it will break again. Even if you silicon "cool" it and V bevel the entire break, it will break again. Cast is extremely dirty and the mixture isn't consistent, so you have a lot of dirty spots or high iron deposits in it. Sure, you can weld it, but it's eventually going to break right at the toe of your weld.
I bought a vise about that size for my personal use in our shop. I let one guy use it and he managed to break the vise off like that by putting a ten foot cheater on a piece of round bar to bend it. No bend but it did snap the vise off.
Thanks for the great video, I'm going to start nick testing some of my welds - and thanks for including the broken vise clip, it's nice to see that those kinds of things happen to the best of us ...
I'm hoping to start the apprentice program for UA430 here in Tulsa and I've been watching your videos for the last two weeks. Your videos are filled with a lot of great information. I really appreciate this videos. I hope I get into the program and do a great job. Thank you Austin for making these videos
Eric Turner I’m trying not to say a bad word when something like that happens. My wife says I shouldn’t. So- after 34 years lm trying to listen to her. #$&@
My girls tablet started blaring at the end when you were giving advise for the day I told her to turn it down and she said I was impatient I told her God was talking and she interrupted Him🤣
That what happens when your a good welder, U brake your vise, 😆GREAT VIDEO Thanks William Orange county, ca. I think it's time to Make your own vise !!
I'm really wanting to start welding school. The only thing stopping me me from starting is that I'm on suboxone right not, I'm going to be tapering off for the next 2-3 months. But I'm having bad sleep patterns and it's like hell waking up in the morning. I feel I'm not at my best. I'm stuck with the decision of starting next month while I'm still taking suboxone and not at my best but push through it. Or wait till I'm totally off of it which will be some time.
Have you ever thought about getting into tig, and checking out refinery rig welding? I just started welding, I bought a 300 and got set up for tig and stick. I live two blocks from a Sinclair refinery. Your videos have been great! Keep em coming
When your off work for a year you think about doing a lot of differant things. thats good being near refinery but you dont have a job there and might not ever work there. Might be a good place to work though. . Im thinking the refinery has a contractor and that contractor hires rig welders. best bet be a shutdown temporary. it could happen but have a backup plan
Jeff Y I do work out here. Have for ten years. I’m fairly connected. The refinery managers, contractor owners. All go to my church. I’m already set to be broke out soon as I can pass the test.
I am NOT a professional welder, just a DIY’r with a bit of exposure and experience. I was always told if a rod or Mig wire flux core weld uphill to keep flux from over running and interring with the filler material, tie in and porosity. Yet I see you welding downhill on the pipe. I’m sure different rods, material thickness, prep, weld machine amp settings and welder skills running downhill flux electrode can be accomplished. But is it actually something that would be generally accepted if a QA person were witnessing your weld on a critical weld.
That looked an awful lot like a Harbor Freight pipe vise. And if you are telling me you got almost 9 years out of it doing pipeline and rig work you are well ahead. I bought the 6in Harbor Freight vise probably around the same time and am happily surprised it has survived and I haven't abused it anywhere near what yours has probably seen. Also for the HF vises, from what I have seen that mode of failure is the most common. You cant expect much more from a Chinese junk cast vise that only costs $80..
What volumetric NDT I carried out on your test welds ? Surely by carrying out bend coupons only the areas specified for bending are known to be defect free
Most big industry, Oil& Gas Pipe use Auto Welders these days or seamless pipe ! Hand Welding Huge Schedule 40 Pipe would take forever ? Am I wrong ? BTW: You have some awesome welding skills there Bro !1
Man that would be a tough situation. I’d say relax and enjoy the finer things in life, for the time being. Maybe socialize with others on social media for now, start building your network. And contact list. Your network is just as vital as your skill set in this line of work. Great question. I’m glad you asked. I hope this was helpful. Check out my inner circle if you haven’t already. Practicing for my first test. Is it better to grind your root or run a wire brush? I haven't taken my first test yet, but on the root I wire wheel it, run my hot pass at 75-90 in 3rd gear depending on my mood, and I push till I feel it dig, than long arc to let it fill before I do my next step. I notice the guys who grind there roots tend to scrape drag and step/whip it without really digging. When I say dig, I mean I push down like you push down a pencil on paper till I fill the rod penetrate deep enough into the root bead that it almost pierces through the other side. Is this an accurate method? Self teaching here
Either way, I know guys that grind their beads and I know guys that’s don’t grind em. I’d say most generally most guys grind them on a test but I have known a guy or two that didn’t grind it on a test and still made the test. Everyone welds different and learned dif techniques from others or self thought like yourself.
That jaw breaking on the vise was classic but the weld was good. :) Did you say " I think I can weld that back" or go into a rant? Me personally, I would have been ticked. LOL
How long did it take you to get your pipeline Cert? I'm looking to weld as a career when I'm out of highschool. I'm hoping to become a pipeline welder, and I'm trying to get an idea about the certs and how long it takes to get them.
man that bench vice scene was funny

There must be something unusual about me. Everyone else seems to have laughed heartily at your breaking vise. I was probably more upset than you were.

Well dang!! I wasn’t expecting that vice to break! Glad you didn’t break the umbrella holder! Enjoyed the video and be safe.
Haha I know. I didn’t either lol 🤦♂️
I hope all is well and that you’ll get back on the ROW soon brother
I guess the fact that you were able to break your vice before your test strap shows how good of a welder you are.
