    Sounds like this will be a legendary layout! The portion of main with different grades and a crossover is quite interesting. Thanks for sharing :) Take care!

    Really neat to watch this again after all the construction that you completed in 2022. Gives great perspective of what you are modeling. kudos DAYRL! Would really be neat to travel to the area and see it for myself. Maybe I can talk my wife into it! I did get her to go to Cheyenne with me to see the big boy 4014 inaugural run in 2019 so there’s a chance😂. She’s a professional photographer, and took a lot of great pictures, even published a story in the St Paul Pioneer press.

    Daryl, Well with all the concept and photos laid out it will soon be time to start the journey. These day's some trains are so long that not all yards can handle them. They split the train at the centre DPU's and occupy 2 sidings. Also dispatch likes to get these " Monster's" through their area as quickly as possible. Well let the fun begin. Cheer's Chris Perry.

    • @EvanstonSub
      @EvanstonSub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'll probably have a few monster trains to keep ops fun as high as possible.

    • @ainsleyperry5192
      @ainsleyperry5192 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daryl, An intermodal "Z" monster has been given the o.k. to run the "table." You can hear the train long before you see it. Horn blasting bell ringing. The train has Lewis Hamilton at the controls. The double stack cans are swaying. Any moment the whole train could be in the ballast. In modal form the train speed would look to toy like. A train of empty auto-rac's and empty shipping containers for L.A. is a common sight on the Evanston Sub at the moment. Cheers, Chris Perry. @@EvanstonSub

    Can't wait to see what you model, there is already a good representation of the Evencston sub in N scale by Roy Smith.
    Seeing it in HO will be a real treat, if it's going to be anything like your N scale layout it will be worth the wait.

    If you do Weaver canyon before Castle rock, it’s going to be hard to adjust to get the reds, pinks, coral and orange colors right. It’s hard enough to tell yourself that the dirt and rocks aren’t brown. Lol. What a great trip and I look forward to seeing this in real life on your layout.

    One of the fascinating features of the Evanston Sub (Salt Lake Sub), is the twin tunnel crossover at MP931.5. It has been featured in many UPRR publications and Public Relations material. It is where the the new main and the old main and parallel tunnels that were at staggered elevations with a curved crossover bridge on #1 track that crossed over #2 track. In 251 territory (directional traffic), the trains operated on tracks designated by direction of travel of the trains. Westbound on North Track - #1 Track, Eastbound on South Track - #2 Track, Northbound on West Track - #1 Track, Southbound on East Track - #2 Track. This is simplified by the phrase to identify track numbers. "North West 1". Essentially, righthand running.
    Except on the Salt Lake Sub. It is signaled for wrong way, South track is westbound #1 track and North track is eastbound #2 track, running between MP931.5 and Strawberry MP977. This is the only place on the transcon that is wrong way.

    • @EvanstonSub

      Yes, they use the original mainline with grades up to 1.7% for westbound downhill trains and the modern mainline with consistent 1% grade for eastbound uphill trains.

    Daryl the location east of Castle Rock is Curvo but getting there is almost impossible. Access is from the control point at Fawcett but unless you have a dirt bike or a dune buggy your not getting out there the whole area has unimproved trails and that tunnel is on private property which UP bulls patrol every day in their broncos there is also a railroad service road from Castle Rock but I would not attempt it without permission.

      I had the best luck with handmade turnouts using Fast Track jigs. All the turnouts on the Geneva Sub were handmade and powered by tortoise switch motors.

    Does the Evanston Sub have Automatic Block Signals and if it does, how will you do it with ho scale?

    • @EvanstonSub
      @EvanstonSub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Evanston Sub is double track CTC: MP 814.7 - 846.5 & MP 977.7 - 992.6 and Double Track ABS MP 846.5 - 977.7. The ABS section has unusual (at least to me) center track sidings instead of crossover control points. The center track sidings do not work well for a layout as each one needs to be as long as the longest train compared to crossover control points that take up only 4-6 ft. So my layout will be completely CTC with crossover control points.

    Can I just say, I am really excited to see someone else modeling another prototypical subdivision in HO scale!!??? I’m hoping to eventually do something like this but I can’t officially make a decision just yet. The two I am looking into currently are the Union Pacific Cima/Caliente Sub, and the Union Pacific Jefferson City Sub. The cima Sub I will say I lived near there for most of my life.
    Some of the BNSF lines are really calling my name in a way, and that’s hard because there’s factors Union Pacific has that BNSF hasn’t when it comes to what I would like to incorporate into my layout. Let me ask you this, did you always know you wanted to model Union Pacific? How long did it take you to decide? Did you live near or did you just have a keen interest?

    • @EvanstonSub
      @EvanstonSub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely recommend doing an area close to where you live, especially for your first time prototype modelling. For the Geneva Sub, I lived a mile from the Rochelle RR Park. It really helped.

    • @GMTX-kg8ep
      @GMTX-kg8ep 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EvanstonSub that totally makes sense! I don’t like near it anymore, but I lived for about fourteen years near the Union Pacific Cima Subdivision and the Caliente Sub. I lived in Vegas during those times until I moved to Kentucky, but I still consider myself a Union Pacific kinda guy, so I am pretty sure now that’s the one I will model. I never have lived near the Jefferson City Sub nor have I railfanned it before. Do you now live near the Evanston Sub or do you just have experience from railfanning?

      @@EvanstonSub I wasn’t going to say anything and just let it go as I’m not prone to getting triggered by comments I see on TH-cam and elsewhere, but on this occasion I feel compelled to chime in. I have to say I’m disappointed by your seemingly dismissive reply to the above comment.
      Why “meh?” Because Roy’s layout isn’t a basement filling empire? Because he uses sectional track? Why would you say something like that when you could have simply said “I’ve seen his layout” and left it at that. By adding that simple three letter word you’ve come across as an elitist snob. I would not have expected such a level of casual disrespect from someone such as yourself.
      Roy makes the effort to share his layout with others in an open and unpretentious way and for that alone he has my respect. He obviously doesn’t have yours. Sad.
      End of rant.

      @@EvanstonSub I can understand that. Just came across the wrong way. People tend to try and be helpful, sometimes it’s best to just try and take comments in the spirit in which they’re intended, even if it prompts a rolling of the eyes.
      If I may ask, what prompted to you to model the Evanston Sub? Not enough space to recreate the Geneva Sub in HO scale? Or was it more of desire to change the locale to one with more scenic possibilities? Just curious. (And I hope I’m not the 21st person to pose that question…)

    • @EvanstonSub
      @EvanstonSub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dexterdog62 You are right about the comments. However, now that I am retired, I find that I speak my mind more than I used to. Could be a good thing or could be a bad thing. Anyway, I have plenty of room to do the Geneva Sub in HO. I changed over to the Evanston Sub because I wanted to do something different. I have modeled Midwest railroading in N scale for over 50 years, 18 of them specifically on the Geneva Sub. So, to keep my interest in the hobby as high as possible, I switched over to HO scale and from Midwest to Mountains. I am also very interested in the Evanston sub because of its historical significance. I'm really pumped to start the layout, more so than I have been for a long time.
