I heard and saw this show the night before my father died. Talked to him the last time in my life and his life late that night, after the concert. He wondered why I was awake. Told him about the amazing concert. Next day he died. He was only 58. Still love him.

My father took me to my first Sting's show in 1993 when I was 15. He died in 99. Both he and my mom had lots of fun waiting for me outside the stadium, it was an adventure for them that night. He remembered and always laughed at it.

Haha, love how Copeland brings the tempo right up at the beginning of 'message in a bottle' You can just hear him thinking "Yeah, we're not playing it that slow, we're going fast and you're coming with me whether you like it or not!!"

How lucky people were back in the late 70s, to have two great English trios, the Police and the Jam.

They never let up! The energy was incredible and so was the drumming! And I like that they mixed in reggae and ska beats! Great power trio! 💥🔥🎸😊😎

A brand new decade - This was a high energy gig filmed for German television, just when the power-pop trio was first breaking out to huge international audiences. The first hit singles are here, in fascinating live renditions: 'Don't Stand So Close To Me', 'I Can't Stand Losing You', 'Walking On The Moon', 'Message In A Bottle', 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da', and others. So are live riffs on some deep, well-loved tracks from those benchmarks first three albums, including 'Deathwish', 'Truth Hits Everybody', 'Next To You', and their classic hit 'So Lonely'. The band is super tight and ultra aggressive here - and Sting's characteristic singing, high-pitched and reggae-influenced vocals cut right through like a hot knife in butter. It's 1980 - and The Police are changing rock and roll forever. This is a precedent setting concert. So dig it ya hear!

+ghostriderYKT The reunion concerts were ok. They changed so much thought. Its not the same band that it used to be. The pace is much slower. its almost like they lost some of that rawness with age. Plus the super "crisp", nervous aggressive sound they had in this concert was definitely much better then their reunion shows.

Yep, I agree, this is much more raw talent freed from dancers, choreography, massive light displays and the whole lot than you would see from just about any young rock band now. A lot less "produced" than a Beyonce or Drake show, too.

I was 14 when I saw this concert. There had always been tickets for Pink Floyd, Zappa, Santana, but here everything was sold out. Knowing that pop and rock history was being written here, I was glued in front of the TV, while the master of the house was joking about the missing melodies and the bumbling around. Yes, those weren't the lines of the swing era anymore, catchy tunes, however. Every take.
Rockpalast then became an institution for us, with 15, 20 people in front of the TV. In shared flats, U2, Rory Gallgher, guaranteed without parents.
If I look at Rockpalast today, I don't understand the special thing about it anymore. Today I am like my father back then - almost, but I would never think of agitating against it. Because the Rockpalast shapes.

i`ve seen them 1 or 2 years before this in hamburg with eberhard schoener.
they have been musicians in his ensemble and almost nobody knew them yet.
mr.schoener let them play the `support` for his own show and so they played their just released 1st album as `the police` and lots of the hippies
    in the audience were booo-ing.
haha, a couple weeks or months later they got no.1 in the u.s. and were immediately too big to continue the actually succsessful tour as musicians with
    eberhard schoener.
to me both sets (police and e.schoener with sting, summers + copeland) were awesome.
    an unforgettable evening.
but this gig here is surely one of their greatest.

my friends who are musicians go on about Sting being a terrific bass player...they're right. what a great thing it is when you get a band of great musicians (technically proficient) who also make catchy-listenable pop tunes. Steely Dan comes to mind. On the other end of the spectrum is Zappa...great musicians but really unapproachable songs.

    • @markfisher589
      @markfisher589 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Sting is a very underrated bassist. His voice is so unique and the drums and guitar are so great people forget how good he is at the bass. He one of the greatest rock bassist to ever play. That's why Copeland could play whatever the hell he wanted to; Stings bass playing was so kick ass. Andy Summers would sprinkle his guitar parts over those two and it was magnificent.
