So the Redskins were successful in containing Walter Payton. They held him to only 6 yards rushing on 7 carries. But, as a testiment to how truly good these '85 Bears were, they STILL beat the Redskins by FIVE touchdowns!! (Arguably, the best team ever assembled in the NFL) They were definitely ahead of their time! By the way, ol Walter #34 was still productive, he did have a touchdown PASS!! To none other than Jim McMahon, (the qb for those of you that didnt know)! Walter was an unbelievable all-around football player! In my opinion, the epitome of a "generational player"! I truly feel blessed to be able to say that Ive seen this man play with my own eyes! RIP #34.. I dont think youll be forgotten for many more generations to come (if ever), much like one of your predecessors Gale Sayers.. Another generational player!
Tim Ryan was really good. On Gault’s Kickoff Return, he didn’t say a word for 35 seconds & let the crowd noise take over. True Pro. Guys like Romo & Collinsworth would have said a thousand words.

Tim, buddy it's quarters buddy periods are only in hockey. Ryan and Morris were OK together but they were both pretty funny when they made basic mistakes.

Any game from 1984-86 with the Chicago Bears was brutal. That was their normal defense. Today 11-1-2019 marks 20 years since Walter Payton passed away so I'm watching Bears games to pay tribute.
Amazing how the entire complexion of the stadium changed after Gaults KR TD. This was definitely a statement game for the Bears. I know the Skins got whipped in the SB against the Raiders but you just didn't see the Skins get taken to the woodshed like this very often back then.

I'm a Bears fans since 1985. At the time of this game I was a week from my 12th birthday and I wasn't following the Bears yet. It wasn't until several weeks later when the Bears hosted the Detroit Lions when I got on the Bears wagon. When my mom bought the Chicago Bears Super Bowl championship season highlight VHS in February 1986 I was able to watch the recaps of the games I missed early to midway of the 1985 season, including this game. As many of you know, the next two times the Redskins came to Soldier Field they knocked the Bears out of the playoffs in January 1987 and January 1988. As a matter of fact, after this 45-10 Bears victory this game, the Bears would lose 15 of the next 19 matchups against Washington from 1987 to 2016. The Bears finally ended a 7 game losing streak to the Redskins by beating them 31-15 in Landover, Maryland last week of this 2019 season. The Redskins lead the all time series against the Bears 26-24-1.
Including the next 2 divisional playoff games in 86 and 87. This redskins team was in a transition. Theismann and riggins were done. Once gibbs and the offensive coaching staff figured out the 46 it was over. No one was beating Chicago that season, except for a quick release quarterback like Dan Marino. Jay Schroeder had a strong arm and quick release so, you can see the difference in the next season.
If you just looked at the box score, you'd think the Redskins won this game. They outgained Chicago 376-250 and outrushed them 192-91, the most rushing yards the '85 Bears gave up in a game. Turnovers and special teams touchdowns are what hurt the Redskins in this game.
Yeah, I have to admit, my memory of the Bears domination is a bit off. This game, and particularly the second Packers game, the Lions game in Detroit, about the first 20 minutes in Dallas, and especially the playoff vs. the Rams, the opposition defense outplayed the Bears. What made the biggest impression on me was the points. It was an event when you scored a touchdown on Chicago. I didn't get that impression again until I saw the 2000 Ravens. They were different in their approach, though. Whereas you could go downfield on the Bears but couldn't get in the end zone, you couldn't even get FIRST DOWNS on the Ravens. But I think it was Jim McMahon that said it best when he said that in practice against this defense, he felt like a pedestrian standing in the middle of the Dan Ryan expressway, IN RUSH HOUR!
This is the only team that instead of being excited when the offense comes out, I get excited when the defense comes out, knowing how dominate they were was must see tv
when I saw this game my eyebrows raised to what was going on in Chicago that year.......and paid close attention..... that just did not happen to a Joe Gibbs team ever......... and Skins had talent.
I have been watching a lot of these old Bears games and they had a lot of financial disputes with all of their players and that's what came back to bite them in the future.

40:10 Theismann, the Washington QB gets called on to punt for Washington from their 10 yard line. He had just been sacked hard. The punt goes off the side of his foot and goes 1 yard, out to the 11 yard line! Ouch, that’s not good? The very first play by the Bears is a laser strike from McMahon to McKinnon for TD!!
Around 57:00 the announcers are comparing Theismann to McMahon. Joe has played in 136 games without injury up to this point. It's sad to think what's awaiting him at the hands of Lawrence Taylor just 7 weeks up the road.

At the time I was surprised Theismann was still playing as he was in his 15th season (2 Canadian, 13 in NFL) I figured he would have retired long before this.

This was the game where Dexter Manley said that he was going to put Walter Payton out of pro football for good. That seemed to be the thing that really fired the Bears up.

Walter Payton throws 1 pass to Jim McMahon for a TD and has a QBR of 158.8!! In the 2nd Quarter there are 4 TDs: 99 yard Willie Gault TD kickoff return, 2 TDs thrown by McMahon and 1 TD throw by Peyton!! WOW!!

I wasn't a Madden fan until he went on MNF and later SNF. He talked way too much for my taste while while Pat "why say a sentence when 3 words will do" Summerall was doing pbp. JMO.

I've been a Chicago 🐻 Bears fan since 1961. When the NFL, ('Not Football League') changed the rules and made it a completely different, more ladylike game and became politically 'Woke'. Anyway, from the '60s through to the late-'70's were some tough and downright grim years to be a Bears fan. 😒 But, a fan cheers and supports his team, win or lose! When 'Papa Bear' George Hallas (Career: 324-151-31 - .671) hired coach Ditka, we were cautiously optimistic. To be fair, many of the outstanding players were acquired well before 'Da Coach' even started his coaching career with Chicago; but, he received the credit anyway. Of course, he was a pretty good coach, although we could all have done without his counterproductive and damned childish hissy fits when things didn't go his way. McMahon was the only QB who could handle Ditka's tirades and rants, shrugging them off with ease. Seeing as Coach Ditka never won another Super Bowl without Defensive coach J.D. 'Buddy' Ryan, it isn't really fair to give him as much credit as he receives. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but just look at his record as head coach with the Saints: 15 & 33 - with a win percentage of .313! In Chicago, team members like QB McMahon, his outstanding receivers, Cornerbacks, etc., and Coach Ryan's awesome defensive strategy were responsible for their wins and efficient deployment of the '46', not Coach Ditka's coaching efforts. Jim McMahon (BTW, 'McMahon' translates to "Son of the Bear") once said that after throwing yet another touchdown pass in the Minnesota game in which he relived the longsuffering QB Fuller, he looked over to see Coaches Ditka and Ryan screaming at each other and thought to himself: "Those are our coaches and we are still winning!" lol - *RIP NFL, your rules changes wounded you and your P.C. Jeff, I see where you’re coming from about Ditka. There were other factors involved within the team. Jim McMahon was never around when we needed him the most (1984 NFC championship, 1985 Miami dolphins game, and 1989 SF game). I always questioned His dedication. He didn’t take care of his body by working out. He got soft and he got hit constantly and was always injured. Even some of the players like Dan Hampton called him out to the media for his lack of dedication. We could’ve won two more Super Bowls if we had that extra push from Jim. Mike McCaskey had a hand in screwing up everything with Ditka (Vanisi) and the personnel as well... They should’ve never let Wilbur Marshall go. He was a beast. Somebody should’ve mediated between Ditka and Ryan, and make them find common ground. Also, when Leslie Fraser was injured in the Super Bowl and never came back that was big blow to that defense. When Vince Tobin became defensive coordinator he made them into a bend but don’t break defense. They didn’t look as dominant as they did in 84 and 85, even though they were good statistically. The Bears were the youngest team in the NFL when they won the Super Bowl. They could’ve done so much more collectively betweeen 84 and 88.

I love how there is a sense of urgency on every play. People say players are faster now. The game if you compare here to now is much faster. Players are passive now. They are all in the shotgun and spread out and on an island. You see pulling guards and designed plays here and they aren't in the shotgun every play. It's not just football either. It's every sport now where it's much more spread out and passive and players just play their assignments and that's it. There is no team play now and they have completely removed any physicality. Every play here is full of all sorts of things going on, huge pileups and everything. Even if you look at 40 times. They have always been olympic level athletes. Even if some guys can run the 40 a split second faster now, it doesn't come into play. If you look at the record books too. They might be a split second fastet a few but not the top dogs. And they aren't as good in other events. Why you see so many first round busts now. T hey get paid huge amounts of money and it doesn't matter.
Opening kickoff was reminiscent of Tom Landry using Thomas Hollywood Henderson on reverse kickoffs, except Wilbur Marshall couldn’t run like Hollywood.
This game highlights why Walter Payton was the greatest football player ever. Football player, not necessarily the greatest rusher. He could do it all. Run, pass, fantastic blocker, great receiver. Plus he could kick, but almost never got to showcase it.

After this game, the Redskins owned the Bears. Winning playoff divisional games in 86,87 and regular season games in 90 and 91. The Bears only wononce after 85 and that would be in 1989.
Many people forget that Willie Gault had a big, big game in that Super Bowl win over the Patriots... Off the top of my head Willie had 130 yards receiving on like 4 or maybe 5 receptions. And 2 big long plays that helped the Bears go down and score. The Bears front office was stupid for letting Willie Gault go the Raiders. Willie opened the field up for all the other Bear receivers... Which they desperately needed... The 88-89 NFC championship game demonstrated why the Bears missed Willie Gault so much. The field being so compressed and no legitimate deep threat allowed the 49ers to really clamp down on those Bears wide receivers.
The Bears the year before could have been considered "dynasty killers" themselves.... In a unexpected upset 23-19 win on the road against the Redskins in the 84-85 season playoffs. Those Redskins had been to 2 straight Super Bowls and many, many people thought the Redskins were going to win that divisional playoff game to set up a rematch of the previous year's NFC championship game between the Redskins and 49ers. Which if Washington had done that it would have been 3 straight NFC championship game appearances.
In reality the play that ended his career was one of perfect yet a very terrible circumstance... His leg caught in a extremely vulnerable and locked position and being hit in such a way that something had to give. Key part of that circumstance was having his lower leg locked and set in such a way that there was zero give to release pressure or tension. Which led to the fracture of his leg bone. That did not mean he was not able to dodge or miss big hits. It was just a perfect freak circumstance that led to that leg fracture. That was the huge, huge problem with old school AstroTurf.... It would give extremely high amount of grip to the players shoes that it created situations where feet would be locked into place. Which led to joints or ligaments either being broken or tearing because there was no where for tension or pressure to relieve itself other than in the joint. Granted the play with LT and Joe happened at JFK where it was natural grass... Which adds to the fact that the play was really a highly unusual combination of things happening all at one time to cause what happened there The college basketball player who fractured his lower leg while just landing is another example of perfect setup yet horrible result situation.
Shortest punt in NFL history at 40 m mark. Same season Sean Landetta muffed a punt in the playoffs against the Bears, so that negative 7 yards might actually be the record. Interesting how the Bears could intimidate teams into making big mistakes. Theisman came in for the injured punter of course, but the backup QB had some high school history of punting and might have gotten off a 20 yarder. 😂

This may have been the last time the Bears beat the Redskins. The Redskins were also the reason Chicago never became a dynasty, demoralizing the Bears in the playoffs in 86 and 87 at Chicago. That's how Gibbs reacted to this loss...by getting his team better.
Yes, the Bears had a great game. They dominated the Redskins in all 3 phases. But the Bears run defense was not very good in this game. They got gashed for a lot of yards. But it doesn't make their Super Bowl rings any less beautiful, I guess.
Johnny Morris was totally wrong. The only great thing in this game was the Bears. They thumped the aging Redskins. This was Theismans worst nightmare of a game until a few weeks later when L.T. broke Theismans leg and ended his career. This was the end of 1 Redskin era and the season of a lifetime for Chicago.

Chicago had their greatest 2nd quarter ever in a regular season game. Washington had their greatest 2nd quarter ever in a Super Bowl.

I was working on a construction site in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 1985 when Joe Theismann was out in his Mercedes Benz with his wife or girlfriend and asked me for directions. I had a Chicago Bears tee shirt on and he said to me your team looks great this year . I thanked him and told him how to get to Montgomery Village .
At the time I was surprised Theismann was still playing as he was in his 15th season (2 Canadian, 13 in NFL) I figured he would have retired long before this.

I've been a Chicago 🐻 Bears fan since 1961. When the NFL, ('Not Football League') changed the rules and made it a completely different, more ladylike game and became politically 'Woke'. Anyway, from the '60s through to the late-'70's were some tough and downright grim years to be a Bears fan. 😒 But, a fan cheers and supports his team, win or lose! When 'Papa Bear' George Hallas (Career: 324-151-31 - .671) hired coach Ditka, we were cautiously optimistic. To be fair, many of the outstanding players were acquired well before 'Da Coach' even started his coaching career with Chicago; but, he received the credit anyway. Of course, he was a pretty good coach, although we could all have done without his counterproductive and damned childish hissy fits when things didn't go his way. McMahon was the only QB who could handle Ditka's tirades and rants, shrugging them off with ease. Seeing as Coach Ditka never won another Super Bowl without Defensive coach J.D. 'Buddy' Ryan, it isn't really fair to give him as much credit as he receives. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but just look at his record as head coach with the Saints: 15 & 33 - with a win percentage of .313! In Chicago, team members like QB McMahon, his outstanding receivers, Cornerbacks, etc., and Coach Ryan's awesome defensive strategy were responsible for their wins and efficient deployment of the '46', not Coach Ditka's coaching efforts. Jim McMahon (BTW, 'McMahon' translates to "Son of the Bear") once said that after throwing yet another touchdown pass in the Minnesota game in which he relived the longsuffering QB Fuller, he looked over to see Coaches Ditka and Ryan screaming at each other and thought to himself: "Those are our coaches and we are still winning!" lol - *RIP NFL, your rules changes wounded you and your P.C. 'Woke' Bull Shit killed you.*
Jeff, I see where you’re coming from about Ditka. There were other factors involved within the team. Jim McMahon was never around when we needed him the most (1984 NFC championship, 1985 Miami dolphins game, and 1989 SF game). I always questioned His dedication. He didn’t take care of his body by working out. He got soft and he got hit constantly and was always injured. Even some of the players like Dan Hampton called him out to the media for his lack of dedication. We could’ve won two more Super Bowls if we had that extra push from Jim. Mike McCaskey had a hand in screwing up everything with Ditka (Vanisi) and the personnel as well... They should’ve never let Wilbur Marshall go. He was a beast. Somebody should’ve mediated between Ditka and Ryan, and make them find common ground. Also, when Leslie Fraser was injured in the Super Bowl and never came back that was big blow to that defense. When Vince Tobin became defensive coordinator he made them into a bend but don’t break defense. They didn’t look as dominant as they did in 84 and 85, even though they were good statistically. The Bears were the youngest team in the NFL when they won the Super Bowl. They could’ve done so much more collectively betweeen 84 and 88.

I love how there is a sense of urgency on every play. People say players are faster now. The game if you compare here to now is much faster. Players are passive now. They are all in the shotgun and spread out and on an island. You see pulling guards and designed plays here and they aren't in the shotgun every play. It's not just football either. It's every sport now where it's much more spread out and passive and players just play their assignments and that's it. There is no team play now and they have completely removed any physicality. Every play here is full of all sorts of things going on, huge pileups and everything. Even if you look at 40 times. They have always been olympic level athletes. Even if some guys can run the 40 a split second faster now, it doesn't come into play. If you look at the record books too. They might be a split second fastet a few but not the top dogs. And they aren't as good in other events. Why you see so many first round busts now. T hey get paid huge amounts of money and it doesn't matter.

This game highlights why Walter Payton was the greatest football player ever. Football player, not necessarily the greatest rusher. He could do it all. Run, pass, fantastic blocker, great receiver. Plus he could kick, but almost never got to showcase it.

Many people forget that Willie Gault had a big, big game in that Super Bowl win over the Patriots... Off the top of my head Willie had 130 yards receiving on like 4 or maybe 5 receptions. And 2 big long plays that helped the Bears go down and score.
The Bears front office was stupid for letting Willie Gault go the Raiders. Willie opened the field up for all the other Bear receivers... Which they desperately needed... The 88-89 NFC championship game demonstrated why the Bears missed Willie Gault so much. The field being so compressed and no legitimate deep threat allowed the 49ers to really clamp down on those Bears wide receivers.

The Bears the year before could have been considered "dynasty killers" themselves.... In a unexpected upset 23-19 win on the road against the Redskins in the 84-85 season playoffs. Those Redskins had been to 2 straight Super Bowls and many, many people thought the Redskins were going to win that divisional playoff game to set up a rematch of the previous year's NFC championship game between the Redskins and 49ers. Which if Washington had done that it would have been 3 straight NFC championship game appearances.

In reality the play that ended his career was one of perfect yet a very terrible circumstance... His leg caught in a extremely vulnerable and locked position and being hit in such a way that something had to give. Key part of that circumstance was having his lower leg locked and set in such a way that there was zero give to release pressure or tension. Which led to the fracture of his leg bone. That did not mean he was not able to dodge or miss big hits. It was just a perfect freak circumstance that led to that leg fracture.
That was the huge, huge problem with old school AstroTurf.... It would give extremely high amount of grip to the players shoes that it created situations where feet would be locked into place. Which led to joints or ligaments either being broken or tearing because there was no where for tension or pressure to relieve itself other than in the joint.
Granted the play with LT and Joe happened at JFK where it was natural grass... Which adds to the fact that the play was really a highly unusual combination of things happening all at one time to cause what happened there
The college basketball player who fractured his lower leg while just landing is another example of perfect setup yet horrible result situation.

Yes, the Bears had a great game. They dominated the Redskins in all 3 phases. But the Bears run defense was not very good in this game. They got gashed for a lot of yards. But it doesn't make their Super Bowl rings any less beautiful, I guess.

Johnny Morris was totally wrong. The only great thing in this game was the Bears. They thumped the aging Redskins. This was Theismans worst nightmare of a game until a few weeks later when L.T. broke Theismans leg and ended his career. This was the end of 1 Redskin era and the season of a lifetime for Chicago.
The Redskins beat the Bears the very next season in the playoffs, then won the Super Bowl 2 years later.. End of an era 😂😂😂😭😭
