a garden center and loved the color. Thanks for this video as it gave me more confidence in my choice!

    I'm in the second season with these plants and I'm not getting the "fast" growing result. Plenty of watering, 10-10-10 fertilizer but little growth. I'm in Zone 6a, I covered them in the winter with burlap the first year. In the second year I left them uncovered and we got our typical cold snowy weather, some rain than freezing. We get plenty of ice/snow/freezing and sometimes it warms up a little and then BAM, more bad weather. This Spring the plants definitely had leaf damage but finally recovered as warm weather ensued. Still, now in August but there is no rapid growth. The leaves certainly have the lovely variegated colors. Thanks!!

    Just found your channel. Subscribed today. Thanks for all the fast privacy screening videos. We are building a new house right now and our only neighbor is 300 ft from the house. We have a thick forest between us in the summer but most of the trees are deciduous. I will be putting up a fence shortly and will be planting several of these Olive Martinis along the fence line along with Oakland and Needlepoint hollies. We want a dense border along the fence. We are in middle TN. So if you can suggest any other fast growing privacy shrubs and trees I would really appreciate it.

    Jim, that will be so very beautiful filled in by your fence. You are doing some good looking work in your yard. I have a VERY BLANK space between me and my neighbors house and really don't want to put up a privacy fence but would need something to grow VERY fast for screening. Would I be able to purchase from a local nursery an elaeagnus that is larger than your plants and if so, what would be the survival rate on planting one that is larger/older? Also, is the Olive Martini faster growing than Silverberry Pungens and the Glen St. Marys compact silverthorn? I really like the silvery/gray/green of the later two varieties. Which is the fastest growing and also I do not wish to have anything that will send off seedlings popping up everywhere like the dreaded popcorn tree!!! Thanks for any info.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Variegated plants are almost always slower growing than their green counterparts. You can find bigger eleagnus for sure, but this variety is so new that it may be a while before large ones are available.

    How do these do in acidic soil? I have an area I'd like to plant a few fast growing plants for privacy. The area's sunlight is dappled morning sun, shade around noon-2 and then a decent dose of late day sun until sunset, but it's an area with short leaf pines and camellias (I'm assuming the soil is more acidic based on the presence of pines and happy camellias and one happy holly). Do I just cut the stray pieces coming out or do I need to cut the front the back and the top and leave the sides that I want to connect to the other bushes? If so how aggressive should I cut or should it be a selective inside prune?
