The northern cardinal is ohio state bird
I watched a Flock ( 40-50? ) land on our Holly Tree in town . When they left after 20 Mn. or so , Not a Berry was left . Even on the Ground . Good Vid. Thanks
Are you laughing in Morse code at the end? RBN6EOND?
Seeing a cardinal in the snow is a beautiful sight.❤
It pops😮
Yes it is 😍
I have been feeding the same male cardinal for 3 years and the "same" female mate of his for 2 yrs. I whistle and, if they are in the area and hungry, they swoop in to a particular bush to await scattered sunflower seeds. In the spring, the male often feeds his mate with the seed meats. Thank you for posting. It's much appreciated.
First birds to sing in the morning 🌞 id whistle back and they'd respond until they realized I didn't know what I was saying to them lol, then they'd get annoyed stop the exchange 😊
So cool!!! Glad they come back to visit you.
They are amazing and so are you! Peace!
Those "mates" that you see the male feeding in the spring, are most likely his offspring.
Same.
The cardinal is not just the most beautiful bird I see in my yard, it's also my favorite songbird. They are such delightful creatures.
I'm 70 yrs old and live in Northeast Ohio. When I was a kid, my parents fed the birds and I learned to identify all of the local birds that would come to the feeders. After I moved from home, I would always put out a bird feeder wherever I happened to be living at the time. The cardinal has always been one of my favorite birds. They are so beautiful. I still feed the birds to this day and I see them every day but I never really knew what their life cycle was like. This video taught me a lot. Thanks for posting. There is one thing that I have noticed about them. They are the first birds to come to the feeder in the morning and the last birds to come to the feeder in the evening. They seem to have long days.
Thanks, same here @77 years young..we still ,feed birds.. moving from Northern Indiana ( WARSAW, Valpo- Spouse from) to HELENA Valley, just 8 yrs ago: no Cardinals( our Faves) & Blue Jays …But,,we do have some goodies: American White pelicans ( esp on local Resorvoir, where we Kayak past GREAT BLUE HERON ROOKERY; 39-40 nests, small compared to an old Rookery we had in WARSAW) ,Eagles,Western Meadowlarks ((*hundreds around, singing, at Madison BuffalomJump Reserve),& bluebirds, Osprey, etc. Interestingly, MAGPIES fill Blue Jay niches etc.. Anyways, lots of birds here.. must admit we did nit compute missing Cardinals , moving to life’s end here!,
Hard working
@@TonyGalla-kw4hwbusy birds. 😂
We've had the same Cardinal couple in our backyard for a few years now. I've observed the male feeding and raising not just his own but also the fledglings of other species. He likes to take his mate and young to our birdbath, where they sweetly bathe together. He lets his lady have at the bath first and guards her! (It can get competitive at the bird bath). I've watched him take the young birds of other species that he "takes under his wing" to the birdbath with him, as well. It's really cute. What a great Dad, he defends his fam and lady, AND he adopts! 💖
This winter I have a resident pair who root nightly under my second story bay window of our living room. There is a wisteria there that climbs the wall, so they use those ample branches to snuggle up tight against the bottom of the window’s overhang, which offers them relatively dry protection from the rain & snow. It’s also about 10 feet from the feeder, so they get an early breakfast and a late evening snack before turning in for the night. It’s nice to hear them roosting in the late evening, it gives me comfort to know they are home and safe!
This is so interesting and well written. I feel as though I am enjoying a novel on a cold winter's night, thk you.
What a beautiful story!
Thank you for sharing, really.
I live in Minnesota, and there used to be one winter where I discovered one beautiful tan colored female cardinal on my front step sitting on a ton of snow. She would just sit there, all puffed out, looking so gorgeous. I would give her sunflower seeds and even step outside next to her to give them. She wasn't afraid of me at all. She'd visit now and then, and then she reappeared the next winter, same thing. Such beautiful birds. Thank you for this video! ❤
My Grandmother passed away many years ago from brain cancer... on the day of her funeral while looking out of the kitchen window of her house, the back yard was full of cardinals... I have never seen so many any other time in my life thus far.. I actually tried count them... I knew it was a sign from above... no one can tell me otherwise.. They hold a special place
Above because birds fly? Sure. “god” didnt send you birds. He isnt real and you’ll never see your grandma again. Sorry
It was a sign from above.
🙏✝️
I cannot imagine seeing too many Cardinals to count . It must have been a wonderful sight. It must have brought you comfort . I believe it would have made me feel better. A sign from above.
@@egparis18Do you have any idea how delusional you sound.😂
Ontario Canada here, we love our Cardinals
Love my cardinals!! They are among my favorite at my feeders along with woodpeckers and blue jays! Love watching their personalities! The fact they stick it out through a long Northern Michigan winter makes me love them even more ❤
It's funny. I normally don't go looking for bird docs, but I read the title and thought to myself: ok. I'm in. Lets learn about some Cardinals today.
I thought to myself the same thing.
Same here 😅
Ditto!!! I don’t know what made me want to watch this, but i was drawn into it and here I am.
So much I did not know about this bird. 🦜 🦜 🦜
Think I’ll watch it again!
Yep! Me tooooo 😬
I was in North Carolina/Virginia last year and one thing that stood out to me is just how numerous and beautiful their cardinals and other birds are!
I’ll never forget when an Orange one flew right by me!
The "orange one" was probably an oriole or a robin. AFAIK, Northern Cardinals are never orange.
Originally from New England. Moved to Maui. Heard what I thought was a cardinal call. Sure enough, it was a bright red Northern Cardinal. Started seeing them everywhere on the island. Turns out they were introduced to Maui in 1929, and they flourished. And they actually look like tropical birds with the red coloring
@@bobp6280 They come around when the flock of painted buntings comes to the feeder. They go perfectly with those bright tropical colors, and the tropical flowers, now that I think about it. Also saw one in Belize.
Also, considering they are widespread in Mexico, abundant in Florida and Hawaii, they seem out of place on a snowy day. But no less spectacular, after seeing one in my grandmother’s yard in Massachusetts, during an 18 inch snowstorm. Wow!
That's very cool! Sometimes when I see cardinals and blue Jay's I try to remember how lucky I am to see colorful birds right in the back yard
Nothing cool about INVASIVE species!
I learnt a lot! Thank you! I love to see the Cardinals who visit the feeders in my garden. They are a source of joy in my declining years. 🤗
We just had a Cardinal and his wife come visit us. It was such a lovely sight.
Chad and Karen?
😂😂
I’m so grateful I inherited my love of birds from my dad. I still have his original bird books and enjoy seeing when he would mark with date/place when he spotted rare varieties in the New England area. My favorite is when my hummingbirds arrive and hand feed 🥰
Same here ,something else to embrace and cherish as his time grows near.
Animals are amazing! Can't get enough
I have one that’s a friend. What a gorgeous creature he is! I’ve never seen a more beautiful color. Ever. Anywhere.
One anecdote from my life is that Cardinals LOVE using dog hair for their nests. Whenever I brush out my dogs (golden retrievers) they are among the first birds to swoop in and collect the shed fur
When my golden retreiver was sleeping in the sun, the cardinals would land on him and pluck his fur right off him! He slept through it most of the time...and sometimes he'd wake up and look around... the funniest thing to witness. They were fearless.
I’ve seen this too. Very smart. Fur brings warmth to nests.
We have a husky and I see her hair in all the birds nests. My love of cardinals brought me here.
I lived nearly all my life in the Northeast US and loved seeing and hearing cardinals year round. They are especially lovely in the cold months when they are one of the few colorful things in the landscape.
Have lived on the west coast now for a few years. Have never seen a cardinal here. Really miss them!
Lived there 8 years, all I ever saw was blue jays, doves, crows, and hummingbirds.
From one of the states that has the Cardinal as its state bird and went to university at a school with it as a mascot. And, yes, I know how little that narrows it down. Go Cardinals!
me too!! IL, but go Redbirds.....
Louisville Cardinals!
Next to both of you. Indiana and Ball State Cardinals
My state (scissortail flycatcher) and university (Sooners) and high school (Tigers) all had different things representing them, but the school I currently work at as a substitute teacher does have the Cardinal as its mascot.
@@MatthewTheWanderer Not sure what everyone else thinks, but the scissor-tailed flycatcher is an excellent choice for state bird. Maybe the best one, actually. Wish there were more around here. Spectacular, especially in flight.
Jeez! My beloved, adorable bird. Some of them visit my backyard. I love everything about Cardinal, including their songs and especially chirping. ❤
This was educational as well as interspersed with bits that were humorous. I love watching the cardinals at the feeder, on the snow covered branches and when they feed their (and others) young ones. Gee, I did know they only live for around 3 years. That makes seeing them on a daily basis that much more of an honour! Thx for the video.
The yellow one is dazzling!
The feigned laughter at the end gets a 10. Sounds like a poly sci professor I had in college 52 or more years ago. Brought back pleasant memories
I’ll never forget the time a cardinal changed my mornings forever. It started a few months ago when I noticed a bright red cardinal visiting the same branch outside my kitchen window every day. I began leaving sunflower seeds on the windowsill, curious if he’d notice. To my surprise, he did-and soon it became our little routine.
Every morning, as I made coffee, he’d appear, hopping closer until he’d grab a seed and fly back to the branch. One day, he surprised me by landing on the sill and chirping a few notes as if to say 'thank you.'
What’s even more amazing is that he brought a companion a few weeks later-a shy female cardinal who would watch from a distance. Over time, she grew braver, and now both of them visit every morning. Watching them share seeds and interact feels like a privilege, and it’s become the best part of my day.
Cardinals truly are magical creatures-beautiful, loyal, and so full of personality. They’ve turned my simple mornings into something extraordinary. 🐦🐦🐦
My sister won a national championship at Louisville Cardinals and she has a ring with diamonds. We also won the heisman and many NCAA basketball championships. Its so cool, all the gear people make for us fans and just the History with the city is so American and beauitful. Louisville, Kentucky USA.
I never cared for birds at all,a cardinal showed up almost 4 years ago…
He brings the entire extended family for food now.I can’t tell them apart anymore, but the original one will perch an arms length from me,and just hang out near me.
One thing you did not mention was that Cardinals are active much further into dusk and earlier into dawn than other birds. I assume they have better sight? At my bird feeder, Cardinals are always the first bird in the morning and the last at night.
I’ve noticed that a lot of different birds are now more active in the dark hours. Possibly due to light pollution. Where I live it is very seldom truly dark unless there’s a power outage. Sad.
I noticed the same here in CT.
I love my four Cardinals. The bully Blue Jays always steal most of the food I put out but I do my best to save the best for my Cardinals and red squirrel. I love both guys!
Please consider that Blue Jays are not bullies any more than wolves, lions, tigers, bears, falcons or eagles are bullies. They just are.
Cardinals appear when Loved Ones are near….❤
Another enjoyable and informative bird video.
I enjoyed this video, and I especially enjoyed your personality, which makes this video fun to watch! Thanks!
Thank you for reuploading!!!
Don't recall seeing any Cardinals in Ca. But in Ok. I see them all the time. Strickingly beautiful birds, very memorable to view.
I have been feeding cardinals for a few years now and I have several families here 😊I love watching them they’re so beautiful there’s so many come to my feeders my cats enjoy watching them at the window ❤❤❤😊I’m in northeast Mississippi
Love this video. But, I really wanted to hear the numerous songs of this lovely bird. Please add that into your next videos. It would be much appreciated.
I live in western Pennsylvania and the cardinals are very abundant around here. I love watching them and I have 3 bird feeders set up plus I toss some black oil sunflower seeds mixed with farmers mix on the ground. It's cool to see the cardinals, chickadees, doves, titmouse, wrens, blue jays, and more plus the Grey and red squirrels all mixing together to eat. One winter I took my favorite picture of 7 male and a few females sitting in a small tree covered with snow and big snow flakes falling around them, it is a beautiful picture.
Wow, I've never seen more than 1 cardinal in one place before!
I have so many cardinals at my house, we often have 'border disputes' between them. The ALL come to my feeders, though, because I only put black sunflower seeds out. They eat and the argue, and sometimes they fight. Even the blue jays leave when the cardinals get nasty...
I live in southwestern PA and I hardly ever see any. That's so strange. I'm on 76 acres of land, 54 of said acres are woods. I get so many different birds and critters, yet my favorite bird eludes me. ☺️🐦🔥🤷♀️😢
Life long in southwest Pa. Cardinals aren’t uncommon here but still a thrill to see their brilliance against the dull grays and browns of winter or the white of snow. Miraculous really.
@badwizard1312 yea, the males really stand out against the colorless winters.
This spring, I had a pair of cardinals in my yard, they had a baby. This was very interesting thank you😊
Excellent, thank you! (From Wisconsin)
I live in Madison, Wisconsin...
They are all around and the males are beautiful...
FASCINATING and very interesting.
Thank you! 😊
I started putting out wild bird seed just thru last winter and attracted Juncos mostly and 1 or 2 pairs of some other small sparrow like bird but most enjoyably a Cardinal pair. Once the cold weather returned there they all were back! The Cardinals are such beautiful birds. Very glad to see they are doing well. Now I learn they can have 2-4 broods I see why.
I’ve always loved cardinals! We were lucky enough to have a pair build their nest in a shrub outside our window. The fledglings made quite a racket, haha. One morning a fledgling sat on our windowsill for a good minute checking us out; he was pretty scrawny looking but we knew one day he’d be a beautiful adult. ❤️
@ 8:47, great factual information complemented by great humour!
Great video, very informative.
I once watched a male cardinal fight with its reflection in the side mirror of my car. It went at it for a good 20 minutes and dropped to the ground a few times, maybe due to exhaustion.
Later, I looked at the mirtor and could see marks on it from where the cardinal had been pecking at it.
Great little video of my favorite bird
Enjoyable and informative video and I like the way the narrator pronounces "eggs". Cheers from Virginia where our state bird is the Northern Cardinal.
Good rendition of Peter Griffins laugh at the end. Great film, I've seen these guys around and have their feathers in my collection. Thank you...
Your videos always brighten my day! This one is especially amazing-so well done! Sharing this now. 🐾❤" (Posted 5:18 ago)

Happy i found your channel 😊
The first time I ever saw a cardinal was in 1986 when i attended university in London Ontario (southern Ontario). Now, I see them regularly in Ottawa Ontario illustrating the gradual northern expansion of their range. Beautiful birds.
Ha ha ha! Thank you for this informative video interspersed with plenty of funny jokes to last us for the rest of the day. : )
I sure did enjoy this,, I admire and adore birds, we had them at my other place, so many,, they look so beautiful on the white snow
I thank God every day for birds and nature, He is a wonderful Creator and she did create nature for us to enjoy🙌🙏🌺
I used string in my garden to tie up a vine. Later in the year, the vine was gone, and the string was just hanging there, blowing in the wind. One day from the window, i could see a cardinal pulling the string, so i went outside, and of course, she flew into the tree, but she was watching me. I untied the string and tossed it near the tree, and i hoped she could use it. After several months, i was in the yard and came across an old birds nest that had blown out of a tree, and the string was all snuggled into the nest with sticks and stuff, man. i actually almost cried.
I have same male cardinal eating at my feeder for like 4 years now! He always comes back after storms! I live in NW Florida.
My fav birds! Love them so much especially seeing male feed the female! So caring and family tight! Northern cardinals are in my area of Florida and they stay year round! Very territorial and fight off chickadees (which I love too) ☹️
I saw one plop out of my tree this past year with his mate and two kids looking for food. The young were hobbling behind him. So cute.
my wife (who looks exactly like Danny DeVito) and i have always wondered about the secret life of the cardinals that come to our bird feeder. thanks so much for posting this
The joke at the end was wonderful
Wow! This was great information! Enjoyed the view Thank You!
Missouri. 'cardinal' was first bird I learned to recognize ( age 2). I've had 2 pair that stay all winter every year. Last Spring I got a photo of Dad teaching baby how to use a tray feeder! (He had to hop from fence to cord to tray..)
Note to feeders of birds: If you feed birds, you can become their primary food source. Like having a pet, if you'll be away, have someone keep the feeder full. I have a window feeder and of the cardinals I see, I'm almost certain that one male is particularly steady. I love when I start seeing the young ones join the adults at the feeder.
This I actually not true.
Which part?
They did a study that debunked this myth. At most, maybe a third of a bird's diet will come from your feeder. And they can make it up if you stop.
There is nothing simply normal about a cardinal. Glorious birds in every way
Very informative!
* I witnessed a male cardinal come to the aid of a garden wren that was getting roughed up by two sparrows. He dropped out the sky, stared at 'em both and lunged at 'em and took off after them.
*Saw one male chasing another in midair, probably a back-door love affair found out.
*Heard of a cardinal couple losing their nest and eggs in a windstorm but then tending to a robin's nest (w/eggs) when that couple disappeared.
I yelled "AYYYY" when you made the "in a sunflower seed" joke 💯
I was 28 the fist time I saw a Cardinal. I had just moved to NYC and was walking thru the Rambles and one landed about a foot away from me. Everyone though I was weird being so excited. I also saw fireflies for the first time a few weeks later
Where were you from?
@@nbkawtgnobody Northern California
Oregonian here... and as a nature loving child I lamented the fact we did not have Cardinals or Fireflies. Even though I live in Texas now, I still get excited seeing both creatures... still my favorite and an anomaly. There are so many hawks here I wonder how Cardinals survive. Why be red when you got no poison?
Your humour made me laugh so loudly 😅
Your dry humor, and knowledge of Cardinals, was much enjoyed.
I’m a great admirer of Birds. Thank you for this video!
Every winter morning, around 8am, I lay out a mixture of nuts (peanuts, walnuts, almonds and pecans) on the patio table... for the squirrels. The squirrels love them, but so do the Cardinals. The Cardinals are sweet, they don't fight, but they are also very determined to get their share.
The nice old TH-cam. To the point and not repetitious.
If you made more that are like this (the style, tone, humor, etc)- I would watch every single bird video you make!
Thank you, very informative, I enjoy ed it very much.
I'm almost 79 & lived in Mich. & now So.Calif . since 1960. I have never seen a cardinal. They're so beautiful ❤️.
Great video man, plenty of cardinals here on the Ohio river, thanks, love your channel, keep up the good work✌
Love your sense of humor!!
I live on 130 acres and I cannot count the Red Birds that come to the bird feeder, I feed Songbird brand birdseed. So many sit in the tree 🌳 it looks as if it’s red ornaments. Such a blessing ❤
I love Cardinals. I saw the first one this winter in my yard yesterday. I hope l see more.
Every spring I hear the male cardinal's call and laugh because it sounds like "Hey girl, hey girl" Later in the spring it gets more frantic, and I see cardinals fighting and I imagine the SNL Roxbury Guys.
Love the regular posting brother keep it up 👍👍 I especially enjoy the ghost story and food series, but all of your content I enjoy and watch till the end👍👍
I’m in an outermost ring suburb of Chicago. About 10 years ago, a large number of blue jays started taking over the neighborhood and are keeping cardinal numbers lower than before. The red-tail hawk, bald eagle and owl populations have also grown here - probably also keeping cardinal numbers in check. Thanks for your very informative video.
I have an issue with crows robbing nests and stealing the hatchlings of cardinals that nest in trees close to my house. Then they built a nest in my clematis vines and something overnight pulled the vines down (raccoon?) and stole 2 of the babies. One was still on the ground alive. I took him to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary so they could raise him until he could be released. He was still a hatchling.
I have to admit, I enjoyed watching this video on cardinals and the ending was funny!.. 👍
After doing yard work they are quick to come and pick through the lawn and flower beds. The Holly trees in the yard are full of nests. I hear the distinctive peeps early and late in the day.
Loved the little funny tidbits sprinkled throughout! 😂
I've lived in my place for a decade and have the same pair. I noticed the female flying at the window from a few inches and pecking at the reflection of herself. She does it with rear view mirrors on automobiles as well
I absolutely love watching the cardinals. It's precious when they feed each other. I named mine Harry and Meghan.
When I was five years old my mother couldn't give me a baby doll, but noticed I loved "my red birds". So she gave me all the Cardinals in the whole world. I spent my childhood adoring all my red birds. She also gave my mean, bully sister all the blue jays. It fit.
Thank you.
🌳🌲🌳🌳 There are beautiful red cardinals here at home in Southern Ontario, Canada as well. 🇨🇦 🍁
Excellent video.
Beautiful birds!
Fun facts! And fun commentary
The cardinal is our state bird in Kentucky. Love seeing them.
My first Female Cardy was so brave, I would drive in and she would fly right over to me for peanuts. She passed away unfortunately and I have a new Cardy pair. My current Male Cardy comes to me for peanuts but he doesn't get as close as that first female I had. She would even come to me during her breeding season. They are smart birds and have some sort of facial recognition because neither have ever flown to my husband for food. One thing I've noticed about the male- he's obsessed with his female companion and follows her everywhere! Especially during the breeding season but even in the winter I see him following her. This year, my female had 4 broods! They were so busy and the male does a lot of the work feeding the offspring while the female sits on her new brood.
I live in Central Maine and have noticed an increase in the Northern Cardinal population. They were somewhat rare 10 years ago. Now you see them everywhere!
I really learned a lot! Thanks for the info and the good entertainment as well! 😃✨💖✨now I'm a new subscriber!
very nice thanks! your channel is always really interesting
They're always in my backyard. They are just beautiful to see.
The only channel where I can learn about the fall of Rome, and some red birds.
Gorgeous bike, too!
